My Mate Publicly Rejected Me for the Alpha's Daughter

The searing hiss of a branding iron marks the precise instant my entire world shattered. When a gold-embossed invitation slipped from William’s pocket, the brutal truth lay bare: a Mate Ceremony was planned between my own mate and the Alpha’s daughter, Isabelle. As the Council seal caught the light, my fragile wolf fell completely silent. I refused to shed a single tear, even as the ultimate, public rejection loomed before the entire pack.

Chapter 2

The bus smelled like wet wool and old coffee, and I rode it north with my mother's needle pressed against my sternum like a second heartbeat. Nobody looked at me twice. Good. I wasn't in the mood to be seen.

Ashwood came up out of the dark the way it always had—slow, then all at once, pines closing over the road like a hand folding shut. The bus driver didn't even fully stop, just slowed enough for me to jump down into a snowbank at the old fire road. I stood there a long moment after the taillights vanished, breathing air that didn't have wolfsbane or orchids or anyone else's perfume in it.

My parents' cabins were still standing, barely. Roofs sunken, windows blind with frost. The land had sold two years ago on paper, but no one had touched it—too far from the highway, too poor in resources to be worth clearing. Silverfang money didn't care about dirt that didn't make dirt richer. For once, their greed had done me a favor.

I didn't go inside. I went straight to the den-stone behind the second cabin, half-buried under two years of leaf rot and snow, and I dropped to my knees in the frozen dark and started digging with my bare hands.

The ground fought me. It always had. My father used to say Ashwood soil only opened for blood, and I'd laughed at him for it as a girl. I wasn't laughing now. My nails split against rock, and I kept going, scraping frozen earth back handful by handful until my knuckles split too and the blood ran warm over ice-cold fingers, and still I dug, because there was nothing left in me that knew how to stop once it started.

My fingers hit glass an hour before dawn.

I pulled it free—a small vial, no longer than my thumb, crystallized amber gone the color of dried blood, warm despite the frost packed around it. My mother had shown it to me once, when I was small enough to still ask questions instead of swallow them. *This carried every Ashwood woman before you,* she'd said. *It only wakes for the ones who are ready to carry it forward.*

The moment my fingers closed around it, something in my chest that had been silent since the Banquet stirred. Not my wolf—she was still gone, still cold ash where a voice used to live. This was older than her. Deeper. My scent changed under my own skin, blooming into something I didn't recognize, something that didn't smell like the girl who'd ironed William's collars for two years. It smelled like snow and iron and a name I'd never been allowed to use.

I didn't know yet that miles east, on a Council tracking route that had gone cold eighteen months prior, three wolves stopped mid-stride and turned north.

I felt them before I saw them—an hour later, on the ridge above the den-stone, three presences moving through the tree line with an authority that made the fine hair on my arms rise. Not Silverfang. Nothing like Silverfang. Their auras carried weight the way old money carries silence.

I didn't run. Running was for people who still had somewhere safer to go. I pulled my mother's skinning blade from my coat and held the scent-token in my other fist, and I braced my feet in the snow and waited.

A man stepped from the shadows first, in human form, dark coat, no urgency in his stride at all. Two others flanked him a pace back—a broad-shouldered man with a Gamma's watchful stillness, and a woman with a tracker's restless eyes. The man in front stopped ten feet from me. His gaze went straight to the vial in my hand and stayed there.

"You are Ashwood," he said. Not a question.

I didn't lower the blade. I looked at the signet ring on his right hand—old gold, a crest I recognized from Ashwood ledgers I'd read as a child by candlelight, the moon-and-oak seal of a house I'd been told was mostly legend now.

"And you are Moonveil," I said. "State your terms."

Something moved behind his eyes—the barest flicker, gone almost before I caught it. I had a feeling that was the closest thing to surprise this man allowed himself in public.

"Damon Vale," he said. "And you have a great deal more spine than the reports suggested, Miss Barnes."

"They should update their reports."

He almost smiled. Almost.

"Then let's talk," he said, "about what that vial in your hand is worth to both our houses—and what William Kingsley owes for taking two years he had no right to."
