My Mate Chose His Ex Over His Luna Chapter 1

The bond didn't break that night. It cracked.

I felt it at 9:47 PM, standing in the pack kitchen with my hands wrapped around a serving platter still warm from the oven. The mind-link came through sharp and urgent—border patrol, eastern perimeter—and the sensation hit me like a fist to the sternum: Jonas's attention snapping away from me so fast it left a cold hollow where his presence used to hum.

*Disoriented she-wolf at the boundary. No pack scent. Claims she can't remember her name.*

I set the platter down carefully. Thirty place settings stretched across the long table behind me. Two days of work. Candles I'd lit myself an hour ago. The alliance summit started tomorrow, and I'd wanted—needed—this feast to be perfect. Proof that a wolfless Luna could still hold a pack together through sheer competence, even if I couldn't shift, couldn't fight, couldn't do half the things a real Luna was supposed to do.

The front door slammed open. I heard Jonas's voice first, low and urgent, then the sound of boots on hardwood and something else—a soft, trembling gasp that made every wolf in the foyer go quiet.

I walked to the doorway and looked.

Bianca Snyder stood in the center of my entryway, wrapped in a patrol jacket three sizes too big, her hair tangled and her eyes wide and wet. She looked exactly the way she had eight years ago, the night she'd walked out of Ironveil with the pack's entire treasury and left Jonas's mother in a coma.

Jonas was holding her by the shoulders. Steadying her. His face had gone soft in a way I hadn't seen in years.

"Bianca," he said, and his voice cracked on her name.

She blinked up at him, slow and confused, like a child waking from a nightmare. "I—I don't... where am I?"

"You're home," Jonas said. "You're safe now."

I stood there with my hands still smelling of rosemary and roasted meat, and watched my mate cradle the woman who had destroyed him.

Elena, the pack healer, stepped forward and reached for Bianca's wrist to check her pulse. Bianca flinched, and Jonas's arm came up instinctively, shielding her. "Careful," he said. "She's been through enough."

Elena's eyes flicked to me for half a second. I couldn't read the expression. She stepped back.

Jonas finally looked at me. His gaze was distant, distracted, already somewhere else. "Seraphina. Clear out the Luna suite. Bianca needs to rest."

I opened my mouth. Closed it. Tried again. "Jonas, the summit delegates arrive in the morning. I still need to—"

"Now, Seraphina." His voice dropped into that Alpha tone—not the full weight of it, just enough to make my muscles lock for a heartbeat. "She's been through enough. Don't make this about you."

The words landed like a slap. The wolves in the foyer looked away. I forced my body to move, one step back, then another, my hands curling into fists at my sides. The hollow in my chest where Jonas's attention used to be felt suddenly, unbearably cold.

I turned and walked back to the kitchen without another word.

Dinner was worse.

The pack gathered around the table I'd set, and Bianca sat in the chair beside Jonas—my chair—with her hands folded in her lap and her head bowed like a penitent. Chase, Jonas's son, the boy I'd raised, the boy whose leg I'd helped heal after the rogues shattered it, sat on her other side.

He reached over and took her hand.

"My real mother is home," he said, loud enough for the whole table to hear.

Jonas smiled. A few of the younger wolves murmured approval. Bianca looked up at Chase with tears in her eyes and whispered something I couldn't hear.

Chase didn't look at me once.

I sat at the far end of the table, surrounded by the food I'd spent two days preparing, and ate in silence. The roasted vegetables had gone cold. No one asked me to pass the bread. Bianca laughed softly at something Jonas said, a delicate, breathless sound, and the pack leaned in toward her like she was the sun.

I finished my plate. Set my fork down. Stood.

No one noticed me leave.

In the guest room—the one I'd been moved to, the one that smelled like dust and old linens instead of the mate bond I'd spent eight years weaving into every corner of the Luna suite—I pulled out the small leather ledger I kept hidden in the bottom of my travel bag. An old habit from the early years, when I'd documented every debt, every sacrifice, every piece of myself I'd given to this pack because no one else was keeping track.

I opened it to a blank page and wrote a single line:

*He didn't even tell me he was leaving.*

My hand was steady. But something inside my chest—something deep, something I'd never felt move before—stirred. Just once. A flicker of heat in a place that had been cold and silent my entire life.

I pressed my palm flat against my sternum and held very still, waiting.

Nothing.

I closed the ledger and lay down on the narrow bed, staring at the ceiling. Downstairs, I could hear the pack still gathered around the table, their voices low and warm. Bianca's laugh drifted up through the floorboards.

I didn't sleep.

Before dawn, I dressed in the dark and slipped out of the pack house. The eastern perimeter was a two-mile walk through dense forest, and I made it in silence, my breath misting in the cold pre-dawn air. The ward-scent I'd maintained for eight years was woven into the soil here, into the trees, into the boundary stones Jonas's grandfather had set a generation ago.

I knelt and pressed my palm to the earth. I could feel it—my own pheromones, my own work, humming just below the surface like a second heartbeat. The barrier that had kept rogues out, that had let Ironveil rebuild, that had cost me a pregnancy I'd never been allowed to grieve.

It was mine. No vote could take it. No Alpha tone could transfer it.

I stood and walked the full perimeter as the sky lightened, checking every marker, every thread of scent I'd laid down. When I returned to the pack house, the sun was just breaking over the ridge.

Jonas and Bianca were still asleep.

I went to the kitchen and started breakfast for the Council delegates arriving that afternoon.

No one asked where I'd been.
