Chapter 2

I slept two hours and woke before the light.

The brand had not scabbed. It wept a thin, clear fluid through the gauze the healer had wrapped it in and it smelled — under the antiseptic — of cold metal and burned skin. I pulled a long sleeve down over it, drank the water on the nightstand, and walked to the map room with the folder I had spent the rest of the night assembling in my head.

Elias was already there. He was younger than I expected in daylight — mid-thirties, sharp-eyed, the kind of Beta who took notes even when nobody asked him to.

"Sector twelve," I said, and set my finger on the map. "North ridge, above the creek fork. Silverpine has been running two-wolf patrols through there every eleven days for the last seven months. Not nine. Eleven. Kaden thinks the odd interval hides the pattern."

Elias's pen stopped moving.

"Sector six. The ravine." I moved my finger. "Your rotation gap between the second and third watches is forty minutes. Silverpine knows. They cross at minute fourteen, spend twenty on the ridgeline, and are out again by minute thirty-six."

"Sector nineteen —"

"Which ward."

I looked up. He had gone very still.

"He calls it the Elm Ward," I said. "There's a scent-cache buried at the base of the third elm from the split trunk. His scouts refresh it every new moon. He believes no one on your side has ever found it."

Elias set his pen down.

For a long moment he did not say anything. He looked at me the way people do when they are silently revising an earlier assessment. Then he folded the map, tucked it under his arm, and said, "Excuse me."

He was gone before I had finished my second cup of water.

By midday, warriors were moving. I heard the shift in the corridors — boots, low voices, the specific tempo of a pack redeploying. Nobody spoke to me about it. Nobody had to. I sat in the map room and worked through Silverpine's supply routes and let the noise of a functioning pack settle around me like weather.

I did not see Damon that day.

I saw him that evening.

I was alone at the long table, marking probable resupply points in red, when I felt the room adjust. Not aura. Something quieter than aura. The kind of gravitational shift a wolf like him made just by standing in a doorway.

I did not look up.

He stayed there long enough that the lamplight moved a full inch across my page. I kept my sleeve pulled down over my wrist without thinking, and then, deliberately, I pushed it back up and continued working.

His exhale was very soft.

I heard him walk on.

---

By the end of the week I had quarters, a title I had negotiated word by word — *Tactical Consultant, Border Affairs* — and a ranked seat at three separate briefings a day. Not Omega. Not guest. Not rescued. I made them write it into the ledger in my hearing.

I watched him.

I could not help watching him. It was old habit, hypervigilance repurposed. He never used Alpha tone in a room I was in — not once, not on his own warriors, though I heard him use it down the hall on someone I never saw. When I entered a briefing, he shifted his stance by perhaps half a step, and the half-step opened space at the table where I could stand without anyone's shoulder in front of mine. He never announced me. He never touched the small of my back to guide me forward the way Kaden used to when he wanted the room to see that I belonged to him. Damon simply made room, and let me walk into it.

I told myself he was a Lycan Prince who valued the intelligence I provided.

I told myself that for six days.

On the seventh, at a border briefing, a junior warrior — young, blond, not cruel, only stupid — glanced at my sleeve when I spoke and said, "With respect, ma'am, a wolf with a disgrace mark advising on pack security is —"

He did not finish. Not because Damon stopped him. Damon had not moved.

I stopped him.

"With respect," I said, and I lowered my voice the way I did when I was most dangerous, "the mark on my wrist was placed there by an Alpha whose own aura is currently decaying because he wrongfully severed a fated bond. If your standard for tactical credibility is proximity to his judgment, I would encourage you to think that through slowly, in front of your Prince, and tell us where it lands."

The warrior's mouth opened. Closed.

The room did not breathe.

Damon said nothing. He let the silence hold. He let it be mine.

When the briefing ended, Elias caught me in the corridor.

"You should know," he said, low, "nobody speaks to a standing member of this pack that way in front of the Prince without a formal reprimand. Nobody. In years."

I kept walking.

"He didn't reprimand him," I said.

"No." Elias's voice was careful. "He didn't speak over you either. That was — deliberate."

I did not answer.

The corridor smelled of wildfire and cedar, faint, threaded through the stone, and my chest did the thing it should not have been able to do — pulled, once, toward a wolf I could not hear. I catalogued the pull. I filed it. I did not, this time, immediately throw the file away.

Behind me, somewhere in the walls of Silverpine, I knew — with the certainty of a woman who had spent three years learning a man's scent — that Kaden was standing in an empty corridor right now, turning his head toward nothing, and finding no one there.

Good.
