Chapter 3

I heard about the coin before I saw it.

Elias mentioned it in passing during a border briefing—offhand, the way you mention weather. One of his scouts had crossed paths with a Silverpine patrol near the neutral zone. The she-wolf leading it wore something on a chain. Silver. Coin-sized. The scout couldn't get close enough to confirm, but the scent signature matched the report from the ceremony hall.

I set my pen down very carefully.

"Describe it," I said.

Elias glanced up. "Small. Round. Worn on a long chain, visible outside her collar. She touched it twice while she was talking—deliberate. Like she wanted it seen."

"Who was the she-wolf."

"Maci Green." He paused. "The new Luna."

I did not move. I breathed in through my nose, out through my mouth, and I logged the information in the same mental file where I kept Kaden's scent-shifts and Maci's heel-click beside my hand on the stone floor.

"Thank you," I said. "That's useful."

Elias looked at me for a beat longer than necessary, then nodded and left.

I sat alone in the map room and I let myself imagine it. Maci, in her Luna regalia, wearing a replica of the mark that had been burned into my wrist. A trophy. A reminder to her clique—and to herself—of what happens to wolves who stand in her way.

I did not feel rage. Rage is hot and impulsive and I had already spent three years learning what happens when you let your emotions show before you've built the trap.

I felt cold. Precise. The way I always felt when I was most dangerous.

I pulled a blank sheet of parchment toward me and I began drafting the banquet invitation.

---

The neutral-ground Pack Banquet is an old tradition—older than most of the current Alphas, older than the territorial treaties that govern border disputes. It exists in the inter-pack legal framework as a mechanism for diplomatic engagement, and more importantly, it exists as a ritual neither Alpha can decline without signaling weakness to every other pack in the network.

I cited Article VII, Subsection 3(a). I referenced the historical precedent from the territorial accord of 1847. I wrote the invitation in language so procedurally airtight that Kaden would have to ask his own council for permission to refuse, and his council would tell him no.

When I finished, I read it twice, checked the clause citations a third time, and took it to Damon.

He was in his study. Alone. The late afternoon light came through the narrow window and turned the dust in the air to gold. He looked up when I entered, and something in his posture shifted—not tension, exactly. Attention.

I set the document on his desk without preamble.

"I'm proposing a neutral-ground banquet," I said. "Ironcrest as host. Silverpine as invited party. The protocol is ironclad—Kaden can't refuse without losing face across the territory network."

Damon picked up the parchment. His eyes moved across the text. I watched him read—steady, methodical, no reaction visible except the small tightening at the corner of his mouth that I had learned meant he was thinking three moves ahead.

He set it down.

"This will provoke him," he said quietly.

"Yes."

"He'll bring Maci. And her clique."

"I'm counting on it."

Damon looked at me. His eyes had gone very dark, the way they did when his wolf was close to the surface. For a long moment he did not speak. Then he said, "You don't have to explain your reasoning to me. If you want this, we'll do it."

I stopped.

I had prepared a full tactical justification. Border intelligence value. Diplomatic positioning. The strategic advantage of forcing Kaden into a public setting where Lycan authority would outweigh Alpha posturing. I had the entire argument ready.

He wasn't asking for it.

He was simply—agreeing.

I opened my mouth. Closed it. For the first time in days, I had no words immediately available.

"Thank you," I said finally. My voice came out quieter than I intended.

Damon inclined his head once. "Elias will handle the logistics. You'll have full authority over the seating arrangement and the menu. Whatever you need."

I nodded and turned to leave.

Behind me, I heard him exhale—slow, controlled, like a man releasing pressure he had been holding in his chest for longer than was safe.

I did not look back. But I catalogued the sound.

---

The invitations went out the next morning by formal courier. Ironcrest's seal. Damon's signature. Mine beneath it, smaller, in the corner reserved for the hosting party's tactical consul.

I imagined Kaden receiving it. Opening the envelope in front of his council. Reading the protocol citation and realizing, with the slow creeping certainty of a man who has just stepped into a snare he cannot see, that he has no procedural way out.

I imagined Maci reading over his shoulder.

I smiled.

---

Two days later, Elias brought me the reply. Silverpine accepted. Kaden's signature, stiff and too-formal. A note in the margin—handwritten, Maci's script—requesting accommodations for a party of eight.

She was bringing her entire clique.

Good.

I wanted an audience.

I sat down with the seating chart and I began placing names with the care of someone arranging pieces on a board. Maci and her she-wolves at the center table, visible to every wolf in the hall. Kaden beside her, positioned so that his line of sight would cross mine at least four times during the meal. Damon at the head, elevated, his Lycan aura a constant atmospheric pressure that would make every Silverpine wolf in the room aware—biologically, inescapably—of exactly how far they were outranked.

I did not put myself at Damon's side. I put myself three seats down, at the tactician's position, where I could watch without being watched.

When I handed the chart to Elias, he studied it for a long moment.

"She's going to make a scene," he said.

"I know."

"You're ready for that."

It wasn't a question. I met his eyes.

"I'm counting on it," I said.

Elias folded the chart and left without another word.

I sat alone in the map room and I touched the sleeve over my branded wrist. The skin beneath it was still raw. Still cold. The wolf that should have answered from that place was still silent.

But something else—something deeper, older, locked beneath the silver's suppressive weight—pressed once against the inside of my chest.

Patient.

Waiting.

I pulled my sleeve down and I went back to work.
