Chapter 1

The mark on my neck went cold at 8:47 p.m., mid-sentence, while Kaden was still speaking.

I heard the words before my body understood them. *I, Kaden Elliott, Alpha of Silverpine Pack, reject you, Kylie Robinson, as my mate and Luna.*

The bond snapped like a door slamming in an empty house. First cold. Then hollow. Then nothing at all, where three years of scent-memory had lived. My wolf let out one sound inside my chest — high, animal, wrong — and went silent. Not sleeping. Silent.

I dropped.

My knees hit the stone. My vision whited at the edges. Somewhere very far away, hundreds of witnesses shuffled and did not speak. I could smell Maci's rose oil already moving forward — she had been standing that close the whole time, waiting on her cue like an understudy who knew the script better than the bride.

She stepped past me. Her heel clicked once beside my hand. When I lifted my head — because I lifted my head; I had already decided I would not go down looking at the floor — she was settling into the Luna seat with a rehearsed, precise smile. The kind you practice in a mirror. Kaden did not look at me. He was looking at her, and his jaw was set in the shape of a man who had made his peace with the choice months ago.

Three years. I had catalogued every drift in his scent for three years and told myself each one meant nothing.

"Hold her."

His voice, flat. Two Omegas moved before I could get a knee under me. Then four. Hands on my shoulders, my forearm, the back of my neck. My cheek went against cold stone. I did not fight them. I did not have the muscle to fight them; the bond-shock was still shaking through my ribs like a second heartbeat that had forgotten the rhythm.

I saw the brand come out of the coals.

Silver. White at the tip.

I locked my jaw before it touched me, because I had already decided I would not scream in this hall. I would not give them that. I fixed my eyes on Kaden's face and I catalogued him instead — the small twitch at the corner of his mouth, the way he did not quite watch, the way Maci did watch, hungry.

The brand hissed into the soft skin of my inner wrist.

My own flesh. Burning. That smell.

My wolf did not stir. My wolf was gone. But something under her — something deeper, sealed — pressed once against the inside of my chest and then went still under the silver's cold weight.

I did not scream. I breathed through my teeth and counted Kaden's blinks.

When they lifted me, I let them. When they dragged me down the long aisle between the packmates who had toasted me at midsummer, I let them. Nobody's eyes met mine. Not one. I logged that too.

They dumped me past the border stones in the snow.

---

I do not remember all of the forest. I remember the cold of the brand was worse than the heat had been — a suppressive, reaching cold that pushed down into the place my wolf used to answer from. I remember my sleeve froze to my wrist and I did not pull it free because the pain kept me awake and awake was the only currency I had left.

I remember crossing onto Ironcrest ground because the trees changed — older, taller, cleaner scented.

I stopped at the edge of a patrol trail. I did not call out. I did not weep. I sat down against a pine with my branded wrist across my knee where any wolf with a nose would smell the silver before they smelled the blood, and I waited.

I was not going to arrive as a victim. I was going to arrive as someone with something to trade.

---

The warriors carried me. I heard doors, then warmth, then a voice ahead of us — quiet, and the room around it went quieter.

I smelled him before I saw him. Wildfire. Cedar under it. My damaged nose caught the edges of it and my chest did something strange — a pull toward, from a place my wolf should have answered from and didn't.

Damon Carter did not move toward me. That is what I remember most clearly. A Lycan Prince, and he held himself perfectly still by a long stone table, and only the muscle along his jaw moved. His eyes had gone very dark.

A pulse of aura went through the room — brief, involuntary, gone before it settled. Every warrior flinched. I did not. I could not feel it the way they could.

"Healers," he said. "Shelter. Whatever she needs."

"No."

My voice came out lower than I expected. Steady. I sat up on the bench they had laid me on and I pulled my sleeve down over the brand — not from shame. Because I had already learned tonight how eyes drop.

"I'm not asking for charity, Prince Carter. I'm offering a trade."

His head tilted, one degree.

"Silverpine border intelligence," I said. "Patrol rotations. Weak sectors. The names of the wards Kaden thinks nobody knows about. In exchange, a formal pack-protection vow. Temporary shelter. Standing under Ironcrest law. No mate bond. No debt. No ownership."

Something behind his eyes moved and was locked down again. His jaw tightened the way I would come to recognize later.

A long beat.

"On your terms exactly," he said.

His Beta stepped forward with the recording stone before I had to ask for one. We spoke the vow aloud, clause by clause, and when it sealed I felt it settle — not warm, not cold, just a line drawn.

I stood up. My legs held.

"Elias, is it?" I said to the Beta. "I'll need a map of the border sectors. Tonight."

I did not look back at Damon as I walked out.

But I heard him exhale behind me — one breath, held too long, finally released — and I heard the quiet sound of a Lycan Prince deciding, in silence, to wait.
