My husband's infidelity partner is my best friend
My husband's infidelity partner is my best friend Chapter 1
The manila folder felt heavy against my ribs. Inside lay the architectural bids and zoning clearances for the harbor project—the exact leverage Bob needed to save his firm next quarter. I had spent four grueling hours laughing at dry jokes and pouring vintage Chardonnay for three snooty council wives at the country club just to get it.
My neck ached. My feet burned inside my pumps.
"Just a warm bath," I whispered to myself, turning the key in the front door. "A glass of water, and ten hours of sleep."
The lock clicked open.
A wet, guttural moan echoed down the marble foyer.
I paused by the coat rack, keys dangling between my fingers. The house should have been empty; Bob had texted me an hour ago claiming he was stuck reviewing blueprints downtown.
Another sound followed—a sharp slap of bare flesh, paired with a woman’s breathy cry.
"Harder, Bob... fuck, right there..."
My stomach dropped into a bottomless pit. I knew that voice. I had known that voice since college.
I moved toward the living room, my legs stiff, every instinct screaming at me to turn back.
On the white leather sectional, Emily’s thighs were hooked over Bob’s shoulders. My best friend’s head was thrown back against the cushions, her knuckles white as she gripped his hair. Bob was on his knees between her legs, thrusting into her with sweaty, violent strokes, his face buried between her breasts.
"Bob?"
The single syllable ripped out of my throat, thin and choked.
The folder slipped from my numb fingers. Dozens of papers scattered across the dark hardwood floor with a dry, rustling clatter.
Bob froze instantly inside her. His head snapped toward me, his eyes stretching wide in pure terror. "Tracy!"
Emily gasped, shoving him off in a frantic scramble. She fell sideways onto the floorboards, grabbing Bob’s discarded dress shirt to press against her bare breasts. Her mascara was smeared down her cheeks, her chest heaving.
"Bob, get off me!" Emily shrieked, suddenly sobbing. "Oh God! Tracy! No, no, no—"
Bob stumbled to his feet, fumbling with his trousers, his hands shaking so violently he could barely pull the zipper up. "Tracy, wait. Listen to me. Don't look at it like that. Please."
"Don't look at it like that?" My voice sounded foreign, hollow, like it was echoing from the bottom of a well. "You’re fucking my best friend on my living room sofa."
"It's not what you think!" Emily crawled forward on her bare knees, heedless of the wood scraping her skin. She reached up and grabbed my wrists, her grip frantic and sweaty. "Tracy, please! I tried to stop. I really struggled with it, I swear to God! I didn't want this!"
I yanked my hands back as if she were made of fire. "You didn't want this? You were screaming his name!"
"I couldn't help it!" Emily burst into hysterical tears, pressing the shirt against her face. "Tracy, I fought it for months! I just... I love him. I’m so in love with him, Tracy!"
"Shut up, Emily!" Bob roared, rounding the couch. He dropped to his knees right in front of me, grabbing the hem of my skirt. "Shut your fucking mouth! Tracy, look at me. Look at me, baby."
I stared down at him, my vision blurring with stinging tears. "How long?"
"It was an accident," Bob pleaded, his voice breaking. Tears were actually rolling down his cheeks, pooling in the stubble along his jawline. "It was just today. A moment of weakness. The pressure with the company, the stress... I lost my fucking mind. It’s a mistake, Tracy. Just a horrible, disgusting mistake."
"You brought her into our home, Bob."
"I know! I'm scum, I'm a piece of shit!" He buried his face against my knees, sobbing openly, his shoulders shaking with genuine agony. "Please don't throw away five years of marriage over my stupidity. Kick me, hit me, do whatever you want, but don't leave me. I only love you. Only you, Tracy."
Emily pulled herself up from the floor, clutching the shirt tightly around her neck. "I'll go," she choked out between sobs, not daring to meet my eyes. "I'll leave. Tracy, hate me if you want, but Bob truly loves you. This was all my fault."
She grabbed her skirt and heels from the corner, bolting toward the front door without looking back. The heavy oak door slammed shut, rattling the glass panes.
Silence flooded the room, thick and suffocating.
Bob stayed on his knees, weeping against my legs, his fingers clutching my dress as though letting go meant death. "Tracy... forgive me. Please, forgive me."
I stood there, looking down at my husband, feeling my chest split open. Five years. We built this life from empty bank accounts and late-night takeout dinners. He had held me when my father died. He had stayed by my hospital bed when I had pneumonia.
"Get up," I whispered hoarsely.
He rose slowly, his eyes bloodshot, his face entirely shattered.
Upstairs, the bedroom was cold. Bob followed me like a condemned man awaiting his sentence.
When I sat on the edge of the mattress, he collapsed before me again, pulling off my heels with gentle hands, resting his forehead against my bare feet.
"I don't deserve you," he rasped, his voice raw. "I don't deserve to breathe the same air as you."
"Why did you do it, Bob?"
"I don't know," he cried, reaching up to cup my face with trembling hands. "I was weak. I was pathetic. But seeing your face down there... it felt like my world ended. Tracy, I swear on my mother's grave, I will spend every single second of my life making this up to you."
He pressed his lips to mine, desperate, tasting of salt and tears. His hands slid to the buttons of my blouse, undoing them with an aching tenderness.
"Bob..." I tried to turn my face away, but the sheer grief in his eyes rooted me in place.
"Let me show you," he whispered against my throat, his lips hot against my skin. "Let me show you who you are to me, Tracy. Please. Just feel how much I need you."
He undressed me carefully, stripping away the clothes that still carried the scent of the country club. When he pushed me back onto the pillows, he entered me with a soft, reverent groan, murmuring my name like a prayer.
"Tracy... Tracy, fuck, you're my wife," he breathed, his hips moving in slow, deep rhythms that filled every hollow ache inside me. "You're the only woman I fucking want. Look at me. Tracy, open your eyes."
I opened them, staring into his gaze as he buried himself deep inside my body. His face was twisted with raw emotion, his tears dripping down onto my collarbone as he fucked me with a gentle, bruising desperation.
"I'm sorry," he whispered, thrusting deeper, his voice breaking on every stroke. "Tracy, I love you so fucking much. Tell me you forgive me. Tell me you're mine."
"Bob..." My fingers dug into the tight muscles of his back, tearing at his skin. A sob tore from my throat as my hips arched up to meet his, drowning in the collision of betrayal and familiarity.
"Mine," he growled softly, spilling his heat deep inside me, burying his face in the crook of my neck until our ragged breathing settled into the quiet night.
Hours later, the room was dark.
My body was exhausted, but my chest still carried an unbearable weight. I had chosen to believe him. I had to. Five years couldn't be erased by an hour of madness.
Beside me, the mattress shifted.
Bob quietly pulled back the duvet. He slipped out of bed, naked, and walked quietly toward the French doors that opened to the master balcony.
I blinked against the dim light, intending to call out and tell him to come back under the blankets.
He slid the glass door shut, leaving only a tiny crack open to the cool night breeze. Then, he raised a phone to his ear.
Curiosity tightened in my throat. I shifted silently toward the glass, barefoot on the rug.
Through the crack in the door, Bob's voice drifted inside. The tears were gone. The trembling was gone. His tone was smooth, steady, and terrifyingly cold.
"She believed it," Bob said into the receiver.
A faint pause followed. Then, the distinct, teasing chime of Emily's laughter floated through the speaker.
"Good," Emily replied from the other end. "Then our plan can continue."
