My Husband's Ex-Girlfriend's Cat Nurses My Daughter
Chapter 3
After speaking, the two of them hurriedly put on their coats. As they were leaving, Neil gritted his teeth and threatened me, "If anything happens to Poppy, I'll never forgive you!"
Watching their hurried departure, my heart finally settled. Without daring to delay any longer, I immediately called a contractor online.
"I need five hidden cameras. Yes, the kind that can record audio too. How fast can you get here? Can you come any sooner? I'll pay extra!"
After getting a positive answer, I finally felt completely at ease.
The next moment, Ella's crying came from the bedroom. I rushed in and quickly picked her up to comfort her. Then, I tentatively tried breastfeeding her. Seeing her suckling obediently, I could not hold back my tears.
After soothing Ella, Leah called.
"Claire, did you drink that nourishing soup? There's more in the pot. You absolutely must remember to drink it."
I tried to sound normal. "I know, Leah. I'll drink it. By the way, is Poppy okay?"
I deliberately sniffled, pretending I had just been crying. "I'm sorry, Leah. I just gave birth, and I'm under a lot of stress. What I did earlier was impulsive of me. Poppy's okay, right?"
Leah was quiet for a moment, then sighed heavily. "She's fine, just a little shaken up."
Suddenly, she raised her voice. "You absolutely can't do something like that again! Do you hear me?"
"Okay. When are you coming back?"
"Probably tonight. Remember to drink the soup."
After that, Leah ended the call.
Not long after, the contractor arrived to install the cameras. By the time he was done, it was nearly 6:00 pm. When he left, I specifically asked him to help me throw out the soup in the pot.
Neil and Leah returned around 11:00 pm. Seeing me waiting at the door, Neil looked wary as he held Poppy in his arms.
I quickly apologized, repeatedly saying I was wrong.
"So, you do know you were wrong? This is a living being! What did you think you were doing? Thank God she's okay! If something had happened, I would never have forgiven you!"
At that moment, I even saw murderous intent in Neil's eyes.
Poppy lay contentedly in his arms, deliberately blinking a few times before sticking her tongue out at me. Finally, she smugly placed her paw on Neil's chest, as if declaring ownership.
Leah went straight to the kitchen. When she saw the empty pot, she came out smiling.
"Claire, you finished it all?"
I nodded, and then she and Neil exchanged a glance.
"Alright, we should get to bed, then. It's late. You should sleep too."
After speaking, Neil carried Poppy into his bedroom. As he closed the door, I saw him frantically kissing Poppy's face.
…
At 1:00 am, I was still wide awake. There was half an hour left until feeding time, and my anxiety was growing.
Ten minutes later, my bedroom door was pushed open by a crack. Neil softly called my name, "Claire, Claire? Are you asleep?"
I kept my eyes tightly shut, not daring to respond. He assumed I was sound asleep and tiptoed in.
Through the darkness, I squinted and watched him carefully place Poppy next to Ella.
