My Husband Signed Me Into a Mental Facility Chapter 1

The ballroom glittered like something out of a magazine spread—crystal chandeliers, marble floors polished to a mirror shine, and two hundred people in expensive clothes pretending the champagne wasn't overpriced. I stood in the doorway with Elliott's hand warm against the small of my back, and I felt the twins shift under my ribs. One of them kicked. I pressed my palm there without thinking.

"Ready?" Elliott's voice was quiet, meant only for me.

I nodded. The charcoal dress I'd chosen hung loose enough to be comfortable, fitted enough to make the pregnancy obvious. I wanted it obvious. I wanted everyone in this room to see exactly how far I'd come from the woman they remembered—or thought they remembered.

We moved into the crowd. People smiled. Hands were shaken. I answered questions about due dates and nursery colors with the same pleasant distance I used for weather and traffic. Elliott stayed close but not hovering, his presence steady as a wall at my back.

Then I saw him.

Dante stood near the bar, champagne glass in hand, mid-conversation with someone I didn't recognize. He looked the same—same sharp suit, same commanding posture, same face I used to trace with my fingertips in the dark. For a second, maybe two, I felt nothing. Just a blank space where a reaction should have been.

Then he turned his head and saw me.

The glass stopped halfway to his mouth. His expression cracked—just for a heartbeat—before he smoothed it over. But I'd seen it. The shock. The way his gaze dropped to my stomach and stayed there too long. The way his knuckles went white around the stem of his glass.

I looked away first. Not because I was afraid. Because I was done.

"Juliet."

The voice came from my left, soft and sweet as poisoned honey. I turned and found Araceli Diaz gliding toward me in a dress the color of fresh cream, arms already open for an embrace I hadn't agreed to.

She folded me into a hug that smelled like expensive perfume and old lies. "Oh my God," she breathed against my ear. "Look at you. You're glowing."

I stepped back, keeping my smile in place. "Thank you."

Her hands lingered on my arms, fingers light as spider silk. Her eyes—wide, concerned, brimming with false warmth—searched my face. "Are you sure you're well enough for all this, darling? The work, the travel—it must be so demanding in your condition."

There it was. The needle hidden in the kindness.

I met her gaze and held it. "I'm perfectly well. Thank you for asking."

"It's just—" She tilted her head, lips pursing in that way she'd perfected years ago. "I worry. You've been through so much. We all just want you to be safe."

The twins kicked again, harder this time. I let the silence stretch until it started to turn uncomfortable. Then I smiled—the kind of smile I'd learned from Elliott, warm and empty as a hotel lobby.

"That's very kind," I said. "You and Dante look so happy together. I'm glad things worked out for you both."

Her expression flickered. Just a flash, gone before I could name it. But I saw it.

"We should catch up properly," she tried, voice brightening. "Maybe coffee? I'd love to hear—"

"I'm sure we'll run into each other again," I said, already turning. "Excuse me."

I moved back into the crowd before she could respond. Elliott was there instantly, his hand finding the small of my back again. He didn't ask if I was okay. He already knew.

I glanced back once. Dante stood three feet behind where Araceli had been, champagne glass still frozen in his hand. He was staring at me like I was a ghost. Or a stranger. Or something worse—a door that used to be open and was now locked from the inside.

A colleague stepped into his line of sight, speaking to him. Dante didn't respond. The man tried again, louder. Finally, Dante blinked and turned, his mouth moving in what might have been an apology.

I looked away.

The rest of the evening blurred into handshakes and small talk. I answered questions about the firm's new project, smiled at jokes I didn't find funny, and drank sparkling water from a champagne flute. Elliott stayed close, a quiet anchor in a room full of noise.

Later—maybe an hour, maybe two—I stood near the bar waiting for another water when Dante appeared at my elbow. No Araceli this time. Just him, holding a glass he hadn't touched, eyes too bright and too searching.

"Juliet." My name in his mouth sounded wrong. Too familiar. Too late. "I didn't know you'd be here."

"It's a work event," I said. "I work."

"Right. Of course." He shifted his weight, and I caught the faint scent of his cologne—the same one he'd worn when we were married. My stomach turned. "How have you been?"

"Fine."

"The pregnancy—" He gestured vaguely toward my stomach, and I resisted the urge to step back. "Is it going well?"

"Yes."

"That's good. That's—" He swallowed. "Are you happy?"

I looked at him then, really looked. Saw the lines around his eyes that hadn't been there before. The tension in his jaw. The way his hand gripped the glass like it was the only thing keeping him upright.

"Very," I said.

His face did something complicated. I didn't wait to see what it resolved into. I took my water from the bartender, murmured an excuse, and walked back to Elliott.

Dante stayed at the bar, holding his untouched drink, watching me go.

I didn't look back again.
