The Broke Man I Loved Was a Billionaire Chapter 1

HARPER'S POV

Vivian looked straight at me before she knocked my mother's ashes off the table.

Her elbow moved deliberately. The blue urn struck the porch boards, and its lid rolled beneath Nolan's shoe.

For one second, nobody spoke.

Then my best friend pressed a hand over her mouth.

"Oh, Harper. I didn't see it."

"You looked at it."

A pale heap lay between the broken pieces. Yesterday, I had signed for that urn with a pen that barely worked. This morning, I had brought Mom to Nolan's river house because he said we would scatter her ashes together.

Now Vivian's champagne dripped into them.

"You did that on purpose."

"Harper, listen to yourself," Nolan said.

I caught Vivian's sleeve. "Get away from her."

She stumbled into him before I could push her, making a small, frightened sound.

Nolan shoved me.

My hip hit the boards. Pain shot through my side, close to the scar I had stopped showing him eighteen months ago.

"Touch her again," he said, "and see what happens."

"That's my mother."

"She's dead. What's the point of keeping her ashes?"

I stared at his mouth.

Six years. I had kissed that mouth for six years.

Vivian stood behind his shoulder, rubbing an arm I had barely touched.

"It's stuffy out here," she whispered.

Her fingers found the switch beside the open doors.

The huge ceiling fan roared overhead.

"No."

The first gust lifted the gray powder.

I threw myself across the floor, cupping both hands around what remained. Ash slipped through my fingers. Wind pushed it toward the open railing and the river beyond.

"Turn it off!"

Vivian backed away.

"You're scaring me."

"The switch. Nolan, please."

He stepped between me and the wall.

I tried to reach around him. He caught my wrist.

"Calm down."

"Then stop it!"

I clawed at his sleeve. He released me with a disgusted sound, took out his phone, and pointed it at my face.

"Since nobody believes what I deal with, here you go."

A red symbol appeared on his screen.

He was streaming.

My hair whipped across my eyes. I dragged the tablecloth onto the floor, trying to cover the scattering remains, but Nolan's foot pinned one corner.

"Move!"

"Look at her," he told his viewers. "This is what happens when Vivian makes one innocent mistake."

"Nolan, please don't embarrass her," Vivian said, watching the screen.

She made no attempt to reach the switch.

I crawled under his arm and slapped the wall until the blades slowed.

Silence came too late.

The porch boards were bare except for broken pottery. Whatever had not vanished through the railing had blown into the wet garden below. I searched the cracks with shaking fingers.

There was nothing I could gather.

Nothing I could put back.

Mom had asked for the little beach where she taught me to swim. I had promised.

"Get up," Nolan said. "The neighbors can see you."

I held the blue lid against my chest.

I remembered another floor.

My bathroom, last winter. A fever had left me too weak to stand, and Nolan had promised to bring medicine.

Then Vivian called.

"My heels cut my feet. I can't walk to the car."

He left with the thermometer still in his hand.

When I called again, he answered with music behind him.

"She actually needs help, Harper."

On my birthday, I had arrived at the restaurant carrying the cake Mom baked. The banner read CONGRATULATIONS, VIVIAN.

My dinner had become her promotion party.

Nobody had warned me.

Nolan told me birthdays happened every year. Vivian's advancement mattered.

I stood there while the candles melted inside the box.

And before all that, there was the hospital.

Nolan needed a kidney. I matched. We had briefly separated, and I asked the transplant team to keep my directed donation confidential while he recovered. I wanted him alive before we decided anything else.

Vivian visited him with flowers.

By the time I could stand straight, he was calling her the woman who saved his life.

"Ask the hospital," I begged later. "I'll authorize them to confirm it."

"They won't discuss the donor."

"Because I asked for privacy. I'm trying to change that."

"Stop stealing the one good thing she did for me."

I sent my own paperwork. He left it unopened.

Vivian wore a bracelet he bought to thank her.

She wore it now.

My mother had kept a spare key for Vivian through college. She called her our extra daughter and packed food for her on Sundays. I looked at the woman Mom had loved, waiting for some flicker of shame. Vivian checked whether her bracelet had been scratched when I fell.

"You're getting ash on your dress," she said.

I stood slowly.

Nolan lowered his phone. "Finally."

"Give me the lid."

"What?"

He had taken it while I searched. He tossed it onto the table, and I caught it before it fell again.

My phone vibrated.

In the Brighton Events work group, someone had posted Nolan's video.

Is she having a breakdown?

No wonder clients complain.

Someone remove her before Monday.

Vivian looked down at her own phone. A smile touched her mouth, then disappeared.

A private notification followed.

Human Resources.

Effective immediately, your employment is terminated. Instructions regarding final pay and company property will follow.

Nolan's family owned a share of Brighton. I had spent four years making their celebrations run smoothly.

Today, they dismissed me between two laughing reactions.

"Harper," Nolan said, "apologize to Vivian, and we can discuss this."

I put my phone away.

I took the empty lid.

Then I walked out.

By the time I reached the bridge, the sky had turned the color of dirty water.

Cars passed behind me. Somewhere, a dog barked. Ordinary sounds continued while I stood with an empty piece of pottery and nowhere I believed I could go.

Mom's number was still pinned to my favorites.

I pressed it.

Her recorded voice asked me to leave a message.

"Mom."

The word broke apart.

I could not imagine the next morning. That frightened, exhausted part of my mind mistook that failure for proof there would never be another one worth reaching.

I went over.

The cold was immediate.

So was terror.

I wanted air. I wanted the call to end differently. I wanted to be back on the pavement, asking anyone for help.

A voice cut through the dark.

"Look at me!"

I caught a glimpse of a low landing.

A man leaned from a wheelchair, one hand braced against the rail. Beside him, a woman shouted into a phone.

"Keep looking at me," he said.

I struggled toward his voice.

Hands caught me. His grip hurt, solid and real, as he and the woman hauled me onto the landing.

I coughed until my chest burned.

"Ambulance is coming," the woman said.

The man took off his coat and wrapped it around me.

Dark hair fell across his forehead. His eyes stayed on mine.

"I lost her," I whispered.

"I know you're hurting."

"There's nothing left."

He shook his head once.

"Stay with us anyway. Just until help gets here."

His hand rested beside mine, open.

After a moment, I held it.
