My Husband Protected His Mistress While I Lost Our Baby Chapter 1

The examination room at Seattle Presbyterian Hospital smelled like bleach and cold air.

"The mass is pressing against your hippocampus, Mrs. Daniels," the neurosurgeon said. He clicked through the black-and-white MRI scans on his screen. "It’s operable. But it is time-sensitive. We need to schedule surgery soon."

I gripped the large brown envelope in my lap. My knuckles were chalk-white.

I didn't tell him my other secret. In my purse was an ultrasound strip from earlier that morning. Eight weeks pregnant. A tiny heartbeat, like a fluttering moth.

I was terrified. I was trembling so hard my teeth clicked. I walked out into the gray Seattle drizzle with only one thought in my head: *I need Ignacio.*

Ignacio Daniels was my husband of seven years. We met when I was twenty-one, back before he took over Daniels Corporation. I had spent seven years smoothing his collars, organizing his schedule, and loving him with everything I had. If anyone could tell me things would be okay, it was him.

I drove straight to the Daniels Corporation tower.

The private elevator hummed as it carried me up to his executive suite. I held the MRI scans against my chest. Over and over, I rehearsed the words in my head. *I'm sick, Ignacio. But we're having a baby. Please hold me.*

I stepped into the top-floor lobby. His secretary’s desk was empty.

His office door stood slightly ajar.

I raised my hand to knock, but a soft, breathy gasp stopped me.

"Ignacio... stop, someone might see," a woman whispered.

"Let them look," Ignacio’s voice answered, low and rough.

I peeked through the crack.

Ignacio had a woman pinned against his walnut desk. His hands were tangled deep in her dark hair. His mouth was bruised against hers. The platinum wedding band on his left finger caught the glare of the recessed ceiling lights.

The woman giggled, arching her back. I saw her face.

Rowan Meyer.

My stomach dropped into a bottomless pit. Rowan was the daughter of Sophia Meyer—the woman who had seduced my father, destroyed my family, and driven my mother, Penny, into an early grave. Now, Sophia’s daughter was taking my husband.

History wasn't just repeating itself. It was cutting my throat.

My fingers went numb. The envelope slipped and hit the marble floor with a soft slap.

Neither of them even blinked. Ignacio was too busy kissing down Rowan’s neck, his hands hiking up her silk skirt.

I didn't scream. I didn't burst inside. I crouched down, picked up my scans, and walked back to the elevator. My chest was hollow. Every soft thing inside me turned to flint.

That night, I drove to Rowan’s luxury penthouse in downtown Seattle.

I carried an aluminum baseball bat from my trunk.

The front door code was Ignacio's birthday. It clicked open without resistance.

I stepped inside. The Italian marble coffee table went first. The bat cracked against the stone, sending shards flying. Then I moved to the master bedroom. I smashed the floor-to-ceiling vanity mirrors. I shredded the closet lined with designer dresses and Birkin bags, all paid for with Daniels money. Glass rained down around my sneakers.

"What are you doing?!" a voice shrieked.

Rowan stood in the doorway, pale with shock.

Before she could run, heavy footsteps pounded up the stairs. Ignacio charged into the room.

"Winnie! Stop!" he roared.

He didn't check on me. He didn't ask why I was there. His very first instinct was to throw his body in front of Rowan, shielding her behind his broad shoulders.

"Put the bat down!" he ordered, lunging at me.

We wrestled for the metal grip. He was larger, stronger, and furious. "Let go!" he yelled, and pulled back his leg.

His heavy leather boot kicked directly into my abdomen.

A sickening thud echoed through the room. Blinding agony ripped through my lower belly. The air vanished from my lungs.

I collapsed onto the carpet.

"Winnie?" Ignacio gasped, taking a step back.

I couldn't speak. Hot, thick blood poured out between my legs, soaking through my jeans and staining Rowan’s pristine white rug. Darkness closed in at the edges of my vision.

When I woke up, the ceiling was white acoustic tile.

"I'm sorry, Mrs. Daniels," the ER doctor said gently. "The trauma was too severe. You lost the pregnancy."

I lay there alone in the sterile bed. One hand rested on my flat, empty belly.

Ignacio didn't come that night. He didn't come the next day, either. His phone went straight to voicemail. No flowers. No message. Not a single word.

On my third night, the door slowly squeaked open.

A young man poked his head inside. He wore a faded hoodie and had a heavy laptop bag slung over one shoulder. His dark hair was a bit messy.

"Excuse me," he said softly. "Do you know where the vending machines are on this floor? The nurse said—"

He stopped. He saw my face, soaked with silent tears.

He didn't back out awkwardly. He didn't make an excuse to flee. Instead, he quietly set his laptop bag down, pulled a plastic chair next to my bed, and sat down.

He didn't ask questions. He just sat there in the dim hospital room, keeping watch over a weeping stranger until my breathing slowed and exhaustion pulled me under.

When I woke at dawn, he was gone.

On the rolling side table beside my water pitcher sat a paper napkin. On it was a clumsy little sketch of a sleeping cat, and beneath it, neat handwriting:

*Bad days end. I promise. — Finley Torres.*

I stared at the name. Finley Torres.

I carefully folded the napkin. I reached into my bedside bag, unlocked the small metal box that held my mother’s old letters, and tucked the paper safely inside.

The morning sun crept over the hospital sill.

I picked up the bedside phone and dialed my family attorney.

"Mr. Vance," I said. My voice was completely steady. "Draft the divorce papers. Take everything the law allows."

Underneath the white hospital blanket, my hands were trembling uncontrollably. But nobody was there to see it.
