My Husband Played My Private Video at Christmas Chapter 1

The dress was navy silk, structured at the waist, cut to hide what I was hiding. Twenty weeks. I smoothed the fabric one more time in the elevator mirror before the doors opened onto the thirty-second floor of the Hunt building, where the annual Christmas Eve party was already loud enough to hear through the walls.

I'd learned, over five years, how to walk into a room like this. Chin level. Smile soft, not wide — wide looked desperate. I stepped out into the penthouse, into candlelight and a twenty-foot tree strung with white orchids flown in from somewhere warm, into the low murmur of old money making small talk about other old money.

Eleanor Hunt found me first, the way she always did, like she had a sensor for entrances that weren't her own. "Clara. You look tired," she said, which from Eleanor was practically a hug.

"Just the traffic," I said. "Merry Christmas, Eleanor."

She didn't answer that. She never answered pleasantries, only appraised them, the way she'd appraise a piece at auction before deciding it wasn't worth the bid. Then she moved on to greet someone whose name was attached to a bank.

I found a spot near the windows where the city lit up the glass like something out of a postcard, and I put a hand low on my stomach where no one could see it under the silk. Nobody knew yet. Not Eleanor, not the cousins, not the Hunt Industries board members drifting through with champagne flutes like they were part of the decor. I'd wanted to wait until after the holidays, until I was sure, until I could tell Dominick alone, somewhere quiet, and watch his face do something soft for once.

That was the plan anyway.

I saw him across the room, tall in a charcoal suit, laughing at something one of his cousins said, and for a second I let myself feel it — that old warm pull, the thing that used to happen every time he walked into a room. I started toward him.

Then his phone buzzed in his hand, and he glanced down, and I was close enough to see the screen before he angled it away.

*Kylee.*

Just the name. No context. He didn't answer it there. He murmured something to his cousin, tucked the phone into his jacket, and drifted toward the terrace doors like a man remembering he'd left the stove on.

I didn't follow him. I'd learned that too. Following him only ever ended with me standing outside a door, listening to a conversation I wasn't supposed to hear, and then having to pretend at dinner that I hadn't heard it. So I stayed by the window and picked up a glass of sparkling water I wasn't going to drink, and I watched the reflection in the glass instead — Dominick's shape sliding onto the balcony, the door easing shut behind him, his shoulders curved in toward the phone like he was shielding a flame from wind.

I couldn't hear the words. Just the shape of his voice, low, urgent, and once, something that might have been a laugh, soft and private, the kind he used to save for me.

I looked away first.

Three days before, at a luncheon for the children's hospital wing my father-in-law's company funded, Kylee Boyd had cried in front of half the committee. I hadn't been there — I'd left early with a migraine — but I heard about it before I even got home, because Dominick was waiting for me in the foyer with his jaw set in that particular way, arms crossed, already a verdict instead of a husband.

"She said you humiliated her," he told me. "In front of everyone. Made a comment about her seat at the table not being earned."

"I didn't say that," I said. "I wasn't even —"

"She was crying, Clara." He said it like tears were evidence, like a woman touching her own collarbone and letting her voice shake meant more than anything I could say standing upright and dry-eyed. "She's fragile. You know that."

I didn't know that. I'd never once seen Kylee Boyd fragile. I'd seen her charming, and quick, and always somehow positioned exactly where Dominick's eyes would land. But I also knew that arguing with Dominick about Kylee was like arguing with weather — pointless, and it left you cold either way.

"I'm sorry she was upset," I said instead, because that was easier, because five years of marriage had taught me that peace mattered more than truth in that house.

He hadn't looked satisfied. He'd looked like a man already deciding something, filing it away for later, the way he filed away every perceived slight against people he'd chosen to protect.

Now, three days later, I stood by the window in my navy dress with my hand pressed flat over the secret growing under my ribs, and I watched him come back in from the balcony, phone gone from his hand, face rearranged into the easy warmth he wore for company.

He smiled at me across the room like nothing had happened.

I smiled back. I'd practiced that smile for years.

I didn't know yet what it was going to cost me.

The Billionaire's Doll: Her Secret Escape Novel Cover
9.2
I was just a placeholder, a warm body in silk sheets to keep the bed from getting cold while my billionaire "owner," Garrick Head, dreamt of another man’s wife. To the world, I was Ever Wells, the lucky girl he’d plucked from obscurity, but in reality, I was a doll on a 145-day contract, counting every second until I could disappear. Everything shattered when a burner phone buzzed in my hand with a message that turned my blood to ice: "I know your secret, Everly." My real name was the one thing I had buried to protect my four-year-old son, Leo, who was hidden in a cramped apartment in Queens. Just as the blackmailer closed in, Leo’s asthma flared into a life-threatening fever, and the medication he needed cost thousands I didn't have. When I tried to siphon money to save him, Garrick sensed my desperation and froze my credit cards, mocking my "poverty" and demanding I crawl back to his bed to earn his favor. The nightmare intensified at a high-society gala when Clarence Frazier, a dangerous ghost from my past, cornered me. He mouthed my real name in front of the cameras, his eyes promising to tear my fake life apart. Garrick’s possessiveness turned violent as he broke a man’s jaw for insulting me, yet in the same breath, he reminded me I was nothing but a "rented whore" he’d bought off a shelf. I had to smile while he kissed me and detach my mind while he touched me, all while siphoning pennies into a hidden account. He thought he could finalize my imprisonment with a twenty-million-dollar apartment on Central Park West, calling it a gift when it was really just a heavier lock on my golden cage. "I don't want to save the world," I whispered to the empty, marble penthouse after he fell asleep. "I just want to save my son." With a predator from my past watching my every move and a master who treated me like a pet, I realized I couldn't wait for my contract to end. I had to run tonight, or Leo and I would both die in this cage.
