Chapter 2

"I honestly wish she wasn't my mom."

The words echoed down the sterile hospital corridor.

I stopped walking. The fluorescent lights buzzed overhead, casting long shadows against the linoleum floor.

Oliver stood near the vending machines, his phone pressed against his ear. He held a thick, cream-colored envelope in his free hand.

"She completely embarrassed us last night," my son muttered into the receiver. "Vanessa didn't deserve that. My mom always ruins everything."

I stepped around the corner, directly into his line of sight.

He lowered the device, ending the call without another word.

"You ignored my calls all night," I said.

"I was busy." He waved the envelope at me. The Columbia University crest gleamed in gold ink. "Vanessa brought this over this morning. It is an invitation to the alumni gala next month."

"Your grandmother is in a coma."

"She is old, Mom. Things happen."

I studied the boy I had raised for eighteen years. He looked like a complete stranger.

"You knew," I whispered. "You knew your father took the surgery money."

Oliver crossed his arms, unapologetic. "Vanessa promised to introduce me to the board of the New York Art Foundation. I need that summer project for my resume. If I do not get it, my application is dead."

"So you let him steal from your family."

"It wasn't stealing! Dad earned that money."

"I earned it. We saved it together."

"Vanessa actually has connections," Oliver snapped, his voice rising. "She helps me. What do you do?"

My chest tightened. "I spent the last three months staying up until dawn editing your college essays. I got a medical certification just to manage your severe nut allergy so you wouldn't die at school. I learned physical therapy to rehab your knee after your hockey injury last season."

"And?" He rolled his eyes. "That is basic parenting. You are good for nothing but being a mom."

I didn't yell. I didn't cry.

I laughed.

The dry, hollow sound bounced off the walls.

Oliver frowned. "What is funny?"

A soft, floral scent masked the smell of antiseptic.

Vanessa walked down the hall, clutching a massive bouquet of white lilies. She looked perfectly rested, her makeup flawless.

"Oliver, please do not be harsh," she murmured, placing a manicured hand on his shoulder.

She looked at me, her expression a perfect mask of pity.

"Evelyn, he didn't mean it. Your mom is just stressed right now. We all understand."

"Do not speak to me," I warned.

"I am just trying to help," Vanessa whispered, shrinking back slightly. "I brought these for Margaret. I know she loves white florals."

"My mother is in a coma. She cannot smell your flowers."

"You're right, Oliver," I said, turning my focus entirely back to my son. "I am just a mom."

He dropped his arms. "What?"

"But starting today, I am not yours."

"Mom, stop acting crazy."

"You are eighteen. You do not need me to manage your life anymore. Your college applications, your hockey fees, your meals, your laundry. Handle them yourself. I am cutting you off."

Oliver's jaw dropped. The smug confidence vanished in an instant.

"You cannot do that."

"I just did. Pay for your own life."

His face flushed bright red. "Fine! I do not need you. I would rather live with Dad anyway!"

Heavy footsteps approached from the elevator bank.

Adrian adjusted his designer tie as he joined our circle. He glared at me, stepping protectively in front of Vanessa.

"Evelyn, what is wrong with you?" he demanded. "Do not drag the kid into our adult conflicts."

"He inserted himself," I replied.

"Vanessa is trying to be supportive," Adrian pressed. "You are acting unhinged. Apologize to her."

The ICU doors swung open with a violent crash.

Dr. Evans rushed out, pointing directly at me. His scrubs were wrinkled.

"Mrs. Blackwood. Margaret is crashing. Her blood pressure is plummeting."

"Do the secondary clipping," I said.

"I need the updated insurance authorization for the second OR booking immediately," he instructed. "Go to the billing desk. We are prepping her now."

I ran.

The night clerk shoved a tablet across the counter. "Log into your family portal. I need the full medical history file to attach to the new emergency claim."

I typed in my credentials. My hands shook as I navigated the digital folders.

I clicked on the master dependent file to authorize the umbrella policy.

A PDF loaded on the screen.

It wasn't the insurance form. It was Oliver's original birth record from the neonatal unit, scanned into the family history archive.

I swiped to close it, but a single line of text caught my eye.

*Blood Type: AB.*

My finger froze on the glass.

I am type O.

Adrian is type A.

It is biologically impossible for two parents with O and A blood types to produce a child with type AB. An O-type mother can only pass on an O allele.

The hospital lobby faded away. The rushing nurses, the blaring alarms, the distant chatter—everything went entirely silent.

I stared at the two letters until they blurred.

Did I bring the wrong baby home eighteen years ago?

Or did someone swap him?

"Mrs. Blackwood?" the clerk asked, leaning over the counter.

"Give me one second," I whispered.

I signed the authorization with a numb finger and handed the tablet back.

I walked quietly toward the waiting area.

Adrian and Vanessa were huddled near the cafeteria entrance, talking in hushed tones.

Oliver had left his varsity jacket draped over a plastic chair.

I stepped up to the seat.

A single, dark strand of hair rested on the white leather collar.

I pinched the hair between my fingers. I slid it into a sterile tissue from my purse, folding it carefully.

I pulled out my phone and searched for an expedited private DNA laboratory.

Eighteen years of my life had just unraveled in a single night.

What else were they hiding from me?
