My Husband Kept Me Poor to Spoil His Mistress Chapter 1

The kitchen was quiet except for the faint hum of the refrigerator and the scratch of my pen against the grocery list. Black Friday, and I was standing in my worn apron, calculator in hand, trying to make our holiday budget stretch just a little further. The old Honda needed new tires, and James had been eyeing that science kit for months.

"Mom, can I have a snack?" James called from the living room.

"Just fruit, sweetheart," I replied, not looking up from my spreadsheet. "Dinner's almost ready."

Ten years of this routine had made me an expert in stretching pennies. Ten years of believing we were just getting by, that Rhys's middle-management job barely covered our needs. Ten years of clipping coupons and shopping sales while he worked late nights and weekends.

The iPad on the counter was Rhys's—he'd left it charging while he showered upstairs. I'd never been nosy about his devices. Trust was the foundation of marriage, wasn't it?

Then it lit up.

Once.

Twice.

A dozen times in rapid succession.

Notification after notification flooded the screen, each one a dagger to my heart.

"Hermès: Your order confirmation for the Birkin bag in Rouge H has been shipped to Selena Payne."

"Tiffany & Co.: Your custom diamond set has been delivered to Selena Payne."

"Porsche Seattle: Your custom 911 Turbo S has been prepared for pickup by Selena Payne."

My fingers trembled as I touched the screen, scrolling through hundreds of notifications. Designer clothes. Jewelry. A penthouse reservation at the Four Seasons. All for Selena Payne.

Selena Payne.

The name hit me like a physical blow. High school memories crashed over me—her perfectly manicured nails digging into my arm, her whispered threats, her promise that she would take everything I ever loved.

"Mom?" James called again.

I couldn't answer. My throat had closed up entirely.

I grabbed my keys and drove downtown, my hands gripping the steering wheel so tightly my knuckles went white. The address Rhys had given me over the years led to a mid-level office park—nothing special, just a place where people in cubicles did their jobs.

But that's not what I found.

Instead, a gleaming skyscraper pierced the Seattle skyline, all glass and steel and arrogance. Montgomery Tech Conglomerate towered over the surrounding buildings like a king surveying his domain.

I parked illegally and approached the entrance, my heart hammering against my ribs.

"Can I help you?" The security guard—Marcus Webb, according to his badge—looked me up and down with undisguised disdain.

"I'm looking for Rhys Montgomery," I said, trying to keep my voice steady. "He works here."

Marcus laughed, the sound sharp and cruel. "Lady, Rhys doesn't just work here. He owns the place. The entire building. The whole company."

I stared at him, unable to process his words. "That's not possible."

"Look at yourself," he said, gesturing at my worn jeans and faded sweater. "You think the CEO's wife dresses like a soccer mom from 1995? Get lost."

He stepped back inside, the glass doors closing in my face.

I sat in my car for twenty minutes, staring up at the building that should have been impossible. Ten years of lies crystallized into a single, suffocating truth.

Two hours later, I found her at Café Laurent, an exclusive spot downtown where the latte cost more than my weekly grocery budget. Selena sat alone by the window, her manicured fingers wrapped around a porcelain cup, her perfect hair cascading over shoulders draped in what I now recognized as a recent Chanel release.

She looked up as I approached, and for a split second, I saw the teenage girl who had tormented me—before her lips curved into a smile that didn't reach her eyes.

"Cora Collins," she said, her voice dripping with false warmth. "What a surprise."

I stood there, frozen, taking in the details of her life—the designer clothes, the expensive jewelry, the casual confidence of someone who had never been denied anything.

"Selena," I managed. "I saw the deliveries."

She leaned back in her chair, studying me with the detached interest of a scientist examining a specimen. "Yes, Rhys has excellent taste, don't you think? He's been so generous."

"You promised," I said, my voice barely above a whisper. "In high school, you said you'd take everything I loved."

Selena's laugh was like breaking glass. "And I have, darling. I have." She leaned forward, her voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper. "Do you know what Rhys calls you when he's with me? His 'control variable.' That's all you ever were—an experiment in loyalty."

Something inside me shifted. The shock and pain didn't disappear—they simply crystallized into something harder, colder, more useful.

I didn't scream. I didn't cry. I simply went still.

Selena mistook my silence for defeat and smiled wider, reaching for her phone to show me something. But I had already turned away.

The game had changed. And so had I.
