My Husband Framed My Parents for His First Love Chapter 1

I had always loved the silence of our underground parking garage. The cool concrete and the distant echo of tires on the street above created a strange, suspended world beneath the chaos of Manhattan. Tonight, I needed that silence to steady myself as I descended in the private elevator, the weight of a small velvet box in my coat pocket. The custom anniversary watch inside had taken months to commission—a Patek Philippe with our wedding date engraved on the back. Hayes would love it. He loved things that marked ownership.

I stepped out of the elevator, my heels clicking softly against the polished floor. The garage was dimly lit, the shadows between the luxury cars creating pools of darkness. I was halfway to my Mercedes when voices drifted from the far corner—familiar voices, speaking with an ease that made me pause.

"So how does it feel?" The voice belonged to Hugo West, Hayes's oldest friend. I could picture him perfectly—leaning against his Aston Martin, cigarette in hand, that perpetual smirk that came from a lifetime of never having to care about consequences. "Three years of playing house with a woman you despise?"

I froze behind a concrete pillar, my breath catching in my throat.

A laugh answered him—Hayes's laugh. But it wasn't the warm, indulgent sound I heard at dinner parties or in our bed. This was something else entirely: cold, hollow, utterly unrecognizable. "It's been...illuminating. Every smile, every 'I love you,' every time she falls asleep thinking she's the luckiest woman alive."

I pressed my hand against the cold concrete, steadying myself.

"And she has no idea?" Hugo's voice held genuine amusement, as if they were discussing a particularly clever practical joke.

"None. Serena's brilliant in her own way, but she's never questioned why a man like me would marry a woman like her. She thinks it's love. That's what makes this so perfect."

I heard Hayes take a step, his shoes echoing off the concrete. "The Marshall family destroyed Jolie. They thought they could just walk away, live their privileged lives. But I've been methodical. Framing Edward for fraud was phase one—he's rotting in a cell now. Catherine's locked away in that private facility upstate, so drugged she can barely remember her own name. And Serena..."

He paused, and I could almost see him smiling that cold, calculating smile I'd somehow never noticed before.

"Serena is the masterpiece. Tomorrow night at The Plaza, I'll strip her bare in front of everyone who matters in Manhattan. The recordings I've made, the evidence I've gathered—she'll have nowhere to hide. By the time I'm done, she'll be begging for the mercy she showed Jolie."

Hugo's laughter echoed off the walls. "And then you'll be free to bring Jolie back?"

"She never left. Not really. Every moment with Serena has been for her. Every lie, every touch, every promise—it's all been for Jolie. The woman I actually love. The woman they tried to take from me."

My fingers had gone numb around the velvet box. Three years. Three years of morning coffees and anniversary trips and whispered promises in the dark. Three years of believing I was loved, cherished, chosen. All of it calculated. All of it a lie.

I set the watch down silently on the ground, my movements mechanical. The small sound it made seemed impossibly loud in the echoing space.

"To Jolie," I heard Hayes say, his voice suddenly tender in a way it had never been with me. "And to the end of the Marshall family."

I walked to the elevator, my steps measured, my face a mask of composure I didn't know I possessed. As the doors closed, I caught a final glimpse of them—Hayes and Hugo, standing in the shadows, toasting the destruction of my life with casual amusement.

The ride up to the penthouse felt eternal. My mind was already working, already calculating, already building something new from the ruins of what I'd thought was love. When Hayes came home an hour later, I was in bed, eyes closed, breathing steady.

"Sleep well?" he asked, his voice warm, concerned—the voice of a loving husband.

"Always," I whispered back, not opening my eyes. "You know I do."

He kissed my forehead, the touch of his lips making my skin crawl in a way I'd never allowed myself to acknowledge before. "Big day tomorrow," he murmured. "Our anniversary. I have something special planned."

I smiled in the darkness, a smile he couldn't see. "I'm counting the minutes."

And I was. But not for the reasons he thought.
