My Husband Gave Me a Ruby for Every Mistress Chapter 1

The velvet box was navy blue. It always was.

Caspian set it on the breakfast table without looking at me. He moved straight to the coffee maker, pressed the button, stood with his back turned while the machine hissed and gurgled. His weekend bag was still by the door. He hadn't even gone upstairs yet.

I knew where he'd been. I always knew.

I picked up the box. Opened it. Inside, a ruby pendant on a gold chain caught the morning light and threw a small red star across the white tablecloth. It was beautiful. They were always beautiful. That was the point.

"Thank you," I said.

He turned, coffee in hand, and watched me clasp it around my neck. Something moved across his face—not guilt, not quite. More like a man checking a box on a list. He nodded once, the way you nod at a transaction completed.

"Board meeting at nine," he said. "Don't wait up."

The front door closed. I sat very still for a moment, my fingers resting lightly at my collarbone, feeling the cool weight of the stone against my skin.

Then I smiled. Not for him. He was already gone.

For me.

I waited until I heard his car pull out of the underground garage. Then I went upstairs.

The bedroom panel looked like any other section of wall—cream paint, a framed architectural print, a small brass hook for a robe. I pressed the lower left corner and felt the familiar soft click. The panel swung inward.

The vault was the size of a deep closet shelf. I'd had it installed eighteen months into the marriage, during a renovation Caspian approved without reading the contractor's full proposal. He had never asked about it. He had never asked about much, where I was concerned.

I unclasped the necklace and placed it in the single empty slot at the end of the bottom row.

Ninety-nine rubies. Ninety-nine boxes. Ninety-nine dates and names in the ledger—a slim leather book, handwritten, precise. I ran my finger along the spines of the velvet boxes without touching them. Each one was a record. Each one was a receipt.

What Caspian didn't know—what he had never once suspected—was where the money came from. Every necklace, every pendant, every bracelet he'd ever offered me as a quiet apology had been purchased with funds routed through accounts that traced back, if you knew how to look, to the assets seized from my father's company. The Crawford Group. The company that had employed two hundred people, that my father had built from nothing over thirty years, that the Pierce family had dismantled in fourteen months through forged documents, fabricated debt, and a hostile takeover that was never investigated because Caspian's lawyers were better than anyone my father could afford.

My mother died nine months after the bankruptcy. Cardiac event, the death certificate said. Stress, the doctors said quietly, when they thought I couldn't hear.

My father lasted another eight months. He died in a two-room apartment in Queens with a library book on the nightstand and nothing else that was his.

I had been twenty-six years old.

I closed the vault. Pressed the panel back into place. Straightened the framed print.

Then I picked up my phone and called Finn.

He answered on the second ring. No greeting. That was Finn.

"It's almost time," I said.

A beat of silence. I could picture him exactly—wherever he was, back against a wall, coffee going cold beside him, that stillness he carried like a second skin.

"How long?" he asked.

"Two weeks. Maybe three. I need the auction houses moving by end of week. Everything except the necklaces."

"Already in motion," he said. "Zurich account is clean. I'll confirm routing by tonight."

"And the other thing."

"Medical case is prepped. You sure about the quantities?"

"I'm sure."

Another pause. Finn never argued. He just paused in the places where another person might have, and let me hear that he had considered it, and then moved on.

"The filing," he said. "You want me to drop it this week?"

"Wednesday," I said. "Route it through the Page Six channel. Alondra's assistant checks it every morning by eight."

I heard the faint scratch of a pen. He was writing it down, even though he never forgot anything.

"Two hundred million settlement," I said. "Make it look real. I want her attorney's number ringing before noon."

"Done."

I stood at the bedroom window. Forty stories below, Manhattan moved in its usual indifferent rush—yellow cabs, pedestrians, a food cart sending a thin column of steam into the gray morning air. Somewhere across the city, Caspian was walking into a boardroom, straightening his cuffs, becoming the version of himself that the world paid to believe in.

He thought I was down there somewhere. Quiet. Grateful. Wearing his necklace.

"Finn," I said.

"Yeah."

"Tell the dive team to start their dry runs."

The line was quiet for a moment.

"Understood," he said. And then, lower, in the voice he only used when the operational mask slipped just slightly: "You doing okay?"

I touched the empty space at my collarbone where the necklace had been.

"I'm perfect," I said.

I ended the call. Went to the closet. Moved three hatboxes aside and checked the refrigerated case behind them—compact, locked, humming faintly. Everything in order.

One more necklace to go.

I had been waiting five years for the hundredth one.

I could wait a little longer.
