My Husband Faked Our Son’s Heart Defect Chapter 1

The thermos sat in my lap, still warm. I'd made the soup two hours ago — chicken and ginger, the kind Marco used to say tasted like someone cared. He'd missed the anatomy scan this morning. Again. Third appointment in a row. But I told myself it was fine. He was an attending. Babies came when they came, not when husbands had convenient schedules.

So I brought the scan photo instead. Twenty-two weeks. Our son, in profile, one tiny fist pressed against his mouth like he was already thinking. I wanted Marco to see it. I wanted to watch his face when he realized how real this was.

The hospital parking garage smelled like oil and old rain. I checked my phone: 11:14 p.m. Marco's shift had ended at eleven, but he'd texted an hour ago saying he was finishing notes. I knew the on-call rooms. I'd been there before, back when we were different people who did things like surprise each other.

The elevator took forever. I watched the numbers climb and felt the baby shift under my ribs, a rolling pressure that made me smile despite everything. He was always active at night. I pressed my palm flat against the movement and whispered, "We're gonna see Daddy."

The fourth-floor corridor was too bright and too quiet. A nurse I didn't recognize came around the corner, saw me, and her face did something I couldn't name. Not surprise. Something heavier. She opened her mouth, closed it, then walked past me without a word.

I should've known then.

The on-call room door wasn't locked. I pushed it open with my shoulder, thermos in one hand, scan photo in the other, already forming the words — Look, it's him, doesn't he look like you?

Marco was against the wall. Keily Nguyen was against Marco.

Her scrub top was on the floor. His hands were under her bra. Her lipstick — that dark red she always wore, the one that looked like a dare — was smeared across his jaw, his neck, the corner of his mouth.

I didn't scream. I didn't move. I just stood there holding soup.

Marco saw me first. He shoved Keily back so hard she stumbled, then he grabbed his white coat off the chair like it was a shield. His voice came out smooth, controlled, the one he used on anxious patients in triage.

"Raina. You need to calm down."

I still didn't move.

"Think about the baby," he said, stepping toward me, hands up like I was the danger in the room. "Your blood pressure — you can't get upset right now."

Keily made a soft, broken sound behind him. When I looked at her, she had her arms wrapped around herself, tears already sliding down her cheeks. She looked young. Fragile. Like I was the one who'd hurt her.

"I'm so sorry," she whispered. "I never meant —"

"Keily, go," Marco said, not looking at her. His eyes were locked on me, and I realized with a strange, distant clarity that he was calculating. Measuring. Deciding how to manage this.

She grabbed her top and ran past me, still crying, and I felt the air move as she went.

Marco took another step closer. "Let's talk about this somewhere private. You're twenty-two weeks. You need to think about —"

"Don't," I said.

It was the first word I'd spoken. My voice sounded like it belonged to someone else.

The thermos slipped from my hand. It hit the floor and the lid popped off, soup spreading across the linoleum in a slow, steaming pool. The scan photo fluttered down after it, landing face-up in the liquid.

I turned and walked.

Marco called my name. Once. Twice. Then his footsteps, fast and sharp behind me. But I kept walking, one hand braced against the wall, the other curved under my belly.

I made it fourteen steps.

Then the pain hit.

It wasn't a cramp. It was a fist closing inside me, low and vicious and wrong. I went down hard, both knees hitting the floor, one hand still braced under my belly like I could hold him in by will alone.

I heard Marco shout something. Heard running footsteps from three directions. Felt hands on my shoulders, my arms, someone saying her water didn't break, someone else saying get a wheelchair, now.

They lifted me. The ceiling lights blurred past. Voices layered over each other — twenty-two weeks, threatened preterm, get her on a monitor.

I turned my head and saw Marco running alongside the gurney, his face pale, his white coat flapping open. He was saying something to the nurse. Using words I couldn't hold onto. Cervical length. Stress response. Emotional trigger.

The nurse nodded. Her expression shifted into something careful and knowing.

They pushed me through double doors into Labor & Delivery. Someone started an IV. Someone else strapped the fetal monitor across my belly, and the room filled with the sound of my son's heartbeat — fast, steady, alive.

A doctor I didn't recognize leaned over me. "We're going to start magnesium to stop the contractions. You need to stay calm, Mrs. Williamson. Can you do that?"

I nodded. My throat was too tight to speak.

Marco appeared at my bedside, his hand closing over mine. His voice dropped into that low, soothing register he used in delivery rooms.

"You're going to be fine," he said. "Both of you. I'm right here."

I looked at him. At his jaw, where Keily's lipstick was still faintly visible under the fluorescent lights.

Then I closed my eyes and turned my face away.

The magnesium made everything heavy. My limbs. My thoughts. But I kept one hand on my belly, fingers spread wide, and I whispered so quietly that no one else could hear.

"I'll get us out of here."

The monitor beeped. My son's heart kept beating.

And Marco stood beside my bed, adjusting his watch, waiting for me to forgive him.
