My Husband Chose His Mistress Over Our Dying Son Chapter 1

James was already half asleep when I pulled the covers up to his chin. His lashes fluttered. The stuffed bear was pinned under his elbow, one of its ears bent from years of being loved.

"Mommy," he mumbled.

"I'm here, baby."

"I was really good today."

I smoothed his hair back. "You're always good."

He didn't answer. His breathing evened out.

My phone buzzed against my thigh. I pulled it out, careful to dim the screen. A notification banner from the private school app. Something about a field trip permission slip. I tapped it and waited for the parent group chat to open.

A gray box appeared instead. "You do not have access to this conversation."

I frowned. I tapped again. Same message.

I slipped out of James's room, closed the door softly, and stood in the hallway. My thumb worked fast. I logged out. I logged back in. I checked my Wi-Fi. I opened the app three more times.

Gray box. Gray box. Gray box.

A cold thing began to unfold in my stomach.

I opened the school's directory. Scrolled to the second grade parent list. My name wasn't there. Someone else's was. Harlow Cunningham. Listed as James Mendez's guardian.

My hand tightened around the phone.

I opened Instagram before I could stop myself. I typed her name into the search bar. Harlow's profile was the first result—private account, but her stories were public. I tapped.

A Range Rover in the school pickup line. James in the passenger seat, laughing. Caption: "my favorite little man."

Swipe.

James on a leather bench at a boutique, holding up a pair of white Golden Goose sneakers. Caption: "spoiling him rotten."

Swipe.

A photo of James in a navy blazer, standing beside Harlow at what looked like a fundraiser gala—a fundraiser I had never been told about, in a room I had never seen. Her arm was around his shoulders. Her lipstick was the color of raw meat. Caption: "bonus mom life 🤍"

I stared at that one for a long time.

I walked downstairs without feeling the stairs under my feet.

Corey was in the kitchen, one hip against the marble island, scrolling on his own phone. The pendant lights caught the shine on his forehead. He didn't look up when I came in.

"You took me out of the group chat," I said.

He kept scrolling. "Sylvia. Not tonight."

"You added her."

He set the phone down, slowly. When he looked at me, his face had that flat, patient expression he wore for waiters who got orders wrong. "Don't be dramatic."

"Dramatic." I said the word back to him like it was a foreign object.

"Harlow is more present for James right now. She's better connected. She has resources. She got him into that art enrichment program you couldn't figure out." He picked his phone back up. "It's for his future."

"He has a mother."

"He has you when you're not tired."

Something moved in the hallway. Margaret came around the corner in her cashmere robe, a wineglass in her hand. She had heard. Of course she had heard. She had been listening from the top of the stairs the way she always listened—patient, cataloguing, waiting for her cue.

She took a small sip of wine. She looked at me the way she looked at flowers past their prime.

"Sylvia," she said. Her voice was calm. Almost kind. "Harlow is the kind of woman this family deserves. You should be grateful she's taken an interest."

I heard the sentence twice. Once out loud. Once inside my skull.

Corey didn't defend me. He didn't even blink.

My fingers found the edge of the counter and straightened a placemat that didn't need straightening.

"I'm going to check on James," I said.

I walked out before either of them could answer.

James's door was cracked open. The glow of his television painted the wall blue. He was awake again, cross-legged on the rug, controller in his hands, the PlayStation humming softly on the shelf. Harlow's gift. Delivered by a courier in a black box last week.

"Hey, buddy." I knelt beside him and reached out to pull him into my chest.

He leaned away. It was small. A shrug of the shoulder. But I felt it in every bone.

His eyes stayed on the screen. A little animated character was building a bridge across a river.

"James?"

"I wish Harlow was my real mom."

The controller clicked under his thumbs.

"She has cooler stuff," he said. "And she never cries."

I stayed there on my knees for a moment. I watched his profile in the blue light. I watched the small furrow between his brows as he concentrated on the bridge.

"Okay, sweetheart," I said. My voice came out even. "You keep playing."

I stood. I closed the door behind me. I walked six steps down the hallway before my legs stopped working, and I slid down the wall, and I put both hands over my mouth so no sound would carry.

I let myself have three minutes.

Then I got up.

I pulled the duffel bag from the top of the closet. I moved through the bedroom like someone doing inventory. Two changes of clothes. Toothbrush. Passport. Birth certificate. The manila folder with James's medical records. My sketchbook, the one Corey called a waste of shelf space. I zipped it all in.

I stopped at James's door one more time. He was asleep again, controller abandoned on the rug, bear back under his arm. I picked the bear up. Held it against my chest. Breathed him in.

Then I tucked it back beside him and kissed his forehead, and I left.

I didn't say goodbye to Corey. I didn't look at Margaret's door.

On the sidewalk outside the brownstone, the October air bit through my sweater. My hands were shaking. I pulled up Briella's name and pressed call.

She picked up on the second ring.

"Come over," she said, before I could speak.

Her apartment in the East Village was on the fourth floor of a walk-up on Seventh Street. When she opened the door, she looked at me for one long second—at the duffel, at my face, at whatever was written on it—and then she stepped aside without a word.

The kettle was already whistling.

She sat me on the couch. She put a mug in my hands. She pulled her laptop off the coffee table, opened it, and looked at me over the screen.

"Talk," she said.

So I talked. All of it. The group chat. The Range Rover. The gala photo. Margaret's wineglass. James's shoulder pulling away from mine.

When I was done, the tea in my hands had gone cold.

Briella closed her laptop halfway and looked at me.

"There's something else," I said. "The Range Rover. The renovations. The private school upgrades. Corey's an analyst, Bri. A mid-level analyst. The math doesn't work."

She was quiet for a moment. Then she opened the laptop again.

"Give me his full name," she said, "his firm, and his date of birth."

I told her.

Her fingers started moving across the keyboard, fast and quiet, and outside the window a siren rose somewhere over Avenue A and faded into the dark.
