My Doctor Husband Refused to Save Me in Labor Chapter 1

The nurse called me Mrs. Reed like it was a title.

She said it three times while she hooked up my IV. Once at the door. Once when she checked my wristband. Once when she tucked the blanket around my swollen belly and smiled like I was made of something breakable and expensive.

"Dr. Reed's wife," she whispered to the other nurse in the hall. "Room four. Make sure everything's perfect."

Everything was perfect. The room was warm. The lights were low. Through the window I could see the donor plaque in the lobby downstairs, polished brass, my husband's name in the center. LUKA REED, MD. The letters caught the light every time the elevator doors opened.

He'd texted an hour ago. *Finishing rounds. Be there soon. Love you.*

I read it again. Then again. I pressed my thumbnail into the pad of my index finger and held it there. Hard enough to leave a small white crescent. I didn't notice I was doing it. I never do.

My mom used to catch me at it. She'd reach across the kitchen table without looking up from her notebook and lace her fingers through mine. *Stop that, baby. You'll bruise the bone.*

I hadn't thought about her voice in a long time.

A contraction rolled through me and I breathed it out slow, the way the class had taught. The monitor beeped in a steady rhythm above my head. Somewhere down the hall a baby cried, brand new, and I felt my mouth pull into a smile I couldn't stop.

Soon. Soon.

---

It happened between one breath and the next.

One second I was watching the second hand of the wall clock tick past twelve. The next second my chest wouldn't open. I tried to pull in air and something wet and heavy sat on top of my lungs. The monitor above my head made a sound I had never heard before. A flat, screaming siren that turned the whole room red.

"Sat's dropping," someone shouted. "She's dropping. Get Chen."

Feet in the hallway. The door slammed open.

Dr. Chen was young. Younger than Luka. He had a coffee stain on his scrub top and his eyes went very wide when he saw the numbers over my head. His face changed. That's what I remember. His face changed and he stopped being a doctor for one full second and became a person who had seen something terrible.

"Amniotic embolism," he said. His voice was flat. Controlled. Too controlled. "Page Reed. Page him now. I want him on this floor in three minutes."

"Dr. Reed?" the charge nurse asked.

"He's the most qualified trauma surgeon in this building. Page him. Every minute we wait we lose them both."

Both.

The word landed somewhere far away, in a room I couldn't reach.

I turned my head on the pillow. The sheet under my hips was warm. Wet and warm and getting warmer. I couldn't feel my legs the way I was supposed to. Dr. Chen was shouting for blood. Two units. Four units. Somebody was cutting my gown open with cold scissors.

"Luka," I said. My mouth barely moved. "Luka's coming."

Dr. Chen didn't look at me.

That's how I knew.

---

The radio on the wall crackled.

"Dr. Reed acknowledges the page. He, uh —" the voice on the other end paused. Cleared its throat. "He's citing conflict of interest. He recommends escalation to the on-call team."

Dr. Chen went still. Just for a second. His jaw locked.

"Say that again."

"Conflict of interest. He said it's inappropriate to operate on his own wife."

Someone dropped an instrument. Metal on tile. Nobody moved to pick it up.

I heard my own breath rattling in my throat. I heard the nurse near my elbow whisper *oh my god* the way you whisper it in church.

I understood then. All of it. In one clean stroke, the way you understand a knife once it's already in you.

He wasn't coming.

He was never coming.

Seven years. Seven years of measuring my voice so it wouldn't wake him. Seven years of pouring the coffee I hated into a mug that said WORLD'S BEST HUSBAND. Seven years of turning down my mother's calls until she stopped calling. Seven years of pretending I did not come from where I came from, so this man could love the polished, quiet, useful version of me.

He wasn't coming.

My hand moved before I told it to. It crawled across the sheet toward the bedside tray. My fingers were slick. Red prints smeared over the screen when I found my phone.

I opened the app I had not opened in seven years.

The messages scrolled. And scrolled. Hundreds of them. Remi's memes, dozens of them, unread. Voice notes from my mother, little blue dots stacked like a wall. And every year, on the same day in March, one line from my father.

*Thinking of you.*

*Thinking of you.*

*Thinking of you.*

I dropped the pin. My thumb was shaking so hard I had to try three times.

Two words.

*Help me.*

Send.

The phone slid out of my hand. The ceiling went soft at the edges. The last thing I heard was Dr. Chen shouting for the crash cart, and somewhere, very far away, a baby crying that wasn't mine yet.
