Chapter 1

Three days out of surgery, I still couldn't sit up without gripping the bed rail.

The incision pulled every time I shifted. The catheter tugged. My body felt like something borrowed — heavy, foreign, not quite mine anymore. But my eyes worked fine.

Through the half-open door, I watched my husband hand her another container.

Kash stood in the hallway in his charcoal blazer, the one I'd picked out for him last fall. He was holding the recovery meals my father had ordered — the ones my OB had specifically prescribed for postpartum healing. Bone broth. Grain porridge. The kind of thing that takes three days to source from a specialty kitchen in Midtown.

He handed one to Juliette Owens like he was passing her a coffee.

She stood there in a cream silk blouse, one hand pressed to her collarbone in that way she had — the posture of a woman performing exhaustion for an audience. Her hair was perfect. She accepted the container with both hands and looked up at Kash with her eyes soft and grateful.

I counted the containers on my bedside tray. One. There should have been four.

I pressed the call button. Then I waited.

When Kash finally came in, I kept my voice low. The on-duty nurse, a calm, broad-shouldered man named Noah Park, was charting at the station just outside. I didn't want a scene. I just wanted an answer.

'Those meals were prescribed for me,' I said.

Kash set his phone face-down on the chair. 'Gracie.'

'She's had three of them, Kash.'

'Juliette hasn't eaten since this morning.' He said it the way you explain something to a child who keeps asking the same question. Patient. Faintly tired. 'She's been here handling everything while I've been —'

'While you've been what?' I asked. 'Here?'

He looked at me. Something shifted in his face — not guilt, not even irritation. Just recalibration. 'You're exhausted,' he said. 'You're not thinking clearly. It's the hormones, the medication. Noah —' He raised his voice slightly, and Noah appeared in the doorway. 'She's worked up. Is there something we can give her?'

Noah looked at me. Then at Kash. He wrote something on his clipboard without answering.

Hormonal. Unreasonable.

I lay back against the pillow and said nothing else. My hands were flat on the blanket. I made them stay flat.

My mother arrived twenty minutes later.

I heard her before I saw her — that particular rhythm of her heels, fast and purposeful. Margaret Diaz did not drift into rooms. She arrived in them. She took one look at my face, one look at the tray with its single container, and walked back into the hallway.

I couldn't hear everything. I heard enough.

Her voice was low but it had that edge — the edge that meant she was done being polite. Kash's voice came back clipped, defensive. Then there was a sound.

Not loud. A single, dense impact. Then silence.

Then the sound of something hitting the floor.

I was out of the bed before I understood what I was doing. The IV stand caught. I grabbed it. I made it to the doorway.

My mother was on the floor.

She'd struck the edge of the metal doorframe on the way down. There was blood at her temple, a thin line of it, almost neat. Her eyes were closed. Kash stood two feet away, his hand still raised slightly, like he hadn't yet decided what to do with it.

I heard myself make a sound I didn't recognize.

Noah was already moving. An alarm was already going up. People came from both ends of the corridor and I stood in my hospital gown with my surgical wound pulling and watched them lift my mother onto a gurney and run.

In the hallway outside the ICU, Juliette cried.

She did it beautifully. Her hands trembled. Her voice broke on the right syllable. She reached for Kash's arm and he looked at her — really looked at her — the way he used to look at me.

He turned away from the ICU doors.

He followed her to the elevator.

He did not look back.

I stood there alone. The fluorescent light buzzed overhead. My gown was open at the back and the corridor was cold and somewhere behind those doors my mother's brain was bleeding.

I watched the elevator numbers descend.

Two days later, I was down the hall for a post-op consult when it happened. I came back to find my room wrong — the bassinet empty, the blanket pushed aside, a nurse's cart abandoned at an angle in the doorway. An emergency team was moving fast down the corridor, away from me.

I knew before anyone told me.

Noah found me in the hallway. His face was careful in the way faces get when the news is bad but not the worst.

'Your daughter is in the NICU,' he said. 'She's being stabilized.'

'Who was with her?' My voice came out flat. 'Who was in my room?'

He paused. Just a fraction of a second. But I'd been watching people's faces my whole life.

'Ms. Owens offered to sit with the baby,' he said carefully. 'I told her not to attempt a feeding. She —' He stopped. 'I've documented everything.'

I nodded once.

I looked down the corridor toward the NICU. Then I looked back toward the elevator bank.

Something in my chest went very quiet.

Not numb. Not broken. Just — finished.

I thought: okay.

I thought: okay. Now I know exactly what this is.
