Chapter 2

I found him near the elevator bank.

Kash was standing with his back to the NICU, jacket still on, phone in hand. He looked up when he heard me coming. His expression did the thing it always did — that quick recalibration, that split-second decision about which version of himself to present.

He chose tired.

'Gracie.' He said my name like it was a weight he was setting down.

'What happened?' My voice came out steadier than I expected. 'Who let her in there? Who let Juliette —'

'It was a misunderstanding.' He slid his phone into his pocket. 'She was trying to help. The baby was fussing and you weren't —'

'The nurse told her not to feed her.' The words came out flat. 'Noah documented it. He told her specifically —'

'Noah.' Kash said the name with a small, dismissive breath. 'You're going to make this about a nurse following protocol.'

'My daughter is on a ventilator.'

He looked at me then. Really looked. And I watched something move across his face that wasn't guilt and wasn't grief. It was inconvenience. The specific, tight expression of a man whose afternoon has been complicated.

'Maybe,' he said, 'having a baby right now was the wrong call.'

The corridor was quiet. Somewhere behind me, a monitor beeped in a steady rhythm. The fluorescent lights hummed. I stood there in my hospital gown with my incision pulling and my hands at my sides and I looked at my husband.

He held my gaze for exactly two seconds. Then he looked past me, down the corridor, toward Juliette's end of the hall. He straightened his jacket.

'Get some rest,' he said.

And he walked away.

I turned back to the NICU glass.

She was so small. That was the thing that hit me every time — how impossibly small she was under all those wires. Her chest rose and fell with a rhythm that wasn't entirely her own. Her hands were curled into fists, tight and furious, like she was fighting something in her sleep.

I pressed my palm flat against the glass.

I didn't cry. I'd been waiting to cry, bracing for it the way you brace for a wave. But it didn't come. What came instead was something quieter. Colder. A stillness that settled into my chest like concrete setting.

I thought about my mother behind the ICU doors two floors up. The thin line of blood at her temple. Kash's hand still raised.

I thought about the containers on my bedside tray. One. There should have been four.

I thought about Juliette's face when she accepted them — eyes soft, grateful, performing exhaustion for an audience of one.

I stood at that glass for a long time.

---

The room was dark when I got back. I didn't turn on the light.

I sat on the edge of the bed. The IV stand stood in the corner like a sentinel. Outside, the hospital moved in its slow nighttime rhythm — soft footsteps, distant beeping, the occasional murmur of voices at the nurses' station.

I picked up my phone.

I didn't think about it. I didn't rehearse what I was going to say. I just scrolled to my father's name and pressed call.

He answered on the first ring.

'Gracelyn.' Just my name. But the way he said it — like he'd been waiting, like he'd had his phone face-up on the desk all night — told me everything.

I looked at the dark ceiling.

'Mom's in the ICU,' I said. 'Ellie's in the NICU.' I paused. 'He walked away from both of them to go check on her.'

Rory said nothing. I could hear him breathing. Steady. Controlled.

'I'm done crying,' I said. 'Help me end him.'

A beat of silence. Not hesitation. Just the sound of a man shifting into a different gear.

'Tell me what you need,' he said.

Four words. That was all. No questions, no reassurances, no careful navigation of the emotional wreckage. Just: tell me what you need.

It was the most honest thing anyone had said to me in months.

Maybe longer.

I lay back against the pillow and stared at the ceiling and started talking. I told him about the meals. About Noah's clipboard. About the fraud clause I'd been turning over in my mind since my second year of law school, the one my father had made me memorize because he said it was the sharpest instrument in any contract. I told him about the shell company I'd found in the joint account statements three weeks before my due date, the one I hadn't confronted Kash about because I was thirty-seven weeks pregnant and I'd told myself I was wrong.

I wasn't wrong.

Rory listened without interrupting. When I finished, there was a short silence.

'I'll call Marcellus tonight,' he said.

'Don't move yet,' I said. 'I need him to think I've forgiven him. I need him comfortable.'

Another pause. Then, quietly: 'You sound like me.'

I didn't answer that.

Outside, the hospital hummed. My daughter's chest was rising and falling two floors below, fighting in her sleep. My mother's brain was healing in the dark.

I closed my eyes.

I thought: okay.

I thought: now we begin.
