My Husband Brought His Secret Son to Family Dinner Chapter 1

The Plaza ballroom looked like something out of a magazine. Crystal chandeliers hung from the ceiling, and white flowers covered every table. Women in designer gowns laughed behind champagne glasses. Men in tuxedos talked about stocks and summer houses in the Hamptons. I stood near the entrance and watched it all like I was looking through glass.

Catherine Grant's 65th birthday party. The event of the season. My mother-in-law had planned it for months.

I smoothed down my black dress. Simple. Elegant. Nothing that would draw attention. I'd learned that lesson already.

Across the room, I saw the family table. The one where I used to sit. Catherine was there in a champagne gown, smiling at guests. And next to her—

Elijah.

My husband sat with his back straight, his jaw sharp in the light. He looked good. He always looked good. Dark suit. No tie. That careless confidence that came from never doubting you belonged.

And on his knee sat a little boy.

Lucas.

Five years old. Dark hair. Round cheeks. He wore a tiny suit and swung his legs under the table. Elijah's hand rested on the boy's back, steady and sure, like he'd done it a thousand times.

Behind them stood Jenesis Vasquez.

She wore red. Of course she wore red. A dress that hugged every curve and made every man in the room look twice. Her hair fell in perfect waves over one shoulder. She leaned down to whisper something to Lucas, and he giggled. Elijah smiled.

I watched them like I was watching strangers.

Catherine had done the seating chart herself. She'd made sure Jenesis sat at the family table. Made sure Lucas was introduced to every donor, every business partner, every society wife who mattered. Made sure everyone in Manhattan knew exactly who the Grant heir was.

And where I wasn't.

I found my name card at a table near the back. Between a retired banker and his wife who spent the whole night talking about their Maltese.

I sat down. Picked up my water glass. Put it back down.

The retired banker asked if I knew the family. I said yes. He didn't ask anything else.

Dinner was served. I don't remember what I ate. I remember the sound of laughter from the family table. I remember Catherine standing up to give a speech, thanking everyone for coming, talking about legacy and family and the future. I remember how she looked right at Lucas when she said the word *heir*.

I didn't look at Elijah. Not once.

After dessert, I stood to congratulate Catherine. It was expected. I walked across the ballroom floor in my black heels, my spine straight, my face calm.

Catherine saw me coming. Her smile thinned.

"Azalea," she said. "How lovely you could make it."

"Happy birthday, Catherine," I said. My voice was steady. "Everything looks beautiful."

"Thank you, dear." She touched my arm briefly. Her fingers were cold. "You should try the champagne. It's from France."

I nodded. Smiled. Turned to leave.

That's when Jenesis stepped in front of me.

She smiled wide. Warm. Like we were old friends.

"Azalea," she said softly. "I wanted to thank you."

I looked at her. Said nothing.

"For being so gracious," she continued. Her voice had that honeyed edge. Sweet but sharp underneath. "About the arrangement. I know it must be… difficult. But Lucas needs stability. And Elijah—" She glanced back at the table. "He's such a wonderful father."

I let her words sit in the air between us.

Then I looked past her. Through her. Like she was a chair someone had left in the middle of the room.

I turned back to Catherine. "The flowers really are lovely," I said.

Then I walked away.

Behind me, I heard Jenesis's breath catch. Heard the whisper that rippled through the nearest tables. Saw heads turn.

I didn't look back.

I made it to the corridor outside the ballroom before he found me.

"Azalea."

Elijah's voice. Low. Tight.

I kept walking.

His hand closed around my wrist. Not hard. But firm.

I stopped.

"What are you playing at?" he said quietly. His face was close to mine. I could smell his cologne. The same one he'd worn on our wedding day. "That performance in there—"

"I congratulated your mother," I said. "That's all."

"You looked at Jenesis like she didn't exist."

"Did I?"

His grip tightened. Just slightly. "Don't do this."

I looked down at his hand on my wrist. The same hand that used to hold mine on the terrace at night. The same hand that had signed the papers cutting off my mother's medical funds.

I didn't pull away. I just looked.

He let go.

I walked down the corridor. My heels clicked on the marble floor. I didn't turn around. Didn't look back to see if he was still standing there.

I knew he was.

I took a car service home. The penthouse was dark when I arrived. I didn't turn on the lights. I walked through the living room, past the kitchen, down the hall to what used to be my studio.

It was empty now. My easels were gone. My tools, my clay, my half-finished sculptures—all moved to a storage unit in Brooklyn that I couldn't afford to keep.

I sat on the floor in the dark.

My phone buzzed.

An unknown number. Again.

*you looked pathetic tonight. even the waitstaff felt sorry for you.*

I read it twice. Then I deleted it.

The same number had been texting me for three years. Always late at night. Always when I was alone.

I put the phone face-down on the floor.

Outside, the city glittered. Endless lights. Endless noise. I sat in the empty studio and felt nothing at all.

Her back arched as Gabriel's fingers tightened around her waist, holding her steady while Paxton's mouth moved lower, his breath hot against her inner thigh. "You don't get to run from this," Gabriel growled against her throat, his voice like silk over steel. "Not from us." Carlotta moaned, helpless between their bodies. Gabriel was behind her, his hand tangled in her hair, lips claiming the curve of her neck. His hardness pressed against her from behind while Paxton knelt in front of her, his hands gripping her thighs like he owned them. Like he owned her. "I never said I wanted to run," she breathed, lost in the pull of them both. Paxton smirked, his lips glistening. "Then let us wreck you." And they did. Gabriel entered her from behind with a rough, punishing thrust, forcing a cry from her lips that was swallowed by Paxton's kiss. She was sandwiched between them. Gabriel's deep, commanding rhythm; Paxton's slow, sinful teasing as his mouth roamed down her chest, taking his time with her breasts. The heat built fast. Her body trembled with each movement, the slick slide of skin on skin, their grunts, her gasps. Her fingers clawed at Paxton's chest while Gabriel gripped her hips tighter, his voice a snarl against her skin. "You like being ruined by both of us?" Gabriel asked. "She loves it," Paxton answered for her, licking a line up her stomach. "Don't you, baby?" Carlotta couldn't speak. Her climax crashed through her like a lightning strike, sharp, explosive, raw. Her moan echoed in the room, vibrating against Paxton's lips, as Gabriel cursed and followed right after her. For a moment, everything stilled. Their bodies tangled. Their heartbeats synced. Then... She gasped awake.
