Chapter 3

The heavy oak door swung open, slicing through the stifling heat of the kitchen. Brooke stepped onto the tile, her emerald silk dress catching the overhead lights.

"Adrian sent me to grab the dessert plates," she said.

She didn't look at the cabinets. Her gaze dropped straight to the granite island. Next to the cooling pumpkin pie sat my open document bag. Resting right on top of a stack of bank statements was my dark blue passport.

Brooke stepped closer, her eyes locking onto the gold crest on the cover. "Planning a vacation, Claire?"

I grabbed the manila envelope and slapped it over the passport. I zipped the bag shut.

"Just organizing the filing cabinet," I said.

Brooke offered a thin, polite smile that didn't reach her eyes. "You really should let Adrian hire a maid. Sorting papers on a Friday night? You need a break from the housework."

She picked up the stack of porcelain plates and pushed her way back into the dining room.

Before the door could swing shut, Lucas shoved past it. He marched straight to the counter and slammed his laptop down next to the oven.

"I need the PDF attachments for my Stanford application," he demanded, flipping the screen open. "The community service logs you scanned yesterday."

"They are in the shared family drive," I said.

He tapped the trackpad, pulling up a Word document. I leaned over to hand him a glass of water, and my eyes caught the bold text at the top of his screen.

Stanford Admissions Essay - Final Draft.

Beneath the title, the opening paragraph stared back at me.

Brooke, the mother who taught me to serve the community, showed me that true leadership requires sacrifice.

My fingers went numb against the glass. I set it down before I could drop it.

"What is this, Lucas?" I asked.

He didn't look up from the keyboard. "My personal statement. The deadline is at midnight."

"You wrote that Brooke taught you community service."

"She sponsored my robotics team," he argued, his tone instantly defensive. "She funded the entire downtown outreach program."

"An anonymous donor funded your team," I countered. "The sponsor code is CS-17."

"Brooke told me it was her." Lucas rolled his eyes. "She said she used a code to keep it professional so the school wouldn't treat me differently."

A sharp ache flared in my chest. Over the past three years, I had drained my personal savings to keep his team afloat. I made those transfers in secret, protecting his pride so he wouldn't know his father refused to pay for extracurriculars.

"Did Brooke tell you she made exactly twelve payments?" I asked, keeping my voice dangerously low. "Did she mention the thirty-eight thousand, four hundred Canadian dollars?"

Lucas frowned, finally looking away from the screen. "She handles millions at her firm, Mom. She doesn't memorize small change."

"Did she remember paying the twenty-four separate competition fees?" I pressed. "Did she tell you about the twelve thousand dollars sitting in the reserve account for the national finals?"

"How do you know the exact reserve amount?" he snapped.

I bit the inside of my cheek. I couldn't expose my identity. Not yet. Not while I was still trapped in this house.

"I manage the household accounts," I lied smoothly. "I saw the school's public ledger."

"Well, Brooke routed it through her firm," Lucas said, waving a hand to dismiss me. "It's her money. She is my mentor."

I pointed a trembling finger at his laptop screen. "Every morning for three years, I woke up at five to pack your lunch. I wrote a note on the bottom of your lunchbox every single day. 'Speak facts first.' Do you remember that?"

"I remember it," he said, his jaw tightening.

"Then why are you burying that lesson under a lie?"

Lucas slammed the laptop shut. The sharp crack echoed off the tile backsplash.

"Because facts don't get you into Stanford!" he shouted. "Pedigree does! Brooke is a senior partner at a top law firm. She has a network. She has influence."

"And I am your mother."

"You bake pies, Mom!" He threw his hands up in frustration. "You organize filing cabinets! If I write that my stay-at-home mom taught me leadership, the admissions board will laugh. Brooke gives my application weight."

He snatched his laptop off the counter and stormed out of the kitchen, leaving the door swinging violently in his wake.

I stood frozen by the island.

You bake pies.

Twelve years ago, I was the Cross-border Consumer Strategy Director in Montreal. I managed a team of sixty people. I negotiated million-dollar contracts before my morning coffee. Now, my own son viewed me as nothing more than a maid who occasionally offered useless advice.

My sacrifice meant absolutely nothing to him.

I reached into my apron pocket and pulled out my phone. I opened my email app. My fingers flew across the keyboard, typing an address I hadn't contacted in over a decade.

Amelie Laurent.

She was my old assistant. She now ran the entire national retail division of my former company.

Subject: The 2013 Model.

Message: Amelie, do you still have the black strategy notebook I left in the top drawer of my old desk? I need it. I am ready to return.

I didn't hesitate. I pressed send.

The screen flashed. Message sent.

The phantom weight of my old life suddenly felt real again. A career restart was no longer just a desperate fantasy playing in my head. It was a tangible, actionable path.

The kitchen door shoved open once more. Adrian marched in, holding the two empty sparkling water bottles. His face was flushed with irritation.

"What is taking so long?" Adrian demanded. "Brooke is waiting for the dessert course. You are embarrassing me in front of the partners."

"I am not stalling," I said, my voice eerily calm.

I reached for my document bag to move it off the counter. I yanked the handle too fast. The zipper hadn't caught properly when I closed it earlier.

The bag tipped.

A thick, glossy rectangular card slipped through the gap in the fabric.

It fluttered through the air, catching the kitchen light.

It landed directly beside Adrian's leather oxford shoe.

The kitchen went dead silent.

Adrian frowned. He set the glass bottles on the counter, bent down, and picked up the paper.

He flipped it over.

"What is this?" he asked.

His eyes scanned the printed text. The annoyance on his face vanished, replaced by absolute, rigid confusion.

Lucas walked back into the kitchen, his phone in hand. He stopped when he saw his father's expression. He stepped closer, peering over Adrian's arm to look at the paper.

"YVR to YUL," Adrian read aloud, his voice dropping into a harsh, hollow whisper. "Vancouver to Montreal. Flight 07:10."

He looked up at me, his eyes wide.

"One way," Adrian finished.

Lucas stared at the top corner of the ticket, his face draining of color. "Mom... your name is on it."
