My Husband and Son Gave Her My Thanksgiving Seat Chapter 1

I left a strategy office in Shanghai and crossed an ocean so my husband and son could belong in Vancouver.

Adrian held my hand at the airport and promised my career would only be waiting, not gone.

For twelve years, I corrected his investor decks, packed Lucas's competition lunches, and learned to smile when people asked me to repeat a word.

Lucas once said my sesame rice balls tasted like home.

By senior year, he called Brooke Sterling his Canadian mother.

On Thanksgiving, I roasted an 8.2-kilogram turkey, polished twelve place cards, and carried the final platter into the dining room.

Brooke sat in my chair beside Adrian.

My card waited on the kitchen counter next to a white service apron.

I stayed behind the swinging door and heard their glasses touch.

“Brooke should sit beside me tonight,” Adrian said.

“Mom can eat after the guests leave,” Lucas answered.

“Everyone at school already thinks she's our housekeeper.”

“Then let's not confuse them on Thanksgiving.”

"Put this on before the doorbell rings."

Adrian tossed a white linen apron onto the granite island. A thick cardstock rectangle landed on top of it.

I picked up the card. The calligraphy was elegant, printed by the same boutique that had designed our wedding invitations.

Claire - Kitchen.

"What is this?" I asked.

"A seating arrangement." Adrian adjusted his silk tie in the reflection of the microwave door. "Brooke is bringing two senior partners from her firm. I need tonight to go perfectly."

"And my presence ruins perfection?"

"Your accent throws people off, Claire." He did not look at me. "You stumble over industry terms when you are nervous. Stay in the back and make sure the courses come out hot."

My fingers curled around the card. "My accent did not bother you when we met."

"Do not start this tonight."

"At Vancouver International twelve years ago, you held my hands and promised I could return to my career once we were settled."

"We are settled." He gestured around the kitchen. "Look at this house. I provide for us."

"I paid for this house." I stepped closer until he had to meet my gaze. "I left my position as Director of Cross-Border Consumer Strategy in Montreal. I sold the condo I owned before our marriage and wired four hundred and ten thousand Canadian dollars for the down payment."

Adrian checked his watch. "We built this together. Stop turning every sacrifice into an invoice."

"A team does not hide one member in the kitchen."

His jaw tightened. "Five years ago, my firm gave me a chance to lead the Meridian account. I turned it into a six-million-dollar commission. That is what pays for this life."

"I wrote the strategy that saved that account." I pointed toward his study. "One hundred and eighty-six pages. Forty-seven nights of market modeling while you slept."

"I presented it."

"You removed my name from it."

"Clients wanted one point of contact."

The oven timer chimed. I silenced it and pulled the roasting pan forward. Heat struck my face. The turkey had taken six hours, three temperature checks, and a last-minute trip across Richmond for the fresh herbs Brooke preferred. Twelve place settings waited in the dining room. I had polished every glass, ironed the tablecloth, and printed the menu cards.

Adrian had contributed the guest list.

"Where is my place at the table?" I asked.

He sighed as though I were delaying a board meeting. "Brooke is co-hosting. Her partners need to see her beside me. Lucas will sit near the admissions consultant. There is no sensible place left."

"There are twelve chairs."

"There are twelve useful seats."

The words landed more cleanly than a slap.

I left the kitchen and walked into the dining room. The long walnut table glowed beneath the chandelier. Place cards stood in silver holders beside folded napkins.

Adrian Bennett - Host.

Brooke Sterling - Host.

Lucas Bennett - Student Leader.

The remaining cards carried the names of partners, clients, and two parents from Harbour Prep. Mine was not among them.

At Brooke's place sat a blue presentation folder. I opened it.

The title page read Harbour Pantry Map: A Community Logistics Initiative by Brooke Sterling.

I had built every route in that report. I had spent eighteen months interviewing shop owners in English and French, walking the Downtown Eastside in winter rain, and verifying which food banks could accept late-night deliveries. Brooke had attended one photo opportunity.

Adrian appeared behind me and closed the folder.

"Do not touch that."

"It is my work."

"It belongs to the foundation. Brooke is presenting it as a firm initiative because her name gives it credibility."

"My work gave it credibility."

A reminder flashed on my phone from the Harbour Foundation portal. Sponsor account CS-17 was scheduled to release another competition payment at midnight. I turned the screen facedown before Adrian could see it. For three years, I had funded Lucas's robotics team through that anonymous code because Adrian called extracurriculars a waste until admissions officers began praising them. Brooke had discovered the program only after the first trophies appeared. Now her name sat beside Lucas's on every public brochure.

"Is Brooke presenting Lucas's outreach hours tonight too?" I asked.

Adrian's expression hardened. "She is helping his application. Do not interfere."

"Those hours came from the pantry routes I built."

"They came from the foundation she leads," he said. "This family finally has access to people who matter. I will not let your need for recognition cost Lucas his future."

There it was. My erasure had become a family duty.

"Your name gives people questions." His eyes flicked toward the front hall. "Brooke's gives them confidence."

The doorbell rang.

Adrian smoothed his jacket and transformed instantly. The irritation vanished. His smile appeared, warm and practiced.

Brooke entered first in an emerald dress, carrying a bottle of wine she knew I had already purchased. She kissed Adrian's cheek and handed me her coat without greeting me.

"Everything smells wonderful," she said, looking past me toward the dining room. "Adrian, did you move my place card to the head?"

"Right beside mine."

"Perfect."

She noticed the white card in my hand.

Claire - Kitchen.

A small smile curved her mouth. "That will keep the service smooth."

Lucas came down the stairs in his Harbour Prep blazer. He passed me without a glance and went straight to Brooke.

"You brought the partners?" he asked.

"Both of them. And one knows the Stanford regional interviewer."

Lucas's face lit up. "You're amazing."

I waited for him to ask why I wore an apron instead of a dinner dress. He did not.

More guests arrived. Adrian took the coats from my arms and piled them on the bench.

"Go check the gravy," he murmured. "And Claire? Do not make tonight about you."

I looked at the table one last time. Brooke lowered herself into my chair. Lucas sat beside her, already laughing at something she whispered.

Adrian closed the dining-room door between us.

Through the narrowing gap, I saw Brooke lift my place card, turn it facedown, and slide it beneath her wineglass.
