Chapter 4

The clock on the nightstand reads 1:40 AM.

Connor's breathing has gone deep and slow. That particular rhythm—heavy, slightly open-mouthed—means he's out. I know the sound of it the way I know my own heartbeat. I've slept beside it for three years.

I wait another two minutes. Then I reach across him and pick up his phone.

My hand doesn't shake. That surprises me, a little. I thought it would.

The passcode is 10901. His childhood home in Staten Island. He set it the week we started dating and never changed it, because Connor has always been lazy about the things he thinks don't matter. He never thought I'd use it against him. That's the thing about people who underestimate you—they hand you the keys and then act surprised when you open the door.

I sit up against the headboard. The room is dark except for the phone screen. Connor doesn't move.

I find the group chat in under thirty seconds.

The name of it is *The Board.*

There are four members. Connor. Demi. Derek Hollis. A number I don't recognize with a Manhattan area code.

I start at the top and I read.

Forty minutes. That's how long it takes. By the end, I know the name of the Brooklyn condo development. I know the square footage of the unit they want. I know the timeline—Connor planned to propose the down payment idea to me in January, framed as a 'joint investment,' my name on the mortgage, his name added later once I was 'fully committed.' I know the exit strategy: six months after closing, a slow campaign of manufactured conflict designed to make me feel like I was the problem. Demi had written out the script. Actual bullet points. *Tell her she's too controlling. Tell her she suffocates you. Tell her the relationship has run its course.*

There is a screenshot in the chat. Connor sent it on October 15th, the day after the first Costco charge. It's a photo of the La Perla bag. Red tissue paper. A black lace edge peeking out.

Demi's reply is below it.

*thank you for your service* 😂

The emoji is a saluting soldier.

I look at it for a long time.

Then I start screenshotting.

Every message. Every voice memo—there are three, Connor's voice low and conspiratorial, recapping a conversation he'd had with me about the condo, mocking the way I'd said *I want to make sure we're both protected financially.* Demi had replied: *she literally handed you the playbook lmaooo.*

I AirDrop everything to my phone. My phone sends it to the cloud. The folder is still called Q4 Tax Docs. It now contains forty-seven files.

I place Connor's phone back on the nightstand. Same angle. Screen down.

He doesn't move.

I sit in the dark for a while after that. Not crying. Not shaking. Just sitting with the full weight of it, letting it settle into my bones so I know exactly what I'm carrying and exactly how much it weighs.

It's heavier than I expected. It's also cleaner. There's no ambiguity left. No corner of my mind where a small, stubborn voice can say *maybe you're wrong, maybe there's an explanation.* That voice is gone. It left when I read Demi's bullet points.

I don't sleep. I compose.

I think about the living room TV downstairs. I think about the AirPlay icon. I think about the way Mavis set the table tonight, moving the place cards with her back to the door, thinking no one was watching.

I think about patience.

---

By six AM, I'm in the kitchen.

The house is quiet. Gray light comes through the window above the sink. I find the flour, the butter, the rolling pin in the third drawer I check. I work the pie crust the way my mother taught me—cold butter, cold hands, don't overwork it. The dough comes together fast.

I roll it out on the floured counter. I crimp the edges. I slide it into the oven and set the timer.

Then I start on the table.

I set every place with the same precision I use on my spreadsheets. Forks aligned. Glasses centered. Napkins folded into clean rectangles. I move Demi's place card two seats down from Connor and put mine where Mavis had it last night. Not beside him. Just not at the far end.

Small adjustments. Nobody will notice. That's fine.

My phone is on the counter. I pick it up and open Rachel's thread.

I type one word.

*Tonight.*

Three dots appear almost immediately. It's barely past six. She's been awake.

*I'm watching my phone.*

I set the phone face-down and go back to the oven.

The kitchen fills with the smell of butter and warm pastry. Somewhere upstairs, a floorboard creaks. The house is starting to wake up.

I wipe down the counter. I refold my apron. I check the timer.

Thirty-two minutes until the crust is done.

I have a lot more than that before dinner.
