After the Divorce, My Billionaire Husband Wanted Me Again Chapter 1

“Mr. Hayes, one more picture with Miss Bennett! You two look like the perfect couple!”

The cheerful shout echoed across the glittering ballroom, and Emma Carter froze at the entrance as camera flashes exploded around her husband while Sophia Bennett slipped naturally under Alexander Hayes’ arm, smiling as though she’d stood there a thousand times before.

Emma’s fingers tightened around the silver clutch she had spent weeks choosing for tonight because it was their third wedding anniversary, and although she wanted to believe she was looking at a misunderstanding, the way Alexander glanced down at Sophia with quiet familiarity made her stomach sink.

“Come on, Alexander,” one photographer laughed as guests applauded around them, “just one more shot because the chemistry between you two is unbelievable.”

Sophia laughed softly before looking up at Alexander with gentle eyes, and although she sounded embarrassed, she never once stepped away from him as she murmured, “They’re going to make your wife misunderstand all this.”

Alexander gave a faint smile that barely reached his eyes before replying, “People will always talk, so let them.”

Emma felt something crack inside her because she had spent the last hour waiting alone after Alexander promised he’d arrive with her, yet somehow another woman had become his partner for the evening without a single explanation.

“Isn’t that Mrs. Hayes?”

A woman standing nearby lowered her champagne glass while staring at Emma with surprise, and another guest quietly answered, “No, Mrs. Hayes is the one standing beside him.”

Someone else frowned before whispering, “Really? I thought Miss Bennett was his wife because they’re always together.”

The small circle laughed awkwardly, but every word landed like a knife against Emma’s chest.

She slowly walked forward, forcing herself to breathe even though every step felt heavier than the last, and as the crowd gradually noticed her, conversations began dying one after another.

Sophia’s smile stiffened for a heartbeat before she gracefully walked toward Emma with open arms, saying warmly, “Emma, you’re finally here, and I was beginning to worry you wouldn’t make it.”

Emma looked at the hand reaching toward her before lifting her calm eyes to Sophia’s face.

“I wouldn’t miss my own anniversary.”

Sophia’s smile flickered so quickly that almost nobody noticed.

Alexander finally turned around, and instead of guilt or relief, Emma found only mild surprise on his handsome face.

“You came,” he said quietly.

Emma stared at him for several seconds before asking, “Were you expecting me not to?”

Alexander glanced around at the growing audience before lowering his voice.

“Emma, this isn’t the place.”

She almost laughed because those four words had followed her through three years of marriage.

Not here,not now.

We’ll talk later.

Later had never come.

A middle-aged businessman approached Alexander with a broad smile before extending his hand.

“Mr. Hayes, congratulations,” he said cheerfully, then turned toward Sophia. “Mrs. Hayes, it’s an honor to finally meet you.”

Silence swallowed the group.

Sophia looked startled but didn’t correct him.

Alexander remained silent.

Emma felt every heartbeat echo inside her ears as she waited for her husband to speak.

He never did.

The businessman noticed Emma standing nearby before asking awkwardly, “I’m sorry… and this lady is…?”

Alexander finally answered.

“My wife.”

The businessman blinked twice before laughing nervously.

“Oh… I’m terribly sorry.”

Emma smiled politely, but inside she felt strangely empty because the damage had already been done.

Sophia touched Alexander’s sleeve gently while speaking with practiced innocence.

“I told you people would misunderstand us.”

Alexander nodded once.

“It doesn’t matter.”

Emma looked directly into his eyes.

“It matters to me.”

Alexander sighed as if she had become another difficult meeting on his schedule.

“Emma,” he said quietly while taking one step closer, “don’t make a scene.”

The words settled over her like cold rain.

Not “I’m sorry.”

Not “Happy anniversary.”

Not “You look beautiful.”

Just,don’t make a scene.

Emma suddenly remembered another night almost a year ago.

She had waited until midnight with a birthday cake while Alexander attended another charity dinner with Sophia.

When he finally came home, she’d asked why he forgot.

He’d looked exhausted before saying the same words.

“Don’t make a scene.”

Another memory followed.

Their second anniversary.

He canceled dinner because Sophia had called about a business emergency.

Again…

“Don’t make a scene.”

Emma closed her eyes for one slow breath.

When she opened them again, the pain had disappeared.

Not because it hurt less but because it had finally hurt enough.

She opened her handbag.

Alexander frowned.

“What are you doing?”

Emma quietly removed a large white envelope and placed it into his hands.

“For you.”

Alexander accepted it without thinking.

The ballroom grew strangely quiet as he opened the envelope.

His expression changed.

The first page carried only two bold words.

DIVORCE AGREEMENT.

Alexander slowly looked up.

“What the hell is this?”

Emma folded her hands calmly in front of her.

“Our anniversary gift.”

His jaw tightened.

“This isn’t funny.”

“I know.”

His voice dropped lower.

“You’ve lost your mind.”

Emma smiled gently.

“No.” She looked straight into his eyes. “I finally found it.”

Gasps spread through the ballroom.

Sophia stepped forward with concern painted across her face.

“Emma, maybe you should calm down because everyone is watching.”

Emma turned toward her.

“Exactly.”

She looked back at Alexander.

“They should watch.”

Alexander’s expression darkened.

“Enough.”

Emma reached into the envelope and pointed toward the final page.

“I already signed.”

His eyes followed her finger.

Her elegant signature rested neatly at the bottom waiting for his.

“I don’t want your money,” she continued softly, refusing to let her voice shake. “I don’t want the penthouse, your shares, or your last name because I’m tired of competing with another woman for my own husband.”

Alexander clenched the papers harder.

“This conversation happens at home.”

Emma slowly shook her head.

“Our marriage stopped feeling like home a long time ago.”

She stepped backward.

No tears,no shouting,no desperate pleading.

Only peace.

“Happy anniversary, Alexander.”

She turned around and walked toward the ballroom doors.

Nobody moved,nobody breathed.

The only sound came from her heels striking the polished marble floor.

Just before reaching the exit, she heard paper rip behind her.

She stopped.

Slowly,she looked over her shoulder.

Alexander stood in the middle of the silent ballroom with the divorce papers torn cleanly into two pieces.

His eyes locked onto hers with cold certainty.

“If you ever leave,” he said, his deep voice echoing through the stunned crowd, “don’t expect me to chase you.”

Emma held his gaze for one long moment, then gave him the smallest smile of her entire marriage.

“You won’t have to.”

Without another word, she walked out of the ballroom.
