Chapter 5

The pie came out perfect.

Golden crust, crimped edges, not a single crack. I set it on the counter and let it cool while the rest of the house came alive around me. Footsteps overhead. The shower running. The smell of Mavis's coffee hitting the air like a warning shot.

By noon, the kitchen was full again. By two, the table was set. By four, we were all seated, and the performance had begun.

I ate slowly. I listened. I refilled my water glass twice.

Mavis waited until the second course.

She looked down the table at the pie cooling on the sideboard, tilted her head, and said it with the sweetest possible smile. 'Store-bought, dear? I suppose not everyone has the time.'

Connor laughed. Not a big laugh. Just a small, comfortable one. The kind you make when someone says something true.

Two of his cousins exchanged a look. The one on my left—Ryan's wife, I think—pressed her lips together to hide something.

I picked up my water glass. I took a sip. I set it back down on the exact same ring it had left on the tablecloth.

'From scratch,' I said pleasantly. 'I was up at six.'

Mavis blinked. 'Oh.' A pause. 'How industrious.'

She turned back to her brisket.

I cut a piece of turkey and chewed it carefully and watched Demi, who was watching me the way a cat watches something it hasn't decided to chase yet.

She waited maybe four minutes.

'Karter.' Her voice was warm. Curious. The voice of someone asking a perfectly innocent question. 'Where's your family from again? Jersey, right?'

'Northern Jersey,' I said. 'Bergen County.'

'Oh.' She let that sit for half a second. 'That part of Jersey.' A small, knowing smile. Laughter rippled from the cousins like it had been cued.

I looked at her steadily. I didn't blink.

She took that as permission to keep going.

'It's just—' She tilted her head, glancing at Connor with wide, guileless eyes. 'I always wonder. Some women are so good at the career thing. The ambition thing.' A small sigh. 'But keeping a man really, truly happy? That's a different skill set entirely.'

The table went quiet in the particular way that means everyone heard it and nobody is going to say so.

Connor reached under the table. His hand found Demi's. He didn't hide it. He just—left it there, in the open, in full view of every person at this table including me.

Demi smiled at her plate like she'd just won something.

Mavis refilled Demi's wine.

I looked around the table. At the cousins who were finding their napkins very interesting. At Connor's aunt Jean, who was suddenly absorbed in cutting her food into very small pieces. At Connor himself, relaxed and easy in his chair, one hand under the table, completely certain that I would do exactly what I had always done.

Absorb it. Smooth it over. Go upstairs with a headache.

I set down my fork.

'Excuse me for one second,' I said. 'I want to check on something.'

I pushed my chair back and walked into the living room.

The smart TV was a Samsung, sixty-five inches, mounted above the fireplace. I'd clocked it the first night. I'd gotten the Wi-Fi password off the router sticker in the hallway around two in the afternoon, when I'd offered to bring Mavis more coffee and she'd waved me away without looking up.

I opened the AirPlay menu. The TV appeared as an option immediately.

I connected.

I opened the cloud folder. Q4 Tax Docs. Forty-seven files, organized into four categories: Receipts. Messages. Voice Memos. Transfer Records.

I walked back to the dining room doorway.

The table had resumed its noise. Connor was saying something to Ryan. Demi was laughing. Mavis was looking satisfied in the particular way of a woman who believes everything is going according to plan.

I stood in the doorway and waited for a break in the sound.

It came naturally. Conversations always pause.

'Since we're all being so honest today,' I said, 'I think it's only fair I share something too.'

I said it the way I close a budget presentation. Calm. Even. No announcement in my voice, no tremor, nothing to signal that what was about to happen would be anything other than routine.

I tapped the first file.

The TV behind me filled with light.

The La Perla receipt appeared first. Itemized. My credit card number partially visible at the bottom. The date: October 12th. I had been at a client dinner in Midtown. I had texted Connor from the restaurant that I'd be home late.

The table went very still.

I tapped the next file.

The Costco membership page. Demi Ramirez. Authorized household member. Relationship: Sister. Added: June 14th.

Somewhere to my left, a fork clinked against a plate and didn't move again.

I looked at Connor.

His face had gone the color of the white tablecloth.

'I made the pie from scratch,' I said. 'And I've been awake since one forty AM.'

I tapped the next file.

Connor's voice came out of the television speakers, low and conspiratorial, caught on his own voice memo: *—she literally said she wants to make sure we're both protected financially. Like she wrote the playbook herself—*

Demi's laugh followed it. Small and bright and recorded.

The room did not erupt. It collapsed. All the air left it at once, and what was left was just silence and the sound of Connor's voice playing in his mother's dining room while his family sat very still around a table that still had food on it.

Mavis set down her wine glass.

I stood in the doorway and let it play.
