Chapter 2

The Plaza looked exactly like I'd planned it. White roses everywhere. Candles in crystal holders. Three hundred guests in the ballroom, silk and diamonds and old money filling every seat. The string quartet played something soft and expensive. Everything was perfect.

Except the groom.

I stood in the bridal suite, staring at myself in the mirror. The dress fit like it was painted on. Lace and tulle and tiny seed pearls that caught the light. My hair was pinned up. My makeup was flawless. I looked like a bride.

I felt like a stranger.

Lucy, my stepmother, adjusted my veil. "You look beautiful, Aliana."

"Thank you."

She hesitated. "Are you sure about this?"

I met her eyes in the mirror. "Yes."

She nodded slowly and left the room.

I pressed my thumb against the inside of my wrist. Breathed in. Breathed out.

Downstairs, three hundred people were waiting to see me marry Rylan Griffin.

They were going to be surprised.

***

Rylan showed up at 10:47 a.m.

I heard the commotion from the bridal suite. Raised voices. Someone saying his name. I walked to the window and looked down at the entrance.

He was standing on the steps in a navy suit, smoothing his lapels. He looked confident. Relaxed. Like he thought this was all a misunderstanding. Like he thought I'd called him here to apologize.

He was smiling.

I watched him check his watch. He said something to the valet. Laughed.

Then a black Rolls-Royce pulled up to the curb.

The smile died.

The rear door opened. Everest Griffin stepped out.

I'd only met him once. Two days ago, in my father's study. He'd asked me one question. I'd answered. He'd said yes. That was it.

Now he was here.

He wore a charcoal suit that looked like it cost more than most people's cars. His hair was dark, touched with gray at the temples. He moved like someone who'd never had to raise his voice to be heard. He didn't look at Rylan. He just walked past him, up the steps, into The Plaza.

Rylan stood frozen on the sidewalk.

I stepped back from the window.

My heart was pounding, but my hands were steady.

***

The ballroom went quiet when Everest walked in.

I couldn't see it from where I stood, but I felt it. That particular silence that happens when someone important enters a room. The kind of silence that has weight.

My father appeared in the doorway of the bridal suite. "It's time."

I picked up my bouquet. White roses. I'd chosen them myself, back when I thought I was marrying someone else.

"Ready?" he asked.

"Yes."

He offered his arm. I took it.

We walked down the hall, toward the ballroom doors. I could hear the music change. The wedding march. The doors opened.

Three hundred faces turned toward me.

I didn't look at them. I looked at the altar.

Everest stood there, hands folded in front of him. Still. Controlled. Watching me walk toward him with an expression I couldn't read.

Rylan was in the front row. His face was white. His hands were clenched on his knees.

I kept walking.

When I was halfway down the aisle, Everest moved.

He stepped away from the altar. Walked toward the front row. Stopped directly in front of Rylan.

The music faltered. Stopped.

Everyone held their breath.

Everest looked at Rylan for three long seconds. Then he slapped him.

Not hard. Controlled. Open-handed. But the sound echoed through the ballroom like a gunshot.

Rylan's head snapped to the side. He froze, one hand halfway to his face.

Everest's voice was quiet. Conversational. It carried anyway.

"You will address my wife as 'Aunt,'"

Silence.

"Say it now."

Rylan's mouth opened. Closed. His face was red on one side, white on the other.

"Aunt," he whispered.

"Louder."

"Aunt."

Everest nodded once. Then he turned and walked back to the altar.

The music started again. Shaky. Uncertain.

I kept walking.

My father's arm was tense under my hand, but he didn't say anything. We reached the altar. He placed my hand in Everest's.

Everest's palm was warm. Steady.

I looked up at him.

He looked back.

For half a second, something moved behind his eyes. Not coldness. Not distance. Something else. Something that made my breath catch.

Then it was gone.

The officiant started talking. I heard the words like they were underwater. Love. Honor. Commitment.

When it was time for the rings, Everest pulled out a small velvet box. He opened it.

The ring inside was old. Platinum, with a single emerald surrounded by diamonds. It looked like it belonged in a museum.

"The Griffin heirloom," he said quietly. "It hasn't been worn in forty years."

He slid it onto my finger. It fit perfectly.

His eyes held mine. Just a beat longer than necessary.

I pressed my thumb against the inside of my wrist.

He noticed. His gaze flicked down, then back up.

I realized something then. The stillness everyone else read as coldness — it wasn't absence.

It was control.

Intensity, held at a very careful distance.

I didn't know what to do with that information yet.

But I filed it away.

"You may kiss the bride," the officiant said.

Everest stepped closer. His hand came up to my jaw, tilted my face toward his. His thumb brushed my cheek once.

Then he kissed me.

It was brief. Controlled. Appropriate for three hundred witnesses.

But his hand stayed on my face for half a second longer than it needed to.

When he pulled back, his eyes were still on mine.

"Mrs. Griffin," he said quietly.

I didn't trust my voice. I just nodded.

The ballroom erupted in applause.

I turned toward the crowd. Smiled. Waved.

In the front row, Rylan sat with his face in his hands.

Lola was nowhere to be seen.

Everest offered me his arm. I took it.

We walked back down the aisle together.

Mr. and Mrs. Griffin.

I had no idea what I'd just done.

But there was no going back now.
