My Fiancé Cheated, So I Married His Uncle Chapter 1

The message came through at 11:47 p.m.

I was lying in bed, staring at the ceiling of my childhood bedroom in the Carter townhouse. Tomorrow I would marry Rylan Griffin. Tomorrow I would wear the gown with the lace appliqué and the cathedral train. Tomorrow I would stand in front of three hundred guests and promise forever to a man I had spent two years trying to love.

My phone lit up on the nightstand. Unknown number. I almost ignored it.

I picked it up instead.

The message had no text. Just a video file. Forwarded from a private security system I recognized immediately — the penthouse where Rylan and I were supposed to spend tomorrow night. The bridal suite. The one I had decorated myself, choosing the linens and the flowers and the champagne.

I pressed play.

The footage was grainy but clear enough. A hallway camera. Timestamp: 9:14 p.m. tonight. Rylan's back filled the frame. He was kissing someone. She had dark hair and a red dress. Her hands were in his hair. His hands were on her waist, then lower. They stumbled toward the bedroom door, pulling at each other's clothes. The door opened. They went inside. The door closed.

The video ended.

I sat up slowly. My chest felt tight, like someone had laced a corset too hard. I replayed the footage. This time I paused it when the woman's face turned toward the camera for half a second.

Lola Daniels.

Rylan's childhood sweetheart. The one he said didn't matter anymore. The one he said was just a friend.

I watched the video a third time. My hands were steady. My face felt numb.

Then I saved the file to my phone, my cloud, and a thumb drive I pulled from my desk drawer. I set the phone face-down on the nightstand and folded my hands in my lap.

I sat there for eleven minutes. I know because I counted.

Then I stood up, pulled a robe over my nightgown, and walked downstairs.

My father's study was at the end of the east wing. The light was still on. He never slept before midnight. I knocked once and opened the door.

Phoenix Carter looked up from a stack of acquisition documents, reading glasses perched on his nose. He was still in his shirt and slacks from dinner. He frowned when he saw me.

"Aliana. It's late."

"I know."

I crossed the room and set my phone on his desk. I didn't say anything. I just pressed play.

He looked at the screen. His expression didn't change for the first few seconds. Then something moved behind his eyes. Something dark and controlled and terrible. He watched the entire video in silence. When it ended, he removed his glasses and set them down very carefully.

"When did you receive this?"

"Twenty minutes ago."

"Do you know who sent it?"

"No. It doesn't matter."

He looked at me. I looked back. My throat felt tight, but my voice came out steady.

"The alliance won't be cancelled," I said. "It will be redirected."

His eyes narrowed. "Redirected."

"Not to the nephew," I said. "To the uncle."

He went very still.

"Everest Griffin," I continued. "The Carter-Griffin partnership stays intact. The wedding goes forward. Just with a different groom."

Phoenix leaned back in his chair. He studied me for a long moment. I didn't look away.

"You're sure," he said quietly.

"I'm sure."

He picked up his phone. He dialed a number from memory. It rang twice.

"Everest," my father said. "We need to talk."

The next morning, Rylan showed up at 10 a.m.

I was in the drawing room when the housekeeper announced him. I didn't stand. I just nodded.

He walked in with Lola on his arm. She was wearing a cream dress and a nervous smile. Rylan looked confident. Relaxed. He thought he was here to smooth things over. He thought I'd seen something, gotten upset, and needed to be managed.

He was wrong.

"Aliana," he started. "I know you're probably—"

"Sit down," I said.

He blinked. "What?"

"Sit. Down."

He sat. Lola sat beside him, hands folded in her lap. She wouldn't look at me.

I picked up the remote and turned on the wall screen. The video filled the frame. No sound. Just the two of them in the hallway, pulling at each other, stumbling into the bridal suite.

Rylan's face went white.

I let it play to the end. Then I turned off the screen and looked at him.

"The engagement is terminated," I said. "Effective immediately."

"Aliana, wait—"

"The Carter-Griffin alliance will proceed as planned. Just not with you."

His mouth opened. Nothing came out.

I turned to Lola. She flinched.

"Thank you," I said quietly. "You just saved me from the worst mistake of my life."

I pressed the call button. Security appeared in the doorway.

"Please escort them out," I said.

Rylan stood up, face red. "You can't do this—"

"I already did."

Security stepped forward. Rylan looked at me like I'd slapped him. Then he turned and walked out, Lola trailing behind him.

The door closed.

I sat alone in the silence and pressed my thumb against the inside of my wrist until the pressure steadied me.

That evening, my father found me in the library.

"It's done," he said. "Everest agreed."

I looked up from the book I wasn't reading. "Just like that?"

"He asked for one meeting. This afternoon. I brought him here."

"And?"

"He asked you one question. 'You're doing this because you want to, not because you were told to?'"

I remembered. I'd answered without hesitation. Yes.

Phoenix nodded. "He said yes."

I sat very still. The most powerful man in Manhattan had simply said yes.

I didn't know what that meant.

But I was about to find out.
