Chapter 3

The penthouse suite was quiet.

Not the uncomfortable kind of quiet. Just still. The city stretched out below us through floor-to-ceiling windows. Manhattan at night looked like a circuit board. All light and geometry.

I stood by the window, still in my wedding dress. I hadn't taken off the veil yet. My reflection looked back at me. Mrs. Griffin.

I heard Everest behind me. The sound of a briefcase opening. Papers being arranged on the table.

"Aliana."

I turned.

He'd removed his jacket. Loosened his tie. He stood at the dining table with a stack of documents in front of him. His expression was unreadable.

"Come here," he said.

I crossed the room. My heels clicked on the marble.

He gestured to the papers. "Property deeds. The Fifth Avenue residence. The Hamptons estate. The Aspen lodge. All transferred to your name as of this afternoon."

I stared at him. "What?"

"Account access credentials." He slid another folder toward me. "Personal accounts. Corporate holdings. Investment portfolios. You'll receive the passwords tomorrow."

"Everest—"

"This marriage operates on your terms," he said. His voice was quiet. Controlled. "You're not a dependent. You're not an accessory. You're my wife. That means equal standing. Legally. Financially. Publicly."

I looked down at the documents. Billions of dollars. Properties I'd only seen in magazines. My name on every line.

"Why?" I asked.

"Because you walked into this with your eyes open," he said. "Because you made a choice under pressure and didn't collapse. Because I don't enter partnerships with unequal stakes."

I pressed my thumb against my wrist. He noticed. His eyes tracked the movement.

"You do that when you're managing something," he said.

I dropped my hand. "I'm fine."

"I know."

He started gathering the papers. Putting them back in the briefcase. Like this was just another transaction. Another negotiation.

I watched him move. Precise. Efficient. Controlled.

Then he turned toward the door.

Something in my chest tightened.

"Stay," I said.

He stopped. Didn't turn around.

"This is your suite too," I added. My voice came out steadier than I felt. "You don't have to leave."

Silence.

Then he turned. Slowly.

His eyes met mine. That stillness again. The kind that wasn't absence. The kind that was something else entirely.

"Are you sure?" he asked.

I nodded.

He crossed the room in three steps.

His hand came up to my face. Thumb against my jaw. The same way he'd done at the altar. But this time he didn't pull away.

"Tell me if you want me to stop," he said quietly.

I didn't answer. I just reached up and pulled the veil from my hair.

His control cracked.

What happened next wasn't tentative. Wasn't careful. His mouth was on mine, his hands in my hair, and I was pulling at his shirt, his tie, anything I could reach. We didn't make it to the bedroom. The couch. The wall. The floor.

Every rumor about Everest Griffin's celibacy shattered in the space of an hour.

He was deliberate. Consuming. Overwhelming.

And I met him with the same intensity.

Afterward, we lay on the floor in the dark. My dress was half-off. His shirt was somewhere across the room. I could hear his breathing. Slow. Controlled again.

But his hand was still on my waist.

I stared at the ceiling. My heart was pounding.

This was supposed to be strategic.

It wasn't.

"Aliana," he said quietly.

"Yeah?"

"This changes things."

I turned my head. Looked at him. His face was unreadable in the shadows.

"I know," I said.

He didn't say anything else. Just pulled me closer.

I closed my eyes and tried not to think about what I'd just started.

Three days later, the rumors began.

I was in a strategy meeting for the Carter-Griffin clean energy project when my assistant slipped me her phone. A tabloid headline.

*The Monk's Marriage: All Business, No Pleasure*

I scrolled through the article. Anonymous sources. Society insiders. All saying the same thing.

Everest Griffin was impotent. The marriage was a corporate arrangement. I'd traded passion for power.

I set the phone down. My face felt hot.

Across the table, my father was watching me. I shook my head slightly. Not here.

The meeting continued. I took notes. Smiled at the right moments. Spoke when spoken to.

Inside, I was calculating.

Rylan.

This had his fingerprints all over it.

That night, I attended the Vanderholm charity gala. Everest was in London on business. I went alone.

Lola was there.

She wore a soft pink dress and had a bandage wrapped around her left wrist. She stood near the bar, surrounded by sympathetic older women. I heard her voice from across the room.

"I don't want to make a big deal out of it," she was saying. Her tone was trembling. Fragile. "I just… I never thought she'd actually hurt me."

One of the women gasped. "Aliana did that?"

"I don't want to talk about it," Lola whispered. "Please."

I stood by the entrance and watched.

She glanced up. Saw me. Her eyes widened. She took a small step back, like she was afraid.

The women around her turned. Stared at me.

I smiled. Polite. Distant.

Then I walked to the bar and ordered a drink.

Two tabloids ran the story by morning.

*The Billionaire's Bride — or the Bully?*

I sat in the penthouse and read every word.

Then I opened my laptop and started making calls.

Rylan wanted a war.

He was going to get one.
