Chapter 1

The rash on the side of my neck burned like a persistent sting.

I pressed my thumb against it, feeling the rough, inflamed skin. It was the mark left by the moonstone pendant Quinton had given me for our anniversary. He had sworn it was an heirloom from his family’s fledgling Duskfall Pack. In reality, it was cheap silver-plated nickel that ate into werewolf flesh.

I had worn it anyway. For six months, I let it burn.

My phone screen lit up on the thin mattress of my bare Omega quarters. It was an encrypted pop-up from the Lycan Royal Council:

*Fourteen hours, twelve minutes remaining. Countdown expires at midnight.*

My grandfather, King Marcus West, was dying. Three years ago, he had stripped me of my crown and commanded me to survive at the very bottom of the pack hierarchy. He wanted me to know the wolves I would rule before I took the throne. I had obeyed. I had scrubbed floors, taken beatings, and hidden my royal Lycan aura in the Blackthorn Pack.

And along the way, I had fallen in love with Quinton Hall, my fated mate.

I stood, pulling on the threadbare gray tunic of a Blackthorn Omega. From beneath the loose floorboard, I pulled out a heavy parchment sealed with crimson wax—the Alpha Bloodline Blessing. It was a rare royal decree that could awaken Quinton’s dormant Alpha gene and save his dying pack. I tucked it safely into the inner pocket of my coat.

I slipped out into the cold morning and headed down to the kitchens.

The main hall was still quiet before the morning rush. Behind the counter stood Deborah Dixon, an elderly Omega whose hands were always dusted with flour. Seeing me, she didn't say a word. She just slid a bowl of warm porridge across the stainless steel counter, topped with a generous spoonful of brown sugar.

It was the same quiet kindness she had shown me every day for three years.

I sat on the wooden stool and watched her work. Deborah patted her apron pocket, making sure her little tins of healing salve were in their usual order: comfrey for bruising, calendula for burns, yarrow for open cuts.

"You look tired today, Florence," Deborah murmured softly, wiping down the prep table.

"Big night tonight," I said, taking a bite. "The Ironcrest Pack Banquet."

"Be careful around the Nelson boy," Deborah warned, glancing over her shoulder. "Duke Nelson thinks cruelty is a game. Don't catch his eye."

"I won't." I finished the bowl and set it in the wash basin. I wanted to tell her that tomorrow she would never have to scrub another pot. But the trial rules were absolute.

I stepped out of the kitchen without looking back. If I turned around, I knew I would break.

An hour later, Quinton summoned me to the packhouse foyer.

He was already dressed in a sharp charcoal suit that brought out the gray in his eyes. His scent—cedar and fresh rain—still gave my inner wolf a dull, aching tug. But beside him stood Juliette Wood. She was a Beta-blooded she-wolf poured into an emerald silk gown that clung to every curve. Her arm was looped tightly through his.

"There you are," Quinton said, his voice flat. He looked me up and down, his eyes lingering on my faded Omega uniform with clear irritation. "Listen carefully. Tonight is crucial for Duskfall. Alpha Steven Nelson might grant us territorial trade rights."

"I understand," I said quietly.

"You're not coming as my date, Florence," he said, casually touching his jaw—the tell he always had when he felt guilty. "You're coming as Juliette's attendant. You carry her coat, you keep her glass filled, and you stay out of the way."

Juliette leaned into him, wrinkling her small nose with theatrical disgust. "Quinton, babe, must she ride in the same car? That Omega stench of hers is going to cling to my dress. You know how sensitive the Ironcrest elites are to low-ranking wolves."

Quinton didn't defend me. He didn't even look at me. "She can take the supply van. And use the service entrance when you arrive, Florence. Don't embarrass me."

"Understood," I said. My thumb brushed the nickel rash on my neck.

By dusk, the supply van pulled up to Alpha Steven Nelson’s lakeside estate. It was a massive limestone mansion with glittering chandeliers visible through two-story windows. Luxury cars lined the winding driveway.

I walked three paces behind Quinton and Juliette as they approached the front entrance. Juliette laughed at something Quinton whispered, her hand resting possessively on his chest.

Before I could reach the marble steps, a Blackthorn guard stepped in front of me with a sneer. "Staff entrance is around back, Omega."

I didn't argue. I turned toward the gravel path and walked around the estate to the service door.

Inside, the kitchen corridor was hot, loud, and chaotic. I passed a line of Omega servers standing against the wall—their heads bowed, their eyes hollow, their wrists carrying fresh bruises from bad-tempered Gammas. I looked at each of them, cataloguing every bruise and every lowered head.

Then, pushing through the swinging double doors, I stepped into the glittering light of the banquet hall.

Laughter and the clink of champagne glasses filled the air. I slipped into the shadows beside a marble pillar, perfectly silent, perfectly invisible.

I looked down at my watch.

Five hours left until midnight.
