Chapter 2

The marble floor felt cold beneath my thin canvas shoes.

I stood in the shadow of a gilded pillar, carrying Juliette’s spare fur wrap over one arm. Around me, crystal chandeliers threw bright, glittering light across the room. Men in tailored tuxedos and women in satin gowns sipped vintage wine, their laughter ringing like delicate glass. None of them looked at me. To them, an Omega was just a piece of furniture that breathed.

In the center of the hall, Duke Nelson commanded the room.

He stood by a tall marble fireplace, a half-empty champagne flute swinging loosely between his fingers. He was tall, broad-shouldered, and draped in an expensive Italian suit his father’s money had paid for. A tight circle of Ironcrest wolves surrounded him, hanging on his every word.

"It’s about tradition," Duke said, his voice carrying easily over the jazz music. He laughed, loud and theatrical, flashing a row of perfect white teeth. "Every year, we remind the lower ranks why order matters. If you don't break a mutt’s spirit early, they forget their place. Right?"

His sycophants chuckled in unison, nodding like bobbleheads.

I kept my chin down and watched him through my lashes. I noted the cruel curl of his mouth, the flushed arrogance in his cheeks, and the way he casually kicked the foot of a passing Omega waiter just to watch the boy stumble.

*Duke Nelson. Gamma.* I filed the name away in my mind, just as I had filed away every abuse for three long years.

Across the room, Juliette Wood made her move.

She slipped away from the dessert table, gliding toward Duke’s circle like an emerald snake. Her silk dress swished against the polished stone. Within seconds, she was standing at Duke’s elbow, throwing her head back in melodic laughter at a joke he hadn't even finished telling.

She leaned close, murmuring something that made Duke’s chest puff out. Juliette was playing the long game. She didn't just want to be the Luna of a struggling pack like Duskfall; she wanted Ironcrest. She wanted power, and Duke was the fastest ladder in the room.

And Quinton was too blind to see it.

Further down the hall, Quinton stood near the terrace doors, cornering two older Betas from a neighboring pack. He looked sharp in his suit, but his posture reeked of desperation. He talked with his hands, pitching Duskfall’s trading routes and begging for alliances.

The two Betas barely looked at him. They nodded politely, their eyes drifting toward the buffet, clearly waiting for him to shut up.

Even from twenty yards away, his scent drifted through the heavy perfume in the air.

*Cedar and fresh rain.*

My chest tightened. A dull, sickening pull tugged at my ribs. My wolf stirred in the deep, quiet corners of my mind, whining softly at the familiar smell of our mate. It was an instinct carved into our very bones by the Moon Goddess, a sacred thread meant to protect and cherish.

Yet every time I looked at him, that sacred thread felt more like a noose.

"Alright, listen up!" Duke’s booming voice suddenly cut through the music.

The crowd hushed. Duke stepped into the cleared circle on the Persian rug, his grin widening with wicked delight.

"Before dinner is served, we kick off the first dare of the night," Duke announced, scanning the faces around him. "A little warm-up test of loyalty. And tonight, I think we start with our lovely guest."

His hand reached out, his fingers catching Juliette’s bare wrist.

"Juliette Wood," Duke drawled, pulling her toward the center. "Let's see if that pretty Beta blood comes with any real spine."

Juliette’s practiced smile instantly froze. The color drained from her cheeks, leaving her pale beneath her heavy makeup. Whatever cruel prank Duke had cooked up for his opening act, she knew it wasn't going to be flattering. She opened her mouth, her eyes darting frantically around the room, desperate for an excuse to escape without offending the Alpha’s son.

Before she could speak, footsteps hurried past me.

Quinton abandoned his conversation and rushed into the circle. He didn't come to challenge Duke. He didn't bare his teeth to protect a packmate. Instead, he flashed a humble, placating smile, bowing his head slightly in Duke’s direction.

"Gamma Duke," Quinton said smoothly, his voice dripping with easy charm. "Juliette's gown was tailored specifically for tonight's formal banquet. It would be a tragedy to ruin it before the Alpha even speaks."

Duke’s brows drew together, his eyes narrowing with dangerous irritation. "Are you telling me no, Quinton?"

"Never," Quinton replied without missing a beat.

He turned on his heel. His gaze swept the edges of the ballroom until it locked onto me.

Before I could move, Quinton crossed the distance in two strides. His fingers clamped down on my upper arm like an iron vice. The grip was tight enough to bruise, pinching the delicate skin beneath my faded cotton sleeve. He dragged me out of the shadows and yanked me directly into the center of the glittering circle.

He shoved me forward, right in front of Duke.

"My Omega is happy to serve the circle," Quinton declared loudly, smiling at Duke as if he were offering up a dog. "Take her instead."

He didn't look down at me. Not once.

I stared at his hand on my arm. Then I lifted my head, looking straight into the face of my fated mate.

There was no hesitation in his gray eyes. No guilt. No shame. Just the cold, clean reflex of a coward throwing someone else into the fire to keep his own hands clean.
