My Boyfriend Faked Paralysis While I Worked Three Jobs Chapter 1

The Brooklyn studio smelled like bleach and damp plaster. It was barely four hundred square feet. On a gray Tuesday afternoon, I was down on my hands and knees, scrubbing grease off the linoleum floor.

Near the foggy window, Soren Harvey slept in his wheelchair. A faded wool blanket covered his legs.

For seven years, that blanket was my world. He had pushed me away from a speeding cab when we were twenty-one. The car hit him instead. His spine shattered. Or so he told me. Guilt made me walk away from my family, my real last name, and the billion-dollar company my mother built. I became nobody. I worked double shifts at a diner, drove strangers around at two in the morning, and saved every dime for his surgery.

I stood up to wipe the counter. To get the dust behind his laptop, I nudged the machine aside. The screen woke up instantly. A video was paused on the desktop, inside a folder named *Insurance Docs*.

Curious, I hit the spacebar.

The video started playing. My chest seized.

Soren was on the screen. He wasn't in a wheelchair. He was standing tall, pacing across a sunny living room in sweatpants. He was laughing, holding a beer.

Beside him stood a gorgeous woman with glossy hair and sharp red lips. Demi Cole.

On the video, Soren mocked me. He slouched, dragged his feet, and made a whiny face. *"Soren, drink your soup. Soren, let me rub your legs."*

Demi threw her head back, laughing hard. "Seven years," she purred. "She never caught on."

Soren took a swig of beer. "She thinks she owes me her life. Plain little thing works three jobs so I don't have to lift a finger."

"And the bet?" Demi smiled.

"You lost the moment she moved into this shithole with me," Soren sneered.

The video looped.

I didn't scream. I didn't drop the sponge. The air in my lungs turned into broken glass. I watched the clip a second time. Then a third.

Every late shift. Every dollar counted at the grocery register. The way my knees ached when I carried his laundry up three flights of stairs. All of it had been a joke between two people who thought I was an idiot.

I quietly clicked the screen shut. I knelt back down on the cold floor and finished wiping the baseboard.

Behind me, the wheels creaked. Soren groaned and rubbed his eyes.

"Kei?" he muttered, his voice weak and raspy. The helpless voice he put on for me. "What time is it? What’s for dinner?"

I wrung out the sponge into the bucket. My hands didn't shake.

"Six o'clock," I said. My voice was level. "Chicken and rice."

He smiled, satisfied, and pulled the blanket tighter over his knees. "Good girl. My legs are aching today. It's the rain."

I looked at him. Something in me went cold and still. "I'm sure it is."

Over the next three days, the blindfold came off. I saw everything I had spent seven years ignoring.

When I brought him his coffee, I looked at his hands. He had thick, rough calluses across his palms. Wheelchair rims didn't leave marks like that. Barbells did.

When he watched television and thought I was in the bathroom, I watched through the cracked door. His calves flexed beneath the blanket. He shifted his weight smoothly, using muscles that were supposed to be dead.

On Thursday morning, I emptied the pockets of his heavy winter coat to do the wash. Tucked deep in the lining was a paper receipt. A day pass for a private gym in DUMBO, dated two days ago.

I pulled a small black notebook from my apron. It was the pad I had used since my waitressing days to track tips and hours. With a steady hand, I wrote down the date, the gym name, and the timestamps from the video.

That evening, Soren didn't wait for dinner. He looked up from his phone, his face casual.

"A friend is crashing here for a few days," he said. "Demi. Her place had a water leak."

He didn't ask. He announced it.

Ten minutes later, the door swung open. Demi stood in the narrow hallway. She wore a tailored camel coat and trailed two monogrammed suitcases behind her. Her expensive perfume instantly smothered the smell of my bleach.

"Soren," she purred.

She walked straight past me, leaned down, and ran her long fingers through his hair. Soren tilted his head into her hand, grinning like a spoiled cat.

"Keilani, right?" Demi looked at me over her shoulder. Her eyes swept over my oversized thrift-store sweater and rough hands. "Cute place. Very cozy."

"There's only one bed," I said quietly.

"Yeah, about that," Soren said. He reached down to the floor, picked up a thin, scratchy gray blanket, and tossed it into my arms. "Demi's got a bad hip, and you know my spine can't handle hard surfaces. You don't mind the kitchen floor for a bit, do you?"

"Take the rug by the sink," Demi added with a tiny, pitying smile. "It's softer."

They didn't wait for my answer. Demi kicked off her heels and crawled onto the queen mattress in the corner. Soren wheeled himself over, hoisted his upper body up, and slid beneath the sheets beside her.

Midnight came. The apartment was pitch-black.

I lay flat on the hard linoleum floor by the humming mini-fridge. The cold seeped through the thin wool, straight into my bones.

Behind the flimsy privacy curtain, the bed springs squeaked. Soft, muffled giggles drifted through the dark, followed by low whispers.

I stared at the ceiling cracks.

For seven years, I thought I was paying a blood debt. I thought I had ruined a good man's life.

*I don't owe him anything,* I thought. *I never did.*

I clicked my pen in the dark. I opened my notebook to a fresh, clean page.

In neat, precise letters, I wrote two words:

*Not yet.*
