Chapter 2

I woke up to voices downstairs. Low. Serious. The kind of conversation that doesn't happen at six in the morning unless something's already been decided.

I pulled on a sweater and went down. My parents and Benedict sat at the kitchen table. Three coffee cups. A yellow legal pad covered in my brother's neat handwriting. They looked up when I walked in.

"We're resigning," my father said. No preamble. Just fact.

I stopped in the doorway. "What?"

"All three of us." My mother's voice was calm. Final. "We've already decided."

Benedict tapped his pen against the legal pad. "I'm drafting the letters now. We'll submit Monday morning. Synchronized."

I crossed to the table. Looked at the pad. It was covered in contractual language, access protocols, handover procedures. "You don't have to do this," I said. My voice came out smaller than I wanted. "Those are your jobs. Your careers. You built—"

"We built his company," my father interrupted. His tone wasn't angry. Just clear. "And we're taking ourselves out of it. Cleanly. Legally. Completely."

"He doesn't get to keep what we gave him," Benedict added. His jaw was tight. "Not after what he did to you."

I sat down. My hands were shaking. "This is too much. I don't want you to sacrifice—"

"It's not a sacrifice." My mother reached across the table and covered my hand with hers. "It's a choice. And we've made it."

I looked at each of them. My father's face was set like stone. My mother's eyes were steady. Benedict's pen was still in his hand, ready to keep writing.

They weren't asking my permission. They were telling me they'd already chosen.

"Okay," I whispered.

Benedict nodded and went back to his legal pad. "I'll have everything ready by Sunday night."

The weekend passed in a strange, quiet blur. Benedict worked in the study with his laptop and three different contract binders. My mother organized files. My father made calls to his own lawyer. I stayed out of the way, mostly. Sat in the kitchen. Drank tea I didn't finish.

Sunday night, Benedict printed three letters. He laid them on the table side by side. Perfect. Identical. Devastating.

"Every access point severed," he said. "Every proprietary protocol documented and handed over. No legal exposure. But also no safety net. The second we walk out, the gaps will show."

My father picked up his letter. Read it once. Signed it. My mother did the same. Benedict signed last.

They didn't look sad. They looked certain.

Monday morning, I didn't go with them. I stayed home. Sat at the kitchen table and waited.

My phone buzzed once. A text from Benedict. One word: *Done.*

Then nothing.

They came home just after noon. My father walked in first. He set his briefcase by the door—the same briefcase he'd carried for fifteen years—and looked at me.

"It's finished," he said.

My mother came in behind him. She looked lighter somehow. Tired, but lighter. She hung up her coat and put the kettle on like it was any other day.

Benedict was last. He dropped into the chair across from me and exhaled. "He took it well," he said. His voice was dry. "By which I mean he barely blinked. Told us we were making a mistake. That fresh blood was exactly what the company needed."

"He actually said that?" I asked.

Benedict nodded. "Word for word. Then he thanked us for our service and walked out."

My mother set tea in front of me. "He has no idea what he just lost."

"He will," my father said quietly. He wasn't gloating. Just stating fact. "Give it a week."

I wrapped my hands around the mug. The warmth helped. "What happens now?"

"Now we wait," my mother said. She sat down beside me. "And we let him figure it out on his own."

The news came faster than even my father predicted. By Wednesday, Benedict's phone lit up with messages from former colleagues still inside the company. Kaden had already made his move. Ariella's brother Derek was the new CTO. Her cousin was handling financial operations.

Benedict read the messages aloud at dinner. His voice was flat. "Derek Fox. Marketing background. No engineering experience. Never managed a technical team in his life."

"And the cousin?" my mother asked.

"Finance degree from a school I've never heard of. Worked at his family's real estate firm for three years. That's it."

My father set down his fork. "He's replacing us with people who have no idea what they're doing."

"He thinks he's the genius," Benedict said. "He thinks the company runs on his vision. He doesn't understand that we were the foundation. That without us, the whole thing is standing on air."

I looked at my brother. "How long before it collapses?"

Benedict leaned back in his chair. His expression was cold. Satisfied. "Not long."

That night, I lay in bed and stared at the ceiling. I thought about Kaden in his office, confident and smiling, convinced he'd upgraded. I thought about Ariella, her hand on her belly, believing she'd won.

They had no idea what was coming.

And for the first time since the gala, I felt something other than grief.

I felt ready.
