Chapter 3

The first article appeared on a tech blog I'd never heard of. Someone sent me the link. I didn't recognize the number.

The headline was careful. Professional. "Sources Close to Carr Enterprises Reveal Troubled Relationship Behind IPO Drama."

I read it standing in the kitchen. My coffee went cold in my hand.

The article didn't name me directly. It didn't have to. Every detail was specific enough. The "long-term partner" who had become "increasingly possessive" as Kaden's success grew. The "concerning behavior" that included monitoring his schedule and isolating him from old friends. The "credible reports" of her own infidelity that Kaden had overlooked out of loyalty until he simply couldn't anymore.

I set my phone down. My hands were steady. That surprised me.

Benedict walked in, already reading his own screen. He looked up. "You saw it."

"I saw it."

"It's bullshit," he said. His voice was flat. Controlled. "Every word."

"I know."

"We can fight this. I can trace the source. We can—"

"No." I picked up my coffee. Poured it down the sink. "Let him talk."

Benedict stared at me. "Ashlyn."

"I mean it." I turned around. Looked at my brother. "Let him say whatever he needs to say. Let him build whatever story makes him feel better."

"People will believe him."

"Some will," I said. "For now."

The second article came two days later. A gossip column with more reach. This one had quotes from "friends of the couple" describing my "volatile reactions" to Kaden's professional success. How I'd "struggled with his growing profile." How Ariella had been a "source of genuine emotional support" during a "difficult period in his personal life."

My phone started going quiet after that. A lunch invitation canceled. A group chat I was suddenly removed from. Naomi's texts stopped coming.

I sat at the kitchen table and watched it happen. Watched my social circle contract like something dying. My thumb pressed into my finger until the nail left a mark.

My mother found me there. She didn't ask what I was reading. She just sat down across from me and waited.

"He's erasing me," I said finally. My voice sounded far away. "He's rewriting the whole story so I'm the villain. So he's the victim."

"Yes," my mother said. "He is."

"People are believing it."

"Some are."

I looked up at her. "Doesn't that bother you?"

"No," she said simply. "Because the truth doesn't change just because someone tells a better lie. And eventually, the truth always comes out. It just takes patience."

I wanted to believe her. I wasn't sure I did.

The envelope arrived on a Thursday. Cream-colored. Heavy stock. My name written in calligraphy across the front.

I opened it at the kitchen table. My father was reading the paper. My mother was making eggs. Benedict was on his laptop in the corner. Normal morning. Regular sounds.

The invitation slid out first. Gold embossing. Elegant script.

*Mr. Kaden Carr and Ms. Ariella Fox request the honor of your presence at their engagement celebration. The Plaza Hotel. Saturday evening. Black tie.*

I stared at it. My brain couldn't make sense of what I was seeing. Why would she—

Then I saw the photographs.

Four of them. Glossy. Professional quality. Kaden and Ariella together. His hand on her waist. Her head on his shoulder. Laughing in what looked like a restaurant I recognized. A date stamp in the corner. March.

Two months before the IPO.

I set them down carefully. My hands were shaking now. My mother had gone still at the stove. My father lowered his newspaper. Benedict looked up from his screen.

None of them said anything. They just waited.

I picked up one of the photographs. Studied it. Kaden's smile. Ariella's hand resting on his chest. The easy intimacy of people who'd been together for a while. Not weeks. Months.

The whole time. The whole time I'd been planning our future, he'd been with her.

I set the photo down. Picked up the invitation again. Read it once more.

*Request the honor of your presence.*

She wanted me there. She wanted me to see them celebrate. Wanted me to sit in that ballroom and watch them dance and know that I'd lost.

My thumb found my finger. Pressed hard.

Then something shifted. Something cold and clear settled in my chest where the grief had been living.

I looked at the photographs again. Not at Kaden. At the backgrounds. The details. The little things Ariella hadn't thought about when she'd chosen which photos to send.

I saw the restaurant. The timestamp. The angle. The way Kaden's jacket hung on the chair behind him—the same jacket he'd told me he'd worn to a late investor meeting that night in March.

Evidence. She'd sent me evidence. And she had no idea.

I gathered the photos. Slid them back into the envelope with the invitation. Stood up.

"Where are you going?" my mother asked.

I looked at her. At my father. At Benedict. All of them watching me with careful, worried eyes.

"To find something to wear," I said. "I have a party to attend."
