Chapter 3

Paige returned on the third morning.

I was still in the cold-storage cellar when the whispers started filtering through the pack house above me. I could hear them through the ventilation grate—muffled voices, footsteps running, someone shouting for the Alpha.

My wolf lifted her head inside me, ears pricked.

I pressed my palm against the concrete wall and listened.

The door opened two hours later. Not Grayson. Marcus again, his face drawn tight with something that looked like pity.

"Alpha wants you upstairs," he said quietly. "Now."

I followed him up through the kitchens. The staff went silent as I passed. Daya stood by the industrial sink, her hands frozen mid-rinse, her eyes tracking me with an expression I couldn't read.

The pack house common room was full.

Grayson stood at the center, his Alpha presence filling the space like pressure before a storm. Paige sat in the leather armchair beside him, wrapped in a blanket despite the warmth of the room. Her face was turned toward the assembled pack members—Betas, Gammas, senior Deltas, all watching with the focused attention of wolves who sensed blood in the water.

I stopped three feet inside the doorway.

Paige's face was ruined.

Silver burns traced across her left cheek in deliberate, savage lines—four parallel marks that looked like claw strikes, the skin blistered and weeping. More burns circled her throat, careful and precise. Her right eye was swollen nearly shut. She trembled as she looked at me, her hands clutching the blanket, her breath coming in short, performative gasps.

"She did this," Paige whispered, her voice breaking on the words. "She kidnapped me. Two days. She kept me in some abandoned building, chained me with silver, and—" Her voice dissolved into a sob that sounded almost real.

Grayson's eyes found mine. Cold. Absolute.

"Aviana," he said, and his Alpha tone made the air vibrate. "Explain."

I looked at Paige. At the burns positioned exactly where they would be most visible. At the way her hands shook just enough to draw attention but not enough to dislodge the blanket. At the single tear that tracked down her undamaged cheek with the precision of something rehearsed.

I said nothing.

"Security footage from two nights ago shows you leaving the pack house at midnight," Grayson continued. His voice was flat, factual, the voice of an Alpha delivering judgment. "Paige disappeared the same night. She was found this morning by a patrol near the eastern border, barely conscious. She identified you as her attacker."

I felt my wolf stir inside me, not with rage but with something colder. She was watching. Waiting. Learning the exact shape of the trap before we moved.

"Do you deny it?" Grayson asked.

I met his eyes and felt the bond between us pull taut—that hollow, fraying thread that had once carried his heartbeat directly into my chest. Now it carried nothing but the weight of what he was about to do.

"I deny it," I said quietly.

Paige made a sound—half gasp, half sob. "She's lying! She said—she told me she would make me pay for Muffin, that I didn't deserve to be Luna, that—" Her voice broke again, perfectly timed.

Grayson's jaw tightened. "Enough."

The room went silent.

He looked at me for a long moment, and I watched him choose. Watched him weigh my word against Paige's tears, my five years of service against her visible suffering, the incomplete bond he had never honored against the Luna title he had already given her.

I watched him choose her.

"You're confined to the conservatory," he said. "Under guard. Until the council convenes."

Not the cellar this time. The conservatory—the glass-walled room on the east side of the pack house where unmated she-wolves sometimes took their morning tea. Visible. Exposed. A different kind of cage.

I turned to go.

"Wait."

Grayson's voice stopped me. I looked back.

His expression had shifted into something harder, something that made my wolf go very still.

"Paige requires treatment," he said slowly. "The healer says the silver burns are severe. They'll scar without intervention."

I said nothing.

"Your blood," Grayson continued, and the words landed in the room like stones dropped in still water, "has unique regenerative properties. The healer identified it years ago during your injury treatments. It heals faster, stronger. Paige needs it."

I stared at him.

"You're ordering me," I said quietly, "to give my blood to the woman accusing me of torturing her."

"I'm ordering you," Grayson said, and his Alpha tone threaded through the words like wire, "to provide what the pack's Luna needs to heal."

My wolf snarled inside me, a sound that didn't reach my throat.

I looked at Paige. At her swollen eye, her trembling hands, her burns positioned with such careful precision. At the small, secret curve of her mouth that appeared for just a second before she buried her face in the blanket.

She had planned this. All of it.

And Grayson was handing her exactly what she wanted.

"When?" I asked.

Grayson's expression didn't change. "Now."

Vance entered from the side door, carrying a medical kit. His face was professionally neutral, the face of a healer who had learned not to question Alpha commands. He set the kit on the side table and opened it with efficient, practiced movements.

Grayson stepped toward me. The bond between us pulled tight, and I felt it—the Alpha tone building in his chest, preparing to travel through the thread that connected us.

"Don't move," he said, and the command hit me like a physical force.

My body locked.

Every muscle froze. My spine went rigid. My hands stopped mid-clench at my sides. I couldn't blink. Couldn't turn my head. Couldn't close my eyes.

The Alpha tone through an incomplete bond was supposed to be impossible—the command shouldn't travel without a full mark. But we had been connected for five years, close enough for him to feel my heartbeat, close enough for the bond to carry his will into my body and pin me like a butterfly to a board.

Vance approached with the surgical blade.

I tried to speak. My jaw wouldn't move. The command held me frozen, a statue made of flesh and fury.

Paige stood. Walked over. Stopped three feet away, her blanket slipping from her shoulders, her burns catching the light.

She smiled.

Not the trembling, tearful smile she'd shown the pack. A different smile. Private. Satisfied.

"This won't hurt," she whispered, just loud enough for me to hear. "Much."

Vance pressed the blade to my left forearm.

No sedation. No warning.

The steel bit into my skin and I screamed—or tried to. The sound traveled up my throat, hit my frozen jaw, and died there. It poured through the bond instead, a howl of agony that shot directly into Grayson's awareness.

He flinched.

Then he muted it.

I felt the bond go quiet, felt him sever the thread that carried my pain into his chest, felt him lock the door between us so he wouldn't have to hear what was being done in his name.

The blade drew downward.

My blood welled dark and rich into the collection vial Vance held beneath my arm. Ancient blood. Lycan-line blood. The blood that had made me valuable in ways I had never understood.

Vance worked quickly, efficiently, filling three vials while my arm hung frozen at my side and my eyes stayed open, unblinking, locked on Grayson's face across the room.

He wasn't looking at me.

He was looking at the wall behind me, his jaw set, his hands clenched at his sides, his entire body radiating the rigid control of a man who had decided not to see what was happening three feet in front of him.

The blade lifted.

Vance sealed the vials and stepped back.

Grayson released the command.

My body unlocked all at once. I staggered, caught myself against the doorframe, my arm streaming blood onto the polished floor.

No one moved to help me.

I straightened slowly. Pressed my hand over the wound. Looked at Grayson one last time.

He met my eyes.

And I saw it—the moment he recognized what he had just done. The moment the reality of the blade, the blood, the muted screams traveling through a bond he had silenced, landed in his awareness and refused to be ignored.

His face went white.

I turned. Walked out of the common room. Climbed the stairs to the conservatory with blood dripping from my arm and my wolf howling inside me—not with pain, but with the cold, absolute certainty of a creature that had just identified the exact moment to strike.

Two days left.

I could do two days.
