My Alpha Thought I Died With His Child Summary
The mate bond didn't snap cleanly—it unraveled strand by strand, leaving a hollow ache behind. Chained to a cellar wall with silver cuffs biting into her wrists and ribs cracked by a rogue's boot, her wolf gave up healing. He felt the bond break and believed she died with their child. But she survived, breathing shallow through the wolfsbane haze, waiting to prove him wrong.

My Alpha Thought I Died With His Child Chapter 1

The bond broke at hour forty-seven.

Not cleanly. Not all at once. It frayed like a rope under too much weight, strand by strand, until what remained was so thin I could feel the empty space around it more than the thread itself.

I was still chained to the cellar wall when it happened.

Silver cuffs bit into my wrists. The burns had stopped bleeding around hour thirty, once my wolf gave up trying to heal through the metal. Two ribs on my left side were cracked—I'd felt them snap under a rogue's boot during the initial capture, heard the wet pop before the pain arrived. Every breath since had been shallow, measured, the kind of breathing you do when your body is trying not to make things worse.

The cellar smelled like old blood and wolfsbane. Someone had lined the walls with it years ago, dried bundles hanging from hooks that cast thin shadows in the single bulb's light. My wolf had gone quiet after the first twelve hours. Not silent—I could still feel her, a low ember of rage somewhere behind my ribs—but she'd stopped throwing herself against the bond, stopped howling for him through the tether.

She'd learned faster than I had.

I sent my location through the bond for the fourth time at hour forty-two. The pack house was seventeen miles northeast. I could feel the direction like a compass needle in my chest, the way I'd always been able to feel him. The bond worked like that—distance meant nothing when the thread was intact. I pushed the cellar's coordinates through the tether, let them sit in his awareness like a stone dropped in still water.

I waited.

His pulse came back steady. Unhurried. Nowhere near me.

Then his voice, distant and distracted, barely more than a brush of thought: *I'm coming.*

I counted my breaths. Counted the space between his heartbeat and mine. Counted the hours.

No footsteps.

No rescue.

At hour forty-eight, the cellar door rattled. Not rogues—I knew their footsteps by then, heavy and uneven. This was the clean, synchronized rhythm of a patrol unit. Shadowridge wolves. The lock mechanism groaned. Light spilled down the stairs, too bright after two days of a single bulb.

"Luna's mercy," someone breathed. Not my title. Never my title.

I didn't move. My wrists were still cuffed to the wall, my spine pressed against cold stone, my legs folded beneath me in a position I'd stopped feeling six hours ago. I looked at the patrol—four wolves, all Delta rank, all staring at me like I was something they'd found in a grave.

I was upright. I was conscious. I was silent.

That was what frightened them.

"Aviana." The lead Delta—Marcus, I remembered his name—dropped to a crouch three feet from me, his hands raised like I might bolt. "We've been searching since the distress signal went out. Can you—"

"Unlock the cuffs," I said. My voice came out hoarse but even. No tremor. No plea.

Marcus fumbled with the key. The silver released with a click that echoed too loud in the small space. I pulled my wrists forward slowly, let the burns catch the light. The skin was blistered in perfect circles where the metal had rested, raw and seeping. My wolf stirred, tested the absence of silver, and went still again.

"We need to get you to the healer," Marcus said. "Alpha Grayson—"

"Where is he."

Not a question. Marcus's eyes flicked to the other Deltas. One of them, a younger wolf whose name I didn't know, shifted his weight.

"He's at the pack house," Marcus said carefully. "He's been—there was an emergency with Luna Paige. Her fox kit went missing, and she—"

The bond thread went cold in my chest.

Not broken. Colder.

"He spent forty-eight hours," I said slowly, "searching for a fox kit."

Marcus didn't answer. He didn't need to. I could see it in the way his jaw tightened, the way the other Deltas wouldn't meet my eyes. They knew. They all knew.

I pushed myself upright. My ribs screamed. I ignored them. I walked past Marcus, past the patrol, up the cellar stairs into air that smelled like pine and rain and freedom I hadn't earned yet.

The bond was still there. Still intact. I could feel Grayson's heartbeat, steady and unconcerned, seventeen miles away.

My wolf spoke for the first time in two days, her voice low and certain:

*He didn't come.*

I knew.

"Take me to the pack house," I told Marcus.

He hesitated. "You need medical—"

"Now."

The drive back was twenty minutes. I spent it staring out the window, watching Shadowridge territory roll past in the early morning light. The burns on my wrists had started to crust over. My ribs shifted with every breath. Inside the bond, I felt Grayson's presence like a distant star—there, observable, irrelevant.

When we pulled up to the pack house, I saw him on the front steps.

He was holding Paige's hand.

She was crying—delicate, photogenic tears that caught the light just right. Her fox kit, Muffin, was tucked under her other arm, perfectly unharmed, its white fur gleaming.

Grayson looked up as the patrol vehicle stopped. His eyes found mine through the windshield.

I watched his expression shift—surprise, then relief, then something that looked almost like annoyance at the interruption.

I opened the door. Stepped out. Walked toward him with my burned wrists hanging at my sides and my cracked ribs grinding with every step.

Paige's tears stopped. She watched me approach with eyes that were perfectly dry underneath.

I stopped three feet from Grayson and asked one question, my voice stripped of everything but the need to hear him say it:

"Why didn't you come?"

He didn't apologize. He didn't look at the silver burns. He didn't ask if I was all right.

"The patrol handled it," he said. "You're the pack's best warrior, Aviana. I knew you'd survive."

Paige made a small sound, something between a sob and a sigh. Grayson's hand tightened on hers.

"Paige needed me," he added, and the word—*needed*—landed in my chest like a stone. "Muffin was missing. She was distraught."

I looked at the fox kit. At Paige's dry eyes. At Grayson's hand wrapped around hers.

Inside my chest, my wolf let out a single, low sound that wasn't quite a growl.

I turned. Walked past them. Climbed the pack house steps.

Behind me, Grayson called my name.

I didn't stop.

I reached the door, opened it, stepped inside, and closed it behind me with the careful, final click of someone who has decided never to open it again.
