After My Alpha Marked Another, I Found My Fated Mate

The moonlight streamed through the office windows as I hunched over my desk, finalizing the details for tomorrow's ceremony. Ten years. Ten years of devotion, sacrifice, and love had led to this moment—our official Mating and Luna Ceremony. I traced my fingers over the elaborate invitations I'd designed myself, each one addressed by hand to every member of the Silverfang Pack. "Just a few more hours of work," I whispered to myself, "and then everything will be perfect." My wolf, Luna, stirred weakly inside me. *We deserve this, Hazel. After all we've done for him.* I smiled, though it felt strained. Luna had never been strong—another reminder of my status as a Late Bloomer. But Declan had promised that once we completed our marking ceremony, our wolves would sync and mine would grow stronger. The clock on the wall read 11:42 PM.

"Just a few more hours of work," I whispered to myself, "and then everything will be perfect."

My wolf, Luna, stirred weakly inside me. *We deserve this, Hazel. After all we've done for him.*

I smiled, though it felt strained. Luna had never been strong—another reminder of my status as a Late Bloomer. But Declan had promised that once we completed our marking ceremony, our wolves would sync and mine would grow stronger.

The clock on the wall read 11:42 PM. Declan had texted earlier saying he was handling "pack business" and would meet me later. I'd accepted it without question, as I always did. The Alpha's work never ended, especially with a ceremony approaching.

I reached for another stack of papers when voices drifted through the partially open door to the adjacent room—Declan's private office.

"—never had a proper celebration, Isabel. It's not right." Declan's voice was soft, almost tender in a way I hadn't heard directed at me in years.

"But Alpha, I don't want to cause any trouble," came Isabel's breathy reply. "Especially with the Luna ceremony so close."

I froze, my pen hovering over the paper.

"Nonsense," Declan said firmly. "Your first shift is a major milestone. Every pack member should witness it properly."

My stomach tightened. Isabel had shifted last week—a week after her eighteenth birthday. As an Omega, her late shift wasn't unusual, but as Declan's personal assistant, she'd quickly become... important to him.

"I just feel so special when you look out for me like this," Isabel whispered.

"You're part of our pack now," Declan replied, his tone carrying that protective edge that made my chest ache. "I promised to take care of you."

Luna whined softly inside me. *He used to say that to us.*

I forced myself to focus on my work, but the words blurred before my eyes.

---

The following evening, I stood in the doorway of the main hall, my heart sinking with each passing second.

"What's going on?" I asked Elena, my best friend and the pack's Healer, who stood beside me with wide eyes.

"I... I don't know," she stammered. "There wasn't any announcement about a party tonight."

Before us, the hall was transformed. Streamers hung from the ceiling, music blared from speakers, and pack members crowded every available space. At the center of it all stood Declan, his arm around Isabel's waist as she beamed up at him in her new dress—one I'd never seen before.

"Surprise!" Declan announced, his voice carrying over the crowd. "Tonight, we celebrate Isabel's successful shift and welcome her properly to the Silverfang Pack!"

Applause erupted around us. I remained frozen, my fingers clutching the doorframe.

"Hazel," Elena whispered, "are you okay? You look pale."

I couldn't answer. The room was too full, too loud, too many dominant wolves with their overwhelming auras pressing against my sensitive senses. My chest began to tighten.

"Declan," I called weakly, but my voice was lost in the noise.

He didn't see me. He was too busy presenting Isabel to the pack elders, his hand resting possessively on the small of her back.

The air grew thinner. Black spots danced at the edges of my vision as I tried to breathe through the panic rising in my throat.

"Need... to get out," I gasped.

But there was nowhere to go. Wolves surrounded me on all sides, their scents mingling and suffocating me. I caught a glimpse of Declan laughing, his eyes never once searching for me in the crowd.

My knees buckled.

"Hazel!" Elena's voice sounded distant as darkness crept into my vision.

I collapsed to the floor, my lungs refusing to work properly. Through the haze of my panic attack, I saw Declan's head turn toward the commotion—saw his eyes widen as he noticed me on the ground.

For one desperate moment, I thought he would come for me.

Instead, he turned back to Isabel, who had placed a delicate hand on her chest in mock distress.

"Are you okay?" he asked her, his voice carrying to where I lay. "The crowd startled you?"

"It's just so overwhelming," Isabel whispered back, leaning into him.

I watched through increasingly blurry vision as Declan pulled her closer, murmuring reassurances into her hair while my body shut down from the sensory overload.

Elena's arms wrapped around me as she tried to lift me. "I've got you," she whispered fiercely. "Let's get you somewhere safe."

As she carried me from the room, I caught one last glimpse of Declan—still holding Isabel, still not looking for me—and something inside me finally broke beyond repair.

The Pierre Hotel smelled like gardenias and old money. I stood just inside the ballroom entrance and let the scene wash over me. Crystal chandeliers threw soft light across a hundred faces I didn't recognize and a dozen I did. Women in gowns that cost more than cars. Men in tuxedos that fit like they were born wearing them. Waiters gliding between clusters of conversation with trays of champagne so pale it looked like liquid gold. Six years ago, I would have been one of those waiters. I took a glass from a passing tray and didn't drink it. My steel-gray gown was custom Valentino, fitted so precisely it felt like armor. It cost more than my entire first-year scholarship at Columbia.

Seven years. Seven long years since I'd last set foot in New York City. The skyline stretched before me, a glittering canvas of ambition and betrayal. I stood on the balcony of our Manhattan penthouse, the cool evening air caressing my skin. My fingers absently traced the platinum band on my left hand—a habit I'd developed whenever the past threatened to overwhelm me. "You're thinking about them, aren't you?" I didn't need to turn to know Leonardo had joined me. His presence was like a physical force, powerful and reassuring. The mate bond between us hummed with his concern. "They're just ghosts, Violet," he said, his arms encircling me from behind. His chin rested on my shoulder, his breath warm against my neck.

I tapped my pencil against the edge of my sketchpad, staring at the half-finished design for the ceremonial necklace I planned to surprise Marcus with for our fifth anniversary. The silver and moonstone piece would symbolize our enduring bond—five perfect years as Alpha and Luna of the Silverstone Pack. "What do you think, Lyra?" I whispered to my wolf, who purred contentedly in my mind. *Beautiful, like all your creations, Victoria.* My inner wolf had always been my greatest supporter, even before Marcus. I smiled, setting down my pencil and stretching my arms above my head. The afternoon sun streamed through the windows of our shared study, casting a warm glow over the polished oak desk. Marcus had left his tablet behind this morning in his rush to handle what he'd called an "urgent pack matter." I reached for it, thinking I could review some of the anniversary celebration plans we'd been discussing. We'd granted each other access to our devices years ago—a symbol of trust between mates. The screen lit up at my touch, revealing a messaging app I rarely used. A notification blinked insistently in the corner—from Amber Rodriguez, our new pack coordinator.

I worked three double shifts at the garage just to buy a velvet-boxed cake for my wealthy girlfriend, Arleen. But when I pushed open the VIP room door, I saw her lover kissing her bare leg. She didn't push him away. Instead, she laughed and swirled her martini. "I only forgot Finn because I knew he would stay. He is a poor boy from Queens who follows me around like a loyal dog." Later that night, her lover intentionally crashed a Porsche to scare me, sending a piece of jagged metal into my skull. Lying in a growing pool of my own blood, I watched Arleen crawl out of the wreckage. She didn't even look at me. She threw herself at her uninjured lover, screaming for a medic. "He just got scraped by a piece of plastic. He is faking it. Deal with Jaquez first!" When I woke up, I wasn't free. Arleen had locked me in a private hospital wing with 24-hour security, planning to isolate me and keep me as her broken, captive toy forever. My blind, pathetic devotion finally froze into absolute disgust. I looked at the heart monitor next to my bed and grabbed an IV needle. I severed the sensor wire to trigger a flatline, slipped out the fire stairs while the nurses panicked, and burned my identity to ashes. This time, I was going to disappear to London, build my own empire, and watch hers burn.
