After My Alpha Banished Me, His Pack Collapsed Chapter 1

The bond broke at 10:14 on a Tuesday morning, but I didn't know it yet. I was holding a tray of roasted venison at the time, balancing it on one hip while a pack Omega named Jessa refilled wine glasses beside me. The Ironmaw banquet hall smelled like fire smoke and jasmine—Celine's jasmine, thick enough to coat the back of my throat.

Weston stood at the head table. Celine sat in the Luna's chair.

I had served at three banquets before this one. Each time, Nancy had told me it was temporary. "Just until the pack settles," she'd said, her smile thin as paper. "You understand."

I understood.

Weston raised his hand. The hall quieted. My wolf—small, dull-furred, barely awake most days—stirred uneasily in my chest.

"Ironmaw thrives because we protect our resources," Weston said. His voice carried the Alpha tone easily, a low rumble that made the Deltas straighten in their seats. "Starting tonight, all pack resources require my personal approval. Healer access, border patrol assignments, supply distribution—everything runs through me."

Murmurs rippled through the room. I kept my eyes on the tray. The venison was getting cold.

"This ensures," Weston continued, "that we waste nothing on problems that don't deserve pack attention."

His gaze flicked toward me for half a second. Just long enough.

Celine leaned back in the Luna's chair, her jasmine scent rolling through the hall like a wave. I watched three unmated Deltas turn their heads toward her without seeming to realize they'd done it. She smiled, slow and satisfied.

Weston reached into his jacket. When his hand emerged, it held a small velvet box.

The hall went silent.

He opened the box. Inside, a moonstone pendant caught the firelight, pale and luminous. Celine's breath hitched—a soft, delighted sound that carried.

Weston lifted the pendant from the box and stepped behind her chair. Celine tilted her head, baring her throat. The jasmine scent intensified. Weston draped the chain around her neck, his fingers brushing the nape where a Luna's mark would sit.

The pendant settled just above her collarbone. Celine touched it with one hand, her eyes bright.

"Beautiful," someone murmured.

Nancy, seated in the acting-Luna chair to Weston's left, nodded approvingly. "Lovely choice," she said. Her voice was warm. She didn't look at me.

I turned and walked back to the kitchen. Jessa followed. Neither of us spoke.

In the kitchen, I set the tray down carefully. My hands were steady. I had practice.

But beneath my ribs, something else was happening. The invisible thing I had been feeding for years—the ward I had woven into Ironmaw's borders with my own blood, the barrier I renewed every new moon in the woods where no one saw—was thinning. I could feel it the way you feel a tooth starting to loosen. Not gone yet. But soon.

I pressed my palm flat against the counter and breathed.

Jessa refilled her tray and left. I stayed.

The jasmine scent lingered even here.

---

Lila's scream woke me just after midnight.

I was out of bed before I was fully awake, my feet hitting the cold floor of the small room Weston had assigned us after Nancy decided the family wing was "too crowded." Lila's room was three doors down. I ran.

She was convulsing.

Her small body arced off the mattress, her face flushed a deep, unnatural red. I scooped her up. Her skin burned through her nightclothes. She screamed again, a raw sound that tore through her throat.

"Shh, baby, shh." I held her against my chest, one hand cradling her head. Her pulse hammered beneath my palm.

Silver. I could smell it—faint, acrid, wrong. A rogue breach. The ward had thinned enough to let debris through.

I carried Lila down the hall toward Weston's chambers. The mark on my neck—the one he'd given me three years ago, the one that was supposed to mean forever—throbbed with every step.

I didn't knock. I shoved the door open.

Weston sat on the edge of his bed, pulling off his boots. He looked up, irritated. Celine's jasmine clung to his collar, his shirt, his skin.

"She's burning up," I said. My voice came out steadier than I expected. "I need you to call Maren. Now."

Weston glanced at Lila. Her head lolled against my shoulder, her breathing shallow and fast.

"It's a fever," he said. "Give her water."

"It's silver contamination. There was a breach—"

"There was no breach." His tone sharpened. "The borders held."

Because I held them, I thought. Because I've been bleeding myself dry to hold them.

I didn't say it.

"Please," I said instead. "Just call Maren."

Weston stood. He was taller than me by half a foot. The Alpha aura pressed down, instinctive and dismissive.

"Pack resources," he said slowly, "are not wasted on Omega-level whining. Handle it yourself."

Lila whimpered. Her fingers curled weakly against my shirt.

Weston turned back to his bed. "Close the door on your way out."

I stood there for three seconds. Maybe four.

Then I turned and walked.

---

Maren Voss's cottage sat at the edge of pack territory, a small stone structure with herb bundles hanging in the windows. I pounded on the door until my knuckles ached.

Maren opened it, her gray hair loose around her shoulders, her eyes sharp. She took one look at Lila and stepped aside.

"Inside."

I followed her to the workroom. Maren cleared the table with one sweep of her arm, scattering dried lavender and mortar bowls. "Lay her down."

I did. Lila's eyes rolled back. Her small chest heaved.

Maren's hands moved quickly—pressing, checking, smelling. She muttered something under her breath and reached for a clay jar on the shelf.

"Silver?" she asked.

"Yes."

"How much exposure?"

"I don't know. The breach was—" I stopped. "Small."

Maren's eyes flicked to me, then back to Lila. She said nothing. She mixed something in a stone bowl, a paste that smelled like pine and ash, and spread it across Lila's chest and throat.

Lila's convulsions slowed. Her breathing evened, fractionally.

Maren worked through the night. I sat beside the table, holding Lila's hand. Her tiny fingers were hot and dry in mine.

The mark on my neck throbbed. Once, twice. Then it went cold.

I touched it without thinking. The skin felt smooth. Empty. Like a door closing in an empty room.

My wolf stirred, then collapsed inward, a small wounded sound I felt more than heard.

I pulled my hand away and focused on Lila.

At dawn, her fever broke. Maren wrapped her in a clean blanket and stepped back, wiping her hands on her apron.

"She'll need rest," Maren said quietly. "And no more exposure."

"Thank you," I whispered.

Maren looked at me for a long moment. "He didn't call me, did he."

It wasn't a question.

I didn't answer.

I lifted Lila carefully, cradling her against my chest. On the workroom shelf, I saw a small glass vial—Lila's first shed baby fur, the pale silver-white strands I'd brought Maren months ago for a blessing charm.

I picked it up. Maren didn't stop me.

I tied the vial to my wrist with a leather cord, knotting it three times.

Then I carried my daughter out into the morning light and walked back toward the pack house, knowing the door I'd heard closing wasn't the one I thought.
