My Alpha Stole Our Daughter’s Cure Chapter 1

The healer's chamber smelled like crushed sage and iron at 7:04 in the morning, and Selah's fever had spiked so high her wooden wolf toy was slick in her small hand.

"It ends today, baby," I whispered into her damp hair. "No more hurting. I promise."

She tried to smile. Her lips cracked open. "Mama."

Three years. Three years I'd hunted this vial across four territories, traded a Luna's favors for it, bled myself thin to pay for it. Elias Grant stood at the counter, hands shaking as he tipped the amber liquid into the syringe. The pack healer had aged ten years in six months trying to keep my daughter alive.

I pushed hope through the mate bond — just a flicker, just to share it — *she's going to live, Dalton, she's going to live.*

The bond returned nothing. A cold, empty room with the light off.

Then the door opened.

Dalton walked in with Lilia Salazar draped on his arm like a fur stole. She was pale, yes — but the kind of pale a woman practices in a mirror. Her floral perfume punched through the sage and made Selah cough against my collarbone.

"Elias." Dalton's voice dropped into that low, resonant register — the Alpha tone — and every wolf in the room felt it hit the base of the spine. "Lilia's wolfsbane exposure is critical. Redirect the antidote to her. *Now.*"

My body locked.

I screamed — I *know* I screamed, I felt my throat tear open around Selah's name — but my legs would not move. The command wrapped around my muscles like wet rope. Dalton's authority hammered inside my own chest, a second heartbeat that wasn't mine, that didn't care what mine wanted.

"Dalton — please — she's your *daughter* —"

Elias's eyes met mine. Wet. Wrecked. His hand was already moving. The Alpha tone had him too, and he was older, weaker in rank; he had no choice at all.

The needle went into Lilia's arm.

My three years liquefied into her veins in four seconds.

She collapsed against Dalton with a soft, theatrical sigh — and over his shoulder, her eyes found mine. The corner of her mouth lifted. Just a twitch. Just enough.

Selah whimpered, "Mama, is it my turn now?"

Something inside my ribs *hit* me. Hard. From the inside. My wolf — three years silent, three years pressed flat under Dalton's mark — slammed once against my bones and made me stagger. I gasped like I'd been punched.

I followed him into the corridor. I don't remember standing up.

"How." My fists were bloodless. "How could you."

Dalton turned, unhurried, adjusting his cuff. "Selah's condition is manageable. Lilia is carrying my pup."

"She's *what.*"

"You heard me." He tilted his chin, and his collar shifted half an inch — just enough. There it was. Another mark. High on his collarbone, still pink at the edges. A chosen-mate bite. Illegal. *Sacred* to break.

He saw me see it. He did not flinch.

"You've been a tolerable Luna, Quinn." He said it the way you'd rate a middling wine. "But Lilia is my future. If you want Selah to have whatever time she has left in peace, you'll keep your mouth shut."

He walked away. He did not look back.

My wolf hit my ribs again. Once. Enraged. A single, clean strike that left me gasping against the wall with Selah shivering in my arms and a taste like copper flooding my mouth.

Somewhere in the air — faint, impossible, always impossible — I caught it. Cedar. Winter storm. The scent I had chased through empty rooms for years and never named.

It was gone before I could breathe it in.

---

The moon was dark when I carried her to the boundary stones.

I'd walked this path every dawn for three years. Bare palms to cold rock. A drop of Luna blood, an offering, a shield stretched over sleeping pups and warriors who never once said thank you because they never once knew.

Selah's breath was shallow against my throat. Her wooden wolf pressed between us.

I pressed both palms flat to the stone.

And for the first time, I did not give.

I *pulled.*

The blood came back to me in a rush that tasted like grief and gasoline. Three years of my life force retracting through granite, through soil, through the roots of every tree that had ever leaned into my ward. The stones went dark under my hands — the faint warmth that had pulsed there since my mating ceremony guttering out like a blown match.

Shadowvale's shield collapsed.

I felt it go. A great inhaled breath released into nothing. Somewhere far to the north, a rogue wolf lifted its head and smelled the open door.

I wrapped Selah tighter. I stepped over the dead stones.

"Come on, baby," I whispered. "We're going."

The unshielded woods swallowed us. My antidote was gone. My ward was gone. My daughter was burning against my chest and I had no plan, no pack, no protection — nothing except the phantom trace of cedar drifting through the trees ahead of me, closer now, close enough that my wolf lifted her head inside me and *listened.*

Behind us, deep in the pack lands, a howl went up — long, low, hunting.

They knew I was gone.
