I Left After My Mate Marked Another Chapter 1

At 4:20 on a Thursday afternoon, I opened the door to Colton's quarters with a bundle of dried yarrow in my hands, and my bond went cold in my chest.

Not faint cold. Not draft-under-the-door cold. Cold like a hand closing over something warm.

The scent hit me before I got two steps in. Jasmine and burnt sugar. I knew that scent the way you know the sound of a belt being pulled through a loop. I had known it since I was nine years old and standing in my father's kitchen with an empty plate.

Alianna.

I stood there with the yarrow still in my fist. I made myself do it properly, the way the healers in Cresthollow taught me to read a wound — slowly, all the way to the bottom.

The bedding: soaked. Not one night. The scent had gone into the cotton the way smoke goes into a coat.

His shirts on the chair: layered. A fresh layer over an older one over one older still. Weeks. I counted four distinct layers before my hands started to shake and I stopped counting, because counting wasn't going to change the number.

The upholstered bench by the window smelled like both of them together, and that was the one that did it. That was the one that put a sound in my throat I didn't let out.

I had been gone eleven weeks. I had come home lighter than I'd been in years. I had spent the whole drive planning what to tell him about the burn salve I'd learned to make.

I set the yarrow down on his dresser, squared the edges of the bundle, and walked out.

The bond twisted twice on the stairs. Little searing pulls, like a stitch being tugged from the wrong side of the skin. Ten years I had waited for that bond to be finished. It had never been anything but a thread. Now the thread was telling me exactly where it was tied.

---

At 11:40 that night, my wolf moved.

She had never moved like that. In twenty-eight years she had done nothing but lie somewhere under my ribs like a stone in cold water, and every year of that silence had been a thing people said out loud in front of me. *Wolfless.* But that night something rose in my chest with real heat, pressed up against the inside of my ribs, and pushed.

I sat up in the dark and put my fist against my sternum.

She didn't press for freedom. She pressed northeast.

I got dressed. I whistled once at the back door and Barnaby came out of the dark, ears up, shoulder against my knee before I even reached down for him.

"We're going for a walk," I told him. "A long one."

---

The clearing was half a mile past the border stones. I stopped in the tree line because Barnaby stopped first, one paw lifted, and because the wind was coming toward us instead of away.

Colton had his hand in her hair. The moon came down hard and white on the two of them, on the tilt of Alianna's throat, on the bare skin she was giving him.

He bit her.

I heard it. That's the part I didn't expect — that a marking makes a sound, a soft wet click of teeth meeting under skin, and that she'd laugh through it.

My wolf went perfectly still. Not small. Still the way a thing goes still right before it moves.

"Say it again," Alianna whispered.

"At the Ceremony." His mouth was against her neck. My mate bond hummed with his voice like a wire in wind. "Three allied packs on the lawn. I say the vow, all of it, name and rank, and she sits there and hears it. Then you take the circlet."

"In front of everyone."

"The wolfless girl," he said, "who never had a title to lose."

I stood there until they were done. I watched all of it, on purpose, because I have spent my whole life letting people tell me later what happened to me.

Then I walked home through the dark with Barnaby against my leg, and for the first time in ten years I did not plan the breakfast rota or the linen order or the spring stores.

I planned for me.

---

The letter went out at seven the next morning with a neutral runner, addressed to Ambrose Kell, retired diplomat of the Lycan court, two territories east, and the only man alive who still owed my father anything.

I didn't explain the bite. I explained what mattered. Trained healer. Bloodline credentials. Invoking my father's standing alliance. Requesting protection.

The answer came back at 6:15 that evening. A healer's apprenticeship at the King's stronghold, under royal protection, outside any Alpha's reach.

I folded it into my journal, between the ward anchor coordinates on page four, and went down to serve dinner. Colton kissed my temple and said the roast was perfect. I said thank you.

---

At dusk the next day I took Barnaby west along the perimeter, like any evening walk.

Twelve paces off the old fence line, under the flat stone. Second anchor at the split birch. Third at the culvert. Ten years of wolfsbane root, wrapped and fed with my own blood, buried by my hands, holding a wall around a territory that had never once said my name out loud.

I dug them up. I turned each bundle over, cut the bloodline thread, and set it back in the earth dead. I smoothed the dirt with my palm so nothing showed.

Twenty-two to go. I had the order planned.

"Nine more nights," I told Barnaby, out loud, all of it. "You'll like the cold up north. They have a whole kitchen just for the healers."

Halfway home, Colton's voice slid into my head, warm as a hand on the back of my neck.

*"Where are you, sweetheart? The tailor's here for your ceremony fitting."*
