My Alpha Saved His Mistress Instead of Our Son Chapter 1

The bond broke at 10:14 on a Tuesday night.

I felt it snap the second Maximilian's hand closed around Katelyn's wrist instead of racing toward our son's window. The mate mark on my neck turned ice-cold, then hollow—like a door slamming shut in an empty room.

I was still half a mile out when the mind-link screams hit me. Pack house. Fire. I shifted mid-sprint, my wolf tearing through the forest faster than I'd ever run. The air tasted like smoke and burning wood and something else—something chemical, wrong. My paws hit the clearing just as the second-floor windows exploded outward in a shower of glass.

Maximilian stood in the center of the chaos, soot on his face, Katelyn clinging to his arm. Reign was pressed against her hip, coughing. Safe. Whole.

I shifted back, my human lungs seizing. "Where's Shiloh?"

No one answered.

I shoved through the crowd of pack members—Deltas with buckets, Omegas crying, Gammas trying to form a line. The heat from the flames hit my face like a wall. I could hear him. Faint, high-pitched, terrified.

"Mama!"

My wolf surged. I lunged for the door.

Beta Silas caught me by both arms, his grip like iron. "Luna, you can't—"

"Let go!" I twisted, clawed, kicked. His hands didn't budge. "That's my son!"

"Alpha's orders." His voice was flat. Mechanical.

I looked past him. Maximilian stood twenty feet away, one arm still around Katelyn's shoulders. His eyes met mine. Cold. Steady. Unapologetic.

"Maximilian!" My voice cracked. "He's inside!"

He stepped forward, and the Alpha aura rolled off him in waves—thick, suffocating, absolute. The crowd fell silent. Even my wolf recoiled, whimpering.

"I saved who I could reach," he said. His tone was calm. Measured. The voice he used at Council meetings. "I will not risk more lives on impulse. That is not leadership."

"That's our son!" I screamed it. I didn't care who heard. "You left him!"

"I followed protocol." His jaw tightened. "I pulled the nearest victims from immediate danger. I cannot show favoritism, Estelle. Not even for my own blood. The pack comes first."

Katelyn's face was buried against his chest. She wasn't crying. She wasn't making a sound. But her fingers were white-knuckled on his shirt, and when she glanced up at me through her lashes, I saw it.

Satisfaction.

My wolf snarled. I felt her rising, clawing toward the surface, ready to rip through Silas's hold and tear into both of them. But Maximilian's Alpha tone slammed down harder.

"Stand. Down."

My knees buckled. Silas's grip was the only thing keeping me upright. My vision blurred. The bond in my chest was so cold now it burned.

Behind the flames, Shiloh's voice cut off.

The silence that followed was worse than the screaming.

I don't know how long I stood there. Long enough for the roof to cave in. Long enough for the Healer to arrive and shake his head. Long enough for the crowd to start whispering.

When Silas finally let me go, I walked into the wreckage.

The structure was still hot. Ash floated in the air like snow. I stepped over charred beams and melted plastic. My bare feet left prints in the soot. No one tried to stop me this time.

Shiloh's room was in the east corner. The door was blackened, hanging off one hinge. I pushed it open.

The bed frame was twisted metal. The walls were scorched black. In the center of the floor, half-buried in cinders, I found it.

His wooden wolf. The one my father carved for his first birthday. The paint was bubbled and peeling, one ear melted down to a nub. But I knew the shape.

I picked it up. It was still warm.

My wolf howled inside my skull. The sound was so loud I thought the whole pack would hear it. But when I looked up, no one was watching me. They were all gathered around Maximilian, listening to him give orders about salvage and rebuilding.

Katelyn was still tucked under his arm.

I closed my fingers around the toy. The wood bit into my palm.

Then I stood. Walked out of the ruin. Crossed the yard. My feet left ash prints on the grass.

Maximilian turned when I stopped in front of him. His expression was carefully neutral. Controlled.

I held up the wooden wolf.

"Why," I said, "was the door to his room locked from the outside?"

The whispers stopped. Every head turned.

Maximilian's jaw tightened. He didn't answer.

I looked at Katelyn. She was staring at the ground, her face pale, her fingers digging into Reign's shoulder.

"Why," I repeated, louder this time, "was my son's door locked?"

Still nothing.

I felt it then. The hollow space where the mate bond used to be. It wasn't empty anymore. It was filling with something else. Something sharp and cold and patient.

I turned and walked away. No one followed me.

But I heard Maximilian's voice behind me, low and clipped, giving orders to Silas.

And I heard Katelyn's breath hitch—just once—before she pressed her face back into his chest.

I didn't look back.
