The morning after Apollo's failed mating ceremony, I found Maren in the strategy room with maps spread across every surface. She didn't look up when I entered.

"Three packs are asking questions," she said. "About you. About Ronin's coup. About whether Ironmaw's leadership is stable."

I moved closer. The maps showed territories I recognized—neutral packs that held Council seats, their boundaries marked in careful ink. "What kind of questions?"

"The careful kind." Maren tapped one territory. "Alpha Marcus of Clearwater received a letter last week. Anonymous. Claimed you were responsible for negligence that nearly killed someone during a dive operation. Another pack got photographs—claw marks, staged to look like an unprovoked attack." She finally looked at me. "Someone's building a case."

My wolf stirred. Not with fear. With recognition.

"Anastasia," I said.

Maren's expression didn't change. "That would be my assessment."

I stared at the maps. At the territories marked with question marks, the packs whose loyalty could shift with the right pressure. Anastasia wasn't raging. She was operating. Building her tribunal case one careful lie at a time.

"What does Ronin want me to do?" I asked.

Maren gathered the maps. "He wants you at the coastal negotiations this afternoon. As his specialist, not his Luna. Your choice whether that's enough."

She left. I stood there in the empty room, my mind already cataloguing what Anastasia would need to make her case stick. Witnesses. Documentation. A pattern of behavior that looked credible to wolves who'd never met me.

She'd had three years to watch me. She knew exactly what to fabricate.

The negotiations took place in a neutral hall on the boundary between three territories. I arrived with Maren, not Ronin—another deliberate choice. The representatives were already seated: Alpha Marcus of Clearwater, a weathered wolf with careful eyes; Alpha Sienna of Tidemark, younger and sharp; and Beta Garrett of Saltpine, who watched me enter with open skepticism.

I set my harvesting records on the table. Not Ronin's authority. Mine.

"The current boundary proposal ignores tidal realities," I said. No preamble. No deference. "You're fighting over territory that's inaccessible half the year and dangerous the other half."

Alpha Marcus leaned forward. "And you're suggesting?"

I unrolled the map I'd marked for Maren. Traced the alternative boundaries with one finger. "Three zones, redistributed by depth and tidal access. Clearwater gets the northern kelp beds—deep water, but you've got the free-divers for it. Tidemark takes the shallows during spring tide. Saltpine gets year-round access to the mid-depth zone, which is what you actually need for your medicinal stores."

Beta Garrett's eyes narrowed. "How do you know what our stores need?"

"Because I've been harvesting wolfsbane for six years." I met his gaze. "I know which depths produce which compounds. I know which sites flood and which stay accessible. And I know the current proposal will have all three of you back at this table in six months fighting over the same territory."

Silence. Alpha Sienna studied the map, her expression unreadable.

"These depth calculations," she said finally. "You're certain?"

I pulled out my dive records. Three years of coordinates, tide schedules, saturation measurements. Not theory. Evidence.

Alpha Marcus read through two pages, then looked up. "Who taught you this?"

"No one taught me." My voice came out flat. "I learned it by doing it. Alone. In water that would've killed most wolves."

Something shifted in his expression. Not sympathy. Respect.

The negotiations lasted four hours. They challenged every boundary line, questioned every depth measurement, pushed back on access schedules. I answered each challenge with data I'd memorized, tidal patterns I'd mapped myself, practical realities I'd learned through six years of work that Apollo had never bothered to understand.

By the time we finished, both Alpha Marcus and Alpha Sienna had signed the preliminary agreement.

Beta Garrett signed last, his jaw tight. "This is solid work," he said grudgingly.

I gathered my records. "It's accurate work. There's a difference."

Maren was waiting outside. She said nothing until we were in the transport back to Ironmaw.

"You didn't use Ronin's name once," she said.

I looked out the window. "I didn't need to."

Her silence afterward felt like approval.

I found Ronin in his study that evening, sealed dispatch cases stacked on his desk. He was reading something when I entered, and his expression closed before I could see what it was.

I stopped in the doorway. Watched him set the paper down. Watched him choose his face.

"If you are protecting me from information," I said quietly, "you are making the same choice he did. You are deciding what I can bear."

The words landed between us like stones.

Ronin went very still. Then he stood, crossed to the dispatch case, and opened it.

He spread the contents across the desk without speaking. Intelligence reports. Intercepted communications. Photographs of Anastasia meeting with wolves I didn't recognize. Early forensic analysis of harbor wreckage, the scent markers still being processed.

I moved closer. Read through each document in silence. The architecture of Anastasia's campaign was there in careful detail—the lies she'd planted, the packs she'd contacted, the tribunal case she was building one fabricated piece of evidence at a time.

When I finished, I looked up. Ronin was watching me with an expression I'd never seen before. Not strategy. Something rawer.

"I've been tracking her for two weeks," he said. His voice was quiet. Careful. "Building the counter-case. I didn't want you to carry this until I knew I could dismantle it."

I understood what it cost him to say that. To offer vulnerability instead of control.

"Show me the wreckage analysis," I said.

He pulled out a separate file. Preliminary scent markers from the accelerant-soaked debris. Chemical compounds that didn't match any authorized Driftwood stores. And a partial scent signature the analysts were still processing.

I stared at it. At the evidence that could prove what I already knew.

"How long until it's conclusive?" I asked.

Ronin's jaw tightened. "Three weeks. Maybe less."

I traced the scent marker report with one finger. Three weeks until we could prove Anastasia set the fire. Three weeks until the tribunal could strip her of every protection she'd built.

Three weeks while she kept fabricating her case against me.

"She's not going to wait," I said.

Ronin's eyes met mine. "I know."

We stood there in the study, surrounded by evidence and strategy, and I felt my wolf stir—not with fear, but with something colder. Something that understood we were in a race now.

And only one of us would reach the Council first.
