My Alpha Rejected Me for His Rogue Mistress Chapter 1

The bond broke at 10:14 on a Tuesday night.

I knew the exact moment because I was staring at the ceremonial clock above the altar when Memphis finally walked through the hall doors—twenty minutes late to our own Mate Ceremony—and the scent hit me before he did. Floral. Cloying. Layered thick across his neck like he'd bathed in it. Nellie's scent.

My hands stopped being steady.

Three hundred wolves filled the Silverfang ceremonial hall. Allied Alphas in the front rows. The Lycan King's Beta—Victor Hale—seated in the diplomatic section, his posture formal and watchful. My ceremonial white dress had lace sleeves that suddenly felt too tight. I'd spent five years waiting for this moment. Five years brewing wolfsbane antidotes that kept Memphis's warriors alive. Five years brokering alliances he didn't have the patience to manage himself. Five years functioning as Luna in every way except the one that mattered: the public mark that would make it real.

Memphis didn't look at me as he approached the altar.

He didn't take my hand.

He faced the assembled pack and spoke in a flat, carrying voice that reached every corner of the hall: "I, Memphis Watkins, Alpha of Silverfang Pack, reject you, Elena Graham, as my mate and Luna."

The mark on my neck went ice-cold.

Then it went empty.

The mate bond didn't break cleanly—it ripped. Every nerve in my body lit up and then severed, like someone had taken a blade to every thread connecting me to him and pulled. My knees buckled. I grabbed the altar edge to stay upright, but my vision was already whiting out at the edges. Somewhere inside my mind, something screamed.

Not grief.

Fury.

My wolf—the wolf I was told would never awaken, the wolf that should have emerged at sixteen and never did—was screaming with a sound that made my skull ache. *"He threw us away,"* she snarled, and her voice was not soft or broken. It was rage given form, and it was the first time I had ever heard her.

I doubled over. My hands hit the floor. The ceremonial hall spun.

Memphis turned toward the side entrance. Nellie stepped forward in Luna white—the exact shade I was wearing—and took her place beside him at the altar. She didn't look at me either. Her face was serene, practiced, perfect.

That was when my bones started to crack.

The shift was involuntary. I didn't choose it—it exploded out of me. My spine reformed. My muscles tore and rebuilt. Fur erupted across my skin in a blinding wave of silver-white that radiated light like I'd swallowed the moon whole. The ceremonial dress shredded. My wolf surged forward, massive and Alpha-sized, and the nearest pack members stumbled backward as my aura flooded the hall.

Victor Hale dropped to one knee.

His face went ashen. His voice carried across the stunned silence: "Royal blood."

Memphis staggered. His Alpha aura—the one that had commanded this pack for years—suddenly felt small. Dwarfed. Nellie froze mid-step, her hand still extended toward Memphis's arm, her serene mask cracking at the edges.

I stood in the center of the ceremonial hall in wolf form, and every wolf in the room felt it: the aura that should not exist, radiating from a she-wolf they had dismissed as too weak to matter.

*"We were never what they said we were,"* my wolf—Sable—said inside my mind, and her voice was steady and absolute.

I held the hall in silence for ten full seconds. Let them look. Let them see exactly what Memphis had just thrown away.

Then I shifted back.

The transition left me shaking but upright, naked and unarmed in front of three hundred witnesses. I didn't cover myself. I walked to the altar—past Memphis, past Nellie—and retrieved the ceremonial wrap that had been prepared for his Luna. I pulled it around my own shoulders, slow and deliberate, and turned toward the main doors.

Memphis moved to block my path.

"Stop." His Alpha tone hit me full force, the command weight designed to drop a wolf to their knees.

I went very still.

Three seconds of silence. I closed my eyes. Sable surged forward in my mind, and I felt my aura—royal, silver, absolute—radiate outward in a wave that physically forced Memphis back half a step before he could process what had happened.

I opened my eyes and looked at him.

"You don't command me anymore," I said quietly.

I walked past him. He didn't try to stop me again.

I exited the hall under my own power, carrying nothing but the ceremonial wrap and the small field notebook I'd tucked inside my bodice before the ceremony—the one where I'd recorded every alliance term, every antidote formula, every slight I'd been told to forgive and forget.

Behind me, the hall erupted into chaos.

I didn't look back.

The night air hit my face as I stepped outside, cold and sharp and clean. My wolf was still awake inside my mind, pacing and restless and furious.

*"Where do we go?"* I asked her.

*"Anywhere but here,"* Sable growled. *"And we take everything he needs with us."*

I smiled.

I had the notebook. I had the alliances Memphis thought were his. And I had a wolf he never saw coming.

That would be enough to start.
