My Alpha Publicly Rejected Me While I Carried His Child Chapter 1

The clock above the Banquet hall doors read 9:12 when Jackson's fingers slid out of mine.

I felt it before I understood it — the mark at the curve of my neck, warm every night for three years, going cold. Not fading. Cold, like a stone pulled from a fire and dropped into snow.

He rose from the head table. Two hundred wolves went silent at once, the way a held breath goes silent. My hand found the curve of my stomach on its own, the way it had for six months, an animal reflex older than thought.

"I, Jackson Brooks, Alpha of Nightshade," he said, and his voice carried the Alpha tone, pressing down on every wolf in the hall like a hand on the back of the neck, "reject you, Jade Spencer, as my mate and Luna."

The cord in my chest didn't snap. It closed. A door shutting on a room that used to have someone in it, and now there was only the shape of where they'd stood.

I smelled her on him before I saw her rise — jasmine and something sweeter underneath, something wrong, layered over his skin like she'd already been marking her territory on him for weeks. Louisa Medina crossed to him with her head bowed, demure, and he bent his mouth to her throat.

The hemorrhage took me to the floor before he finished. I don't remember the pain as pain. I remember the stone under my cheek, cold and specific, and the sound of two hundred wolves not moving to help me, because he had already told them not to.

The Healer worked over me with her jaw locked tight, her hands shaking with the effort of doing only what she'd been permitted — enough to keep me breathing, no more. I made myself stay conscious for the whisper she gave the second Healer beside her. "The bleed took the pregnancy. And I don't think she'll carry again. Ever."

I did not cry. I filed it.

Morning came in gray light through a window I no longer had the right to call mine. Jackson stood at the center of the great hall and spoke into every mind in the pack at once, his Alpha tone rolling through my skull like a hand closing around my throat from the inside.

*Jade Spencer is stripped of her title as Luna. She holds the rank of Omega. No wolf will assist her, shelter her, or open mind-link to her. Any wolf who does will answer to me as though they had raised a hand against their Alpha.*

The tone pressed on my knees, on the back of my neck, wanting me bowed. I felt Reina Flores flinch two rows over, felt a dozen warriors I had trained beside look at the floor instead of me. I kept my chin level. I kept my eyes on Jackson's face until he was the one who looked away first. That was the only thing I gave him back.

I pressed my thumb into the inside of my wrist, the old grounding habit from years my wolf wouldn't answer me, and I thought: *she's not dead. Just quiet.* Somewhere under the wreckage of the bond, something turned over, slow and reptile-cold, listening.

They walked me to the lower wing. I walked myself. The Omega room was bare — no chair, no mirror, a cot stripped to its frame — and a guard took his post outside without meeting my eyes. I chose the corner farthest from the door and sat with my palm flat on the cold floor, counting what I still owned: eleven years of combat training no one could take from me. The pack house's structural layout, every vent and stair, memorized before I was fifteen. And whatever was left of my wolf, silent, unreachable, but breathing.

Louisa came at dusk with a tray, two Omegas trailing her as witnesses to her own generosity. She set the bowl down like she was laying a gift at an altar.

"I hope," she said, soft, apologetic, touching her own collarbone, "there are no hard feelings."

I said nothing. I watched her leave.

Something in my chest gave a low vibration then — not a howl, barely a heartbeat, but unmistakably alive. My wolf, stirring for the first time since the vow.

I leaned over the bowl. Beneath the broth's surface, something floral caught the lamplight, a faint oily sheen that didn't belong to any spice in a Nightshade kitchen.

I didn't touch the spoon. I dipped two fingers into the broth instead, and let a single drop fall onto the cloth beside me, where it would dry into something I could show someone, someday, when the time was right.

The door had a slot at the bottom for the tray to be slid through. Through it, I heard Louisa's voice in the hallway, low and pleased, speaking to someone I couldn't see.

"Make sure she finishes the whole bowl tonight."
