My Alpha Mate Chose His Mistress Over Our Baby Chapter 1

I was seven months pregnant when I found the bracelet.

It was a Thursday afternoon, the kind of late autumn day where the sun came through the trees in thin gold slices and the air smelled like woodsmoke and coming frost. I'd been managing pack logistics all morning — coordinating the Harvest Gathering preparations, confirming vendor deliveries, checking in with the Omegas about setup schedules. My back ached. My feet were swollen. But I was happy. The pup kicked steadily beneath my ribs, a reassuring rhythm that made every discomfort worth it.

Connor had taken his truck to meet with the neighboring pack's Beta about border patrol rotations. I needed my phone charger — I'd left it plugged into his dashboard the night before — so I walked out to the driveway where he'd parked and opened the driver's side door.

The charger was there, coiled neatly in the cup holder. I reached for it, then paused.

The center console was slightly open. Just a crack. Enough that I could see something glinting inside.

I told myself not to look. I told myself it was nothing. But my hand moved anyway, pulling the console lid up.

A bracelet lay coiled inside. Delicate. Silver chain. A tiny she-wolf charm dangling from the center, its edges detailed with careful engraving.

I lifted it slowly. The metal was warm, as if someone had been wearing it recently. I turned the charm over.

Initials. Engraved in a looping, feminine script.

*M.R.*

The scent hit me a second later. Honeysuckle. Cloying and sweet and utterly wrong. It clung to the chain, saturated into the metal, thick enough to make my stomach turn.

I'd been smelling that scent for weeks.

On Connor's jacket when he came home late from pack meetings. On the passenger seat of this truck when I'd ridden with him to the healer's office for my last checkup. On his skin, faint but unmistakable, when he kissed my forehead and told me he was too tired to talk.

I sat down in the driver's seat, bracelet in my palm, staring at the little she-wolf charm.

My wolf stirred inside me. Not with rage. With something quieter. Something that felt like recognition.

*You already knew,* she whispered.

I closed my fingers around the bracelet. The chain bit into my palm.

I didn't cry. I didn't scream. I sat there for a long time, feeling the pup kick beneath my ribs and the wrongness settle into my bones like a chill I couldn't shake.

Then I stood, pocketed the bracelet, and walked back into the pack house.

That evening, I placed the bracelet on the kitchen counter.

Connor came in from his office just after sunset, rolling his shoulders and rubbing the back of his neck. He looked tired. Handsome, still, in that broad-shouldered, easy way that had first caught my attention two years ago. He smiled when he saw me.

"Hey, baby. You feeling okay? You look pale."

I didn't answer. I just nodded toward the counter.

His gaze followed mine. He went still.

For one heartbeat, I thought I saw it — guilt, panic, something human. But it passed so quickly I couldn't be sure it had ever been there at all.

He picked up the bracelet, turning it over in his fingers like it was a piece of mail he'd been expecting.

"Where did you find this?" His voice was calm. Too calm.

"Your truck," I said quietly. "Center console."

He sighed. Not the sigh of a man caught. The sigh of a man inconvenienced.

"Gemma." He set the bracelet down and crossed his arms. "This is pack business. One of the younger she-wolves asked me to hold onto it while she was training. I forgot it was in there."

"It smells like honeysuckle," I said.

His jaw tightened. "So?"

"You smell like honeysuckle, Connor. Your jacket. Your car. Your—"

"Stop." His voice sharpened. "You're doing this again."

"Doing what?"

"This." He gestured at me, at the bracelet, at the space between us. "You're seven months pregnant. Your hormones are all over the place. You're stressed about the Gathering. And now you're imagining things that aren't there."

I stared at him. "I'm not imagining the scent, Connor."

"You're imagining what it means." He stepped closer, his expression softening into something that looked like concern but felt like condescension. "I'm Alpha of this pack. I interact with dozens of wolves every day. Some of them are she-wolves. Some of them wear perfume. That's not betrayal, Gemma. That's my job."

I felt it then. The first fracture.

It wasn't dramatic. It didn't crack like thunder or shatter like glass. It was quieter than that. A sickening wrongness that rippled through the mate bond, like a bone cracking under weight it was never meant to carry.

My wolf whined. A low, distressed sound that only I could hear.

Connor picked up the bracelet and slipped it into his pocket. He kissed my forehead — quick, dismissive — and left the room.

I stood there alone, one hand pressed to my belly, feeling the pup kick.

And I felt the bond crack a little wider.
