My Alpha Captain Chose Her While I Bled Chapter 1

I was the invisible team medic secretly mated to Carter Vaughn, the league’s most feared Alpha captain.

Two years ago, when a bad medical call nearly ended my career, Carter stood before the board and took the blame himself.

That night, he marked me, married me in secret, and promised no one would ever make me bleed alone.

I believed him.

Then his first love, former skating champion Sienna Blake, came back.

At practice, she crashed on a patch of damaged ice and screamed my name.

Every camera turned toward me.

Carter did not ask what happened.

He tore my medical badge from my neck in front of the team and ordered security to lock my records.

My mate bond burned while he carried Sienna past me.

“Strip her access.”

“Carter, I’m your wife.”

“Not in this rink.”

“Get Lena’s consent for Moon Blood. Sienna needs it tonight.”

***

The deadbolt clicked behind us, cutting off the roar of the arena.

Carter turned from the recovery-room door and finally stopped looking like Captain Vaughn. He tossed the cold pack from his shoulder onto the exam table, crossed the tile floor, and bent to the hidden mate mark beneath the collar of my Northstar Icehawks medical jacket.

His mouth touched my skin. His palm settled at the small of my back and drew me against the chest thousands of fans believed belonged to no one.

I let myself lean into him for one breath before pulling away.

"Do you only remember I'm your wife when the door is locked?"

Two years ago, I had been a sports-medicine fellow fighting a board complaint after a supervising physician pinned his diagnostic error on me. Carter had walked into the hearing, admitted what he had witnessed, and saved my license. That same night, under a blood moon, the mate bond between us had snapped into place.

I will never let you face the fallout alone, he had promised.

Since then, I had treated his recurring shoulder injury, slept in his bed, worn his ring on a chain beneath my scrubs, and left every arena through service exits so Northstar's rising Alpha could remain publicly unattached.

Carter brushed his thumb along my jaw. "The succession audit is next month. Once the elders sign off—"

"You've been saying that for a year."

His phone lit up on the stainless-steel counter.

Sienna Blake.

He released me so quickly the change in temperature felt physical.

"Cover my scent before you go back out," he said, already reaching for the door. "Media day."

"Of course."

He paused, but whatever apology might have been there never reached his mouth. Then he was gone.

Ten minutes later, a scream cut across the rink.

Sienna collapsed in the figure-skating test lane, her right knee striking the ice. Players stopped mid-drill. Maintenance workers hurried toward a patch of softened surface beside her.

One of them lifted a bottle of ice-treatment fluid.

A white equipment label wrapped around the plastic.

L.H.

The head of security checked his tablet. "Dr. Hart, your keycard entered the maintenance zone at nine fourteen."

Every face turned toward me.

I looked directly at Carter. "I was in the locked recovery room treating Captain Vaughn's shoulder. He can verify where I was."

Carter's expression did not change.

"Dr. Hart's medical clearance is suspended effective immediately," he announced.

For a second, I thought I had misheard him.

He walked toward me, unclipped my badge from my jacket, and handed it to security. "Disable her medication and file access pending review."

The team erupted into whispers.

Carter leaned close enough that only my wolf hearing caught his next words.

"This is a team investigation, Lena. You're the team doctor first and my mate second."

My stomach turned.

The suspension hurt. His silence hurt more.

He was my alibi. He knew it. All he had to do was tell the truth, and he chose to let an arena full of people believe I had sabotaged his former lover instead.

Naomi, Northstar's head healer, scanned Sienna's leg in the medical wing while I stood outside the treatment line with no badge and no authority.

"No new fracture," Naomi said. "Her old knee injury flared after the fall. Standard treatment will stabilize it, but full werewolf healing may take several weeks."

"Weeks?" Carter's voice hardened.

Naomi nodded. "Unless you have high-activity Moon Blood with strong Alpha resonance. That would accelerate tissue repair."

Carter carried Sienna out of imaging before she could put weight on the leg. Her arms circled his neck, her cheek tucked against his shoulder.

My mate mark burned when they passed.

I forced myself to stay still.

"Standard treatment is medically safe?" I asked Naomi.

"Yes."

"Then there is no emergency."

"Longer isn't an option," Carter said from the hall. "The charity gala is Friday. She needs to skate."

He handed Sienna to a nurse and came back for me.

He cornered me beside the storage room and pressed a clipboard against my chest.

Moon Blood Donation Consent.

I stared at it. "You suspended me for supposedly hurting her, and now you want my blood in her body?"

"Cooperation helps your case."

"Or it makes me look guilty enough to need redemption."

"Lena. Sign it."

I lowered the clipboard. "I've been nauseous for two days. My period is late. I need a pregnancy screen before anyone draws Moon Blood."

His jaw flexed. "Don't turn every physical symptom into a reason for me to choose you."

The sentence landed harder than a slap.

He started away.

I pulled my backup tablet from my pocket. My suspension blocked clinical files, not raw facility logs.

"My card entered maintenance at nine fourteen," I said.

Carter stopped.

"Your biometric scan locked the recovery-room door at nine twelve. We didn't leave until nine twenty." I held up the screen. "Only your palm can engage that lock. Release the log and I'm cleared."

He stared at the timestamps.

"If I release it," he said at last, "the press asks why we were locked in a private treatment room together."

"So this is about the hidden marriage."

"It's about the succession audit, sponsors, and the pack. I am not detonating all of that over a temporary suspension."

He took the clipboard back, found a silver pen, and offered it to me.

"Donate. The league will record that you assisted Sienna after the incident."

The man who once risked his reputation to defend my license was now asking me to bleed so he would not have to risk it again.

I took the pen.

Carter exhaled, almost relieved.

I pressed the clipboard against the wall but did not sign the donor line.

Instead, I tapped the blank family-authorization section with the pen.

"Fine," I said. "I'll sign after the screening."

His shoulders loosened.

"But first, write your real identity here."

I looked him straight in the eye.

"Not captain. Not Alpha guardian. My husband."

Carter's hand froze over the page.
