Chapter 4

Before he could answer, my son escaped the housekeeper, raced across the room, and threw himself into that man’s arms.

“Dad!” Leo shouted.

Every lie in the room died at once.

Damian caught Leo against his chest.

For one second, relief stripped away the ruthless control he showed the rest of the world. He buried his face in our son’s hair, closed his eyes, and held him hard enough to make Leo squeak.

“Easy, Daddy,” Leo said. “My bones are still growing.”

Damian loosened his arms but did not put him down. “Are you hurt?”

“No. The old lady gave me tiny sandwiches, but she said Mommy was confused.”

Damian’s gaze lifted to Eleanor.

I had seen my husband angry in boardrooms. I had seen him dismantle executives with six quiet questions and make hostile investors beg for another meeting.

Richard recovered first. “Damian, there’s been a misunderstanding.”

“I don't think it's a misunderstanding.”

His voice was low and precise.

Eleanor’s hand gripped the back of the sofa. “Why is that child calling you Daddy?”

Damian looked at me.

Only then did I allow myself to breathe.

“He calls me Daddy,” he said, “because I am his father.”

Richard stared at Leo, then at Damian. Family resemblance rearranged itself before his eyes. Adrian and Damian shared the same dark hair, gray eyes, and left-cheek dimple. In childhood photographs, they had looked almost like brothers rather than uncle and nephew.

“You?” Eleanor whispered.

“My wife and my son,” Damian said. “The woman your family drove out of Bellhaven six years ago through humiliation and influence, and the child you kidnapped today.”

Damian crossed the room and stopped beside me. With Leo balanced on one arm, he placed his free hand against the back of my neck.

The familiar touch steadied me.

“We married five years ago.”

Richard sank into a chair.

Eleanor’s face turned gray. “But she was Adrian’s—”

“Be very careful how you finish that sentence.”

Police voices rose in the hall. NovaGen’s general counsel entered with two officers and three members of Whitmore security who answered directly to Damian.

Eleanor looked from them to her brother-in-law. “We believed Leo was our grandson.”

“So you stole him?” Damian asked.

“We were protecting Whitmore blood.”

“He is Whitmore blood. That never gave you ownership of him.”

Leo rested his head on Damian’s shoulder. “Can we go home now?”

“Yes.” Damian kissed his temple. “Mommy and I are taking you home.”

I stepped close enough to check Leo’s face, hands, and arms for injury. He smelled like peanut butter and the expensive soap used in the estate bathrooms. He appeared unharmed, but when he reached for me, his fingers shook.

That tiny tremor settled my decision.

I faced the officers. “I want to file charges.”

Eleanor gasped. “Against family?”

“You are not my family.”

As the police began asking questions, Damian guided us out. Rain struck the stone steps. His car waited at the entrance, engine running.

Inside, with Leo buckled between us, Damian took my hand.

“I’m sorry,” he said.

“No, it's my fault. I should have anticipated Adrian would tell them.”

“You could not anticipate criminal stupidity.”

His thumb moved over my knuckles.

I looked at his profile and remembered the first time I saw him six years earlier.

I had been two months into my doctorate and quietly falling apart.

Westbridge University was beautiful from a distance—sunlit brick buildings, eucalyptus trees, students crossing lawns with coffee and impossible confidence. Inside the biomedical engineering lab, I felt like an intruder who had fooled everyone.

My savings vanished into deposits, books, and my mother’s medical bills. My scholarship covered survival, not comfort. I slept four hours a night, lived on instant oatmeal, and checked my email every morning despite knowing Adrian would never find the new address.

Professor Helen Grant noticed my work, not my unraveling.

“Evelyn, our private sponsor is visiting tomorrow,” she said one evening. “You’ll present the polymer scaffold project.”

“I’m not ready.”

“You’re the only person who understands why it failed.”

“It failed because I designed the cross-linking ratio badly.”

“And you found the error before anyone else. That is called research.”

The next morning, I entered the conference room and saw Adrian’s face.

My notes fell from my hands.

The man at the window turned. He was older than Adrian, his shoulders broader, his expression harder. A faint scar crossed one eyebrow. He wore no tie, only a black shirt with the sleeves rolled to his forearms.

“Ms. Carter?”

His voice was wrong. Deeper. Calmer.

I gathered my papers. “Who are you?”

“Damian Whitmore.”

The surname made my stomach turn.

He was the principal investor behind the Whitmore Foundation’s medical research fund. More importantly, he was Adrian’s uncle—the youngest son of Adrian’s late grandfather, born years after Richard.

I should have excused myself.

Instead, I disliked him on sight.

During my presentation, he asked why I had chosen a costly peptide coating when a synthetic alternative might work. The question was reasonable. I heard accusation anyway.

“Because some of us care whether the material works, not only whether it creates a profitable press release,” I said.

Professor Grant stopped breathing.

Damian studied me. “Can you prove the peptide performs better?”

“I can design the comparison.”

“Then do it.”

That was all.

He approved an additional grant before leaving.

Over the following months, he visited often. I was rude every time.

If he asked for a progress report, I sent sixty pages without a summary. If he offered coffee, I said I did not accept gifts from Whitmore men. Once, when he found me asleep at my desk at two in the morning, he placed his coat over my shoulders.

I woke, recognized the expensive fabric, and dropped it on the floor.

“You could say thank you,” he said.

“You could stop pretending kindness erases your last name.”

His eyes sharpened. “What did my family do to you?”

“Ask them.”

“I’m asking you.”

I walked away.

He never used his funding to punish me. He never complained to my professor. He simply kept returning, absorbing every blade I threw at him without offering one back.

I hated that patience most of all.

It made him different from Adrian.

And I was not ready for different.

In the car six years later, Damian brushed a curl from Leo’s forehead.

Our son had fallen asleep with one hand wrapped around my finger and the other clutching Damian’s sleeve.

“You’re staring at me,” Damian murmured.

“I’m remembering how much I disliked you.”

His mouth curved. “You threw my coat on a laboratory floor.”

“It was an arrogant coat.”

“It was cashmere.”

“That made it worse.”

He lifted my hand and kissed my knuckles.

Outside, the Whitmore estate disappeared behind the rain.

Inside the car, my husband held our son between us, and the past finally began giving back what it had taken.
