He Saved His First Love—His Three Brothers Helped Me Leave Him Chapter 1

Ten minutes after I became Mrs. Adrian Valenti, the wedding photographer asked the family to gather around my husband.

I stepped toward Adrian, expecting the place beside him to finally be mine.

His mother touched my arm and moved me to the far side of the frame.

Camille DeLuca walked in late and took the space beside Adrian without asking.

No one corrected her.

Adrian only looked at me and said, “Camille is family.”

I was the bride, but everyone arranged themselves around the woman he had once wanted to marry.

Then Luca called me a Moretti spy, Matteo quietly pulled me back into the photograph, and Nico bent close enough for only me to hear him.

“Wrong brother, sweetheart.”

I had agreed to a loveless marriage to clear my father's debt, protect my younger brother, and stop a war.

I had not agreed to disappear inside someone else's family.

So when Adrian told me Camille would keep her place in the house, I asked the staff to move my luggage out of his suite.

Adrian caught the first suitcase on the stairs.

For the first time all night, my perfectly controlled husband looked angry.

***

The wedding had barely ended when I finally let myself breathe.

Mrs. Adrian Valenti.

The name should have felt like a shield. For six months, everyone around me had treated this marriage as the cleanest way to stop two families from tearing each other apart. My father called it peace. Adrian called it practical. I had told myself that practical did not have to mean cruel.

Standing beneath the white roses in the Valenti ballroom, with Adrian's ring warm on my finger, I almost believed it.

Then the photographer called for the family portrait.

Teresa Valenti, Adrian's mother, began arranging everyone with the efficiency of a woman who had hosted a hundred public events. Luca and Nico took the back row. Matteo moved beside Teresa. Adrian stood in the center.

I stepped toward him.

Teresa's hand touched my forearm.

"Bella, sweetheart, over here."

She guided me toward the far side of the group.

I stopped. "I thought I was standing beside Adrian."

Her smile did not change. "Camille always stands there for the family photograph. It's tradition."

Before I could answer, Camille walked into the space beside my husband.

She did not hesitate. She never seemed to in this house.

Her hand settled lightly against Adrian's sleeve, familiar without looking intimate enough for anyone to challenge. That was Camille's particular talent. She could claim a place in front of everyone and make objecting to it look petty.

Adrian glanced at the photographer instead of me.

"Camille is family," he said.

The sentence was calm. Final.

A few guests nearby went quiet.

Everyone knew Camille had been Adrian's first love. They had grown up together, dated when they were young, and separated years before our marriage was arranged. The relationship was supposedly over. The closeness had not ended with it.

I looked down at my wedding ring.

Three hours old, and it already felt ridiculous.

"Bella."

Luca's voice came from my right.

Adrian's oldest brother after him had never bothered pretending to approve of the marriage. He stepped closer, his expression hard.

"Don't mistake a ring for trust. A Moretti doesn't become a Valenti because a priest says a few words."

I met his stare. "Then perhaps your brother shouldn't have married one."

His jaw tightened.

"This marriage stopped a war," he said. "That doesn't erase what your family has done."

"And it doesn't erase what yours has done either."

"Enough," Teresa murmured.

The photographer shifted awkwardly behind his camera.

Then Matteo moved.

Unlike Luca, he had never looked at me as if my last name were a loaded weapon. He crossed the space between us and offered me his hand.

"Come on, Bella. You're in the picture."

"Matteo—" Teresa began.

"She's Adrian's wife," he said, still looking at me. "Whatever else is complicated, that part isn't."

He drew me back toward the center, not beside Adrian—Camille still occupied that place—but close enough that I was no longer being displayed like an unwanted guest.

The camera flashed.

Nico leaned down as the photographer reset his lens.

"Wrong brother, sweetheart," he whispered.

I turned so fast I nearly caught his chin with my veil.

His grin was shameless.

"What?"

"Nothing." His eyes flicked toward Adrian, then back to me. "Just saying."

The second flash went off before I could answer.

For the rest of the reception, I smiled until my cheeks hurt.

I danced with people whose names I barely remembered. I accepted congratulations from men who had negotiated the terms of my marriage like a business merger. I let my father, Roberto Moretti, kiss my forehead and tell me I had done the right thing for everyone.

Everyone included my younger brother, Gabriel, whose name had been written into the security agreement. The Valentis would protect him while the ceasefire held. Our family's debts to several dangerous allies would be settled. No one would retaliate for old blood.

Those promises mattered.

I just had not understood that my own dignity was apparently not included in the contract.

By midnight, the guests were gone.

I found Adrian in the library with his tie loosened and a drink in his hand. He looked exactly as he had during the ceremony: controlled, handsome, impossible to read.

I closed the door behind me.

"Was that necessary?"

He did not pretend not to understand. "The photograph?"

"Your ex standing beside you in our wedding portrait."

"Camille isn't my ex in the way you're trying to make it sound. She has been part of this family since childhood."

"You were in love with her."

His gaze hardened slightly. "Years ago."

"And today, on our wedding day, you told an entire room that she was family while your mother moved your wife to the edge of the picture."

He set his glass down.

"This marriage gives you the Valenti name, security, and anything you reasonably need. No one in this house will disrespect you without answering to me. But I am not removing Camille from our lives to make you feel more secure."

I stared at him.

The contradiction was so clean I almost laughed.

"No one will disrespect me," I repeated. "Except when respecting me inconveniences Camille."

"Don't turn this into a competition."

"I didn't. You did, the moment you chose where each of us stood."

He exhaled through his nose, already tired of a marriage that had lasted less than a day.

That was the moment something inside me settled.

I had agreed to a loveless marriage. I had not agreed to live as a substitute for the woman he would have chosen if family politics had not interfered.

I opened the library door.

The housekeeper was crossing the hall.

"Mrs. Ellis? Please have my luggage moved to the east-wing guest suite."

Adrian turned. "Bella."

I kept my eyes on the housekeeper. "Tonight, please."

She hesitated, glanced at Adrian, then nodded. "Of course."

I slept in the guest suite alone.

The next morning, two members of staff carried the first suitcase down the grand staircase. I followed behind them, intending to move the rest of my things before breakfast.

Adrian appeared at the landing.

He took one look at the suitcase and came down three steps at a time. His hand closed over the handle, stopping the staff member in place.

"Leave it."

The man immediately let go.

Adrian looked up at me.

The calm in his face cracked—something I had never seen before.

"You are my wife," he said. "You sleep in my room."

I rested one hand on the banister.

"Why?"

His grip tightened on the suitcase.

"Because that's where my wife belongs."

"Interesting." I descended one step. "Yesterday I didn't belong beside you in a photograph. Today I belong in your bed?"

His eyes flashed.

Neither of us moved.

Behind him, Nico appeared in the hall with a coffee cup in his hand. Matteo stopped near the dining-room doors. Luca stood farther back, watching me like he expected a Moretti trick.

Adrian lowered his voice.

"Move your things back."

I looked at the three brothers behind him, then at the husband who had found his first claim on me only after I created distance.

"No."

It was the first thing I denied him as his wife.

From the way the entire hallway went silent, I knew it would not be the last.
