I only wanted one night. One night to follow my heart. One night to put the life burdens aside. One night to feel like I mattered. One night with the Alpha heir who would never look twice at a low-ranking nobody like me—if he knew who I really was. I gave him a fake name. He gave me a not-looking-promising promise. One night to follow my heart. One night to put the life burdens aside. One night to feel like I mattered.

"Come on, Charlotte! This is your chance to actually have some fun for once." Lexi's eyes sparkled with mischief as she tugged at my arm, pulling me through the dense forest that surrounded the Blood Moon Pack territory. The setting sun cast long shadows between the trees, and my heart hammered against my ribs.

"I don't think this is a good idea," I whispered, glancing nervously over my shoulder. "This celebration is for Alphas and Betas only. If we're caught—"

"We won't get caught," Lexi insisted, her confidence unwavering. "I've been watching the security patterns for weeks. Trust me, they're all too busy preparing for the solstice feast to notice a couple of low-ranking wolves slipping in."

That was easy for her to say. Lexi had always been the daring one, while I preferred to keep my head down and avoid trouble. In a world where your rank determined everything, being a low-ranking wolf meant staying invisible was often the safest choice.

"Besides," she continued, lowering her voice to a conspiratorial whisper, "don't you want to see what they're all like when they think no one's watching? All those powerful Alphas letting loose..." She wiggled her eyebrows suggestively.

I rolled my eyes but couldn't help the small smile that tugged at my lips. It had been months since I'd done anything remotely exciting. Between working extra shifts at the pack's supply store and helping my elderly neighbor with her garden, my life had fallen into a predictable, if boring, routine.

"Fine," I relented. "But if we get caught, I'm blaming you entirely."

Lexi's answering grin was triumphant. "That's my girl! Now come on, we need to change."

She pulled a small bag from behind a tree and handed me a simple but elegant dress in midnight blue. I changed quickly, the soft fabric cool against my skin. Lexi looked stunning in her emerald green dress that complemented her fiery red hair.

"How do I look?" I asked nervously, smoothing down the unfamiliar fabric.

"Like you absolutely belong there," she assured me, adjusting a strand of my brown hair. "Just keep your chin up and act like you own the place. That's what all those high-ranking wolves do anyway."

As dusk settled over the forest, we approached the edge of the celebration grounds. The summer solstice was the biggest event in our pack's calendar, a night when the moon's power was said to be at its peak. For Alphas and Betas, it was a night of celebration, networking, and sometimes, if the rumors were to be believed, finding potential mates.

The candlelit grove ahead of us glowed with warm, inviting light. Soft music drifted through the air, mingling with the sound of laughter and conversation. My wolf, Hope, stirred anxiously within me, sensing my nervousness.

"There's a gap in the security near the eastern border," Lexi whispered. "Follow me and try to look bored, like you're supposed to be here."

I mimicked her confident stride as we slipped past a distracted guard who was too busy flirting with a server to notice us. And just like that, we were in.

The celebration was more magnificent than I could have imagined. Lanterns hung from tree branches, casting a golden glow over everything. Tables laden with food and drink lined one side of the clearing, while a small orchestra played soft music on the other. In the center, couples danced beneath the darkening sky, their movements graceful and synchronized.

"I'll get us some drinks," Lexi said, already moving toward a table with champagne flutes. "Try not to look so overwhelmed."

I nodded, attempting to school my features into an expression of casual indifference. I wandered toward the edge of the dancing area, watching as high-ranking pack members twirled and laughed. They all seemed so confident, so at ease in their own skin. What would that feel like?

Hope whined softly inside me, suddenly alert. I frowned, trying to understand what had caught her attention. A strange sensation prickled along my spine, like electricity in the air before a storm.

I was so distracted by the feeling that I didn't notice the tall figure in front of me until it was too late. I collided with a solid chest, the impact causing the champagne in the man's glass to slosh over the rim and onto his expensive-looking suit.

"I'm so sorry!" I gasped, mortified. "I wasn't looking where—"

The words died in my throat as I looked up into the most intense golden eyes I'd ever seen. They belonged to a man who could only be described as breathtaking. Tall, with broad shoulders and dark hair that fell slightly over his forehead, he radiated power and authority. An Alpha, without a doubt, and not just any Alpha.

I recognized him instantly from pack gatherings where low-ranking wolves like me stood at the back and watched from afar. Drake Kingsley, heir to the Kingsley family—one of the most powerful werewolf lineages in the region.

He was staring at me with an expression of shock, his nostrils flaring slightly as if he was... scenting me? The champagne dripping down his suit seemed forgotten as his eyes locked with mine.

The air between us felt charged, heavy with something I couldn't name. Hope, usually so quiet and submissive, suddenly surged forward within me, a strange yearning emanating from her that I'd never felt before.

"Mate," a deep, rumbling voice growled in my mind—but it wasn't Hope. It was deeper, more powerful, and distinctly male.

Drake's eyes widened further, his pupils dilating until the gold was just a thin ring around black. I could see his chest rising and falling rapidly, matching my own quickened breathing.

"Who are you?" he asked, his voice a low, rich timbre that sent shivers down my spine.

Before I could answer, Hope whimpered inside me, trembling not with fear but with recognition. Something primal and ancient was happening, something beyond my control or understanding.

In that moment, with champagne soaking into his expensive suit and curious glances being thrown our way, I realized I was in far deeper trouble than simply crashing an exclusive party.

The Moon Goddess had a twisted sense of humor, it seemed. Because somehow, impossibly, my wolf was recognizing Drake Kingsley—Alpha heir and completely out of my league—as her mate.

Jagger wasn't a charity case; he was Baron's illegitimate son. The family had been illegally funneling offshore money to fund his elite lifestyle. How could they be so ruthlessly evil, plotting her agonizing death just to legitimize their dirty bloodline and steal her trust fund? But she was no longer the fragile puppet they thought she was. Instead of adopting their bastard son, she slammed down an SEC whistleblower threat, forced a new will, and introduced her own handpicked heir. The war had just begun.
