After My Husband Left Me in the Fire, I Inherited a Billion-Dollar Empire Chapter 1

The smoke came first. Thick and black, rolling across the warehouse ceiling like something alive. I was stacking inventory in Aisle 12 when the alarm screamed. My hands froze on a box of electronics. Around me, voices shouted. Feet pounded concrete.

I turned toward the loading bay. Orange light flickered between the shelves.

"Fire!" someone yelled. "Everyone out!"

I ran. My sneakers slapped the floor. The smoke dropped lower, burning my throat. I couldn't see the exit anymore. Just shapes moving through the haze. I heard Victor Hale, my supervisor, barking orders somewhere ahead. I followed the sound.

Then the world tilted.

A steel beam crashed down from the ceiling. I saw it for half a second before it slammed into my left shoulder and drove me to the ground. The weight crushed me flat. My chest hit concrete. Air punched out of my lungs.

Pain exploded through my arm. White-hot. Blinding.

I screamed.

"Jonah!" My voice cracked. "Jonah, help!"

Smoke poured over me. I couldn't move. The beam pinned my left arm at an angle that made my vision blur. I twisted my head, searching through the smoke. My right hand clawed at the concrete. My wedding ring scraped the floor.

"Jonah!" I screamed again. Louder. Desperate.

Then I saw him.

He came running through the smoke, his shirt pulled over his mouth. Relief flooded my chest so hard it hurt. He was coming. He heard me. He was going to get me out.

"Here!" I choked out. "I'm here!"

He looked right at me. Our eyes met.

Then he veered left.

He ran past me. Twenty feet beyond where I lay trapped, he grabbed a metal lockbox from a storage shelf. Paulina's lockbox. The one she kept her "important documents" in. The one she made a big deal about every time she came to the warehouse, touching Jonah's arm and asking him to keep it somewhere safe.

He clutched it to his chest and ran for the exit.

I stared at the space where he'd been. My mouth opened. No sound came out.

The heat grew. The smoke thickened. I pressed my face to the concrete and closed my eyes.

I don't know how long I lay there. Time stretched. The pain in my arm became everything. I heard voices far away. Boots. Radios crackling.

Hands grabbed me. Firefighters. They shouted to each other. Metal saws screamed. The beam lifted. Someone pulled me up. I couldn't feel my left arm anymore. Just a distant, throbbing wrongness.

They carried me outside.

The night air hit my face. Cold and sharp. I sucked it in. My lungs burned. Someone laid me on a stretcher. Paramedics moved around me, fast and efficient. One of them cut my sleeve open. I turned my head away. I didn't want to see.

Across the parking lot, I spotted Jonah.

He stood beside an ambulance. His arm was around Paulina's shoulders. She wasn't burned. She wasn't coughing. Her makeup was smudged, but her clothes were clean. She'd never been inside the warehouse.

She pressed her face into his collar and cried. He rubbed her back in slow circles. His mouth moved. Soothing words I couldn't hear.

He didn't look at the stretchers. He didn't ask which ambulance I was in.

I closed my eyes.

The ER smelled like disinfectant and burnt coffee. A doctor with gray hair and tired eyes sat on a stool beside my bed. She held a tablet and spoke in a calm, practiced voice.

"The nerve damage is extensive," she said. "We've done what we can, but the delay in treatment means we're looking at permanent mobility loss in your left arm."

I stared at the ceiling tiles. White squares with small holes. I counted them.

"You'll need physical therapy," she continued. "But I want you to understand that this is irreversible. You'll adapt, but the function won't return."

I nodded. My throat was too dry to speak.

She squeezed my good hand and left.

Jonah arrived forty minutes later. His shirt still smelled like smoke. And something else. Perfume. Sweet and floral. Paulina's perfume.

He sat in the chair beside the bed and pulled out his phone.

"How are you feeling?" he asked. His eyes stayed on the screen.

"They said it's permanent," I whispered.

He nodded. "Yeah. I heard." He typed something. His thumb moved fast. "It was just an accident, Hope. Don't make it into a bigger deal than it is."

I turned my head toward him. "You ran past me."

He looked up. His face was blank. "What?"

"In the fire. I was trapped. You ran past me."

He frowned. "I didn't see you. The smoke was everywhere."

"You looked right at me."

His jaw tightened. "I didn't see you, Hope." His phone buzzed. He glanced down. His expression softened. He stood. "I should go. You need rest."

He left before the night nurse came back.

I lay in the dark hospital room and stared at the ceiling. My left arm throbbed. But inside my chest, something else happened.

The last ember went out.

I didn't cry. I didn't shake. I just felt cold. Clear. Empty.

The woman who loved Jonah Wright died in that fire.

I was someone else now.
